Because the State Fair of Texas epitomizes all things Texas. This is a 2026 review of the path I walk each year. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Plan your visit by buying a season pass and tickets. Choose a weekday (take the kids out of school if you have to), so you can enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the fair. You'll find carnies egging you to play games on the midway, plenty of sun (and heat), and of course Big Tex's booming voice as he towers over you. 1 Star. Service - Every single person that works (or volunteers) at the fair has one thing in common: they're happy that you're there. Really. It's like southern hospitality. Everyone knows the State Fair is probably one place that many out of towners will visit, so they make sure everyone will have a great time. 1 Star. Food - Arrive at 10 AM, head to Big Tex, visit Fletchers and grab a regular Corny Dog (mustard only) and a Chocolate Corny Dog (yes, it's delicious). Then head into the Texas Food Court, find a table, and grab a Frito Pie from Texas Chili Parlor, Cha-Cha Chata from Ranchero Deep Fried Love, and the Flamin' Crunch Pizza from Tom Grace concession. Head out the south exit towards the Cotton Bowl Plaza. Grab a Smoked Turkey Leg from Deckle's. Then head into the Midway where you'll find Darn Good Corn and Stiffler's Mom's Cookies. Time to walk off what you ate, so exit the Midway and walk around the Cotton Bowl counterclockwise. You'll find Tornado Taters along this path. By now you should be tired, it should be around 4 PM, and it's time to go home. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. I've walked this path for over a decade. The Texas Food Court can get crowded, but a lot of vendors can be found here. I try to avoid weekends, always make a plan, and eat way too much. You better believe I will be back. 1 Star.

I will go out on a limb here, I don't believe you will find a better Bluegrass festival anywhere in the country. 'But this Texas, there ain't any Bluegrass here'-you might say. Well you would be wrong. It's alive and very well right here in Framers Branch. Every act could be or has been or will be a headliner at any other festival that usually might have only one 'big name'. I have managed in two events to see everyone of my favorites. If you love great musicianship and acoustic music this is a can't miss show. I am anxious to see who will come next year. All of them have a common theme, raise money for the Greek Orthodox Church by selling Mediterranean food as well as arts, crafts, and books while educating the public about the church and the Greek culture. This festival stood out because the volunteers focused on every last detail. Usually you have to stand in one line after another to get anything, but that wasn't the case here. There were so many options for buying tickets and so many volunteers working every station, that we easily spent more time enjoying ourselves than we did standing around in queues That wasn't the case in Honolulu, Hawaii. Trashcans were everywhere and refuse was regularly collected. There is nothing more unappealing than an overflowing trashcan with flies and bees buzzing around the leftovers and then visiting your drink can and the bite you are about to take. Thankfully this festival had a dedicated crew regularly pulling out the trash bags, and carting them away. The place stayed meticulously clean and bug free which is more than I can say for the small one I attended in Bellingham, Washington. Food choices were plentiful and it was served hot and fresh. The standards were on the menu such as gyros, dolomades, and baklava, but you could also get Greek lasagna, lamb chops and Greek sausage. Signs clearly indicated the ingredients of each dish and the number of coupons to purchase them. These were also listed in the lovely program guide. The event took place regardless of rain or shine. Thankfully plentiful seating was available in the shade of a tent as well as en plein air. Entertainment could be heard throughout the venue with loudspeakers positioned everywhere. The stage was a raised platform so that you could see the dancers and musicians perform. The band on Sunday midday was quite good. The male singer had an amazing voice. The children's area was secure and provided an array of activities for the kiddos. They could run around and play without bumping into the public. Lots of kids had face painting done. Parking was nearby and free. I read that you could also pay for valet or take a shuttle bus. We managed to find a free place across the street. I bought tickets online through Eventbrite. General admission was $7 and food coupons were sold in packs of 20 coupons for $20 plus tax. This made it easy to bypass the the lines at will call or the lines for those needing to purchase their tickets and coupons with cash or credit card in person. I loved the wide variety of items in the Agora (marketplace). They sold baby olive trees! There was soap, incense, potpourri, gold and silver jewelry with gemstones, light cotton clothing, intricately carved wooden boxes, beautifully painted nesting dolls and wooden eggs, oil paintings, lamps, etc. We had fun weaving our way through the souk. The aisles were narrow and the tables were packed with unique finds. The history room had maps, art and some explanations of Ancient Greek. There was also a tour of the church were you could learn about some of the iconography, alter setup, clergy vestments, and Greek Orthodox practice. The attention to the details was evident by this amazing group of church volunteers. They demonstrated their passion and friendliness from the moment you walked in the door to the final exit. We were able to find someone to answer our questions every step of the way with the handy guide book, and information desks setup throughout. A woman in a wheelchair even thanked everyone for coming as they left the venue. What an absolutely pleasurable experience.

We tried the gyro, no flavor, mediocre at best, so expensive , $12 for just the pita and the meat. No side, and they all wrapped up on trays, God knows how long they stay there. Lamb sliders and fries was our next choice, nothing special there either. Again, store bought slider buns and not enough meat, not tasty, fries also stay under a heat lamp, the frozen type of course. Like can you guys make some effort at least??? Fast paced, long lines, order, pay, GET OUT!!! We were not impressed at all. Best thing was the baklava sundae for sure. So... bye bye OPA! The haunted house was a pass...besides I personally felt like it was more geared toward smaller kids. Now, I will say the trails gave me a little exercise, which I clearly needed. There's plenty of walking, lights, pumpkins, themed areas, and LOTS of photo opportunities. And honestly, that is really what Pumpkin Nights was for me pumpkin photo opps, lights, and whatever fun you decide to make out of the experience. If you go with the right people, take cute pictures, enjoy the scenery, and just lean into it, you can have a good time. Overall, I'm glad I experienced it, but this would probably be a one-and-done for me. Pumpkin Nights: cute, festive, very photo-friendly... and definitely what you make of it.

I am thankful there was a good mixture or "festival food" (like those tornado taters or elephant ears, the food you might like but later haunts you) and the actual Irish and European foods. I was especially happy to see food vendor (right outside automobile building) called Oz Highland Farms. It is strategically placed here because that end of the automobile building is where the Scottish Village is. Oh yes, potential festival go-Er, the vendor has Haggis. They have haggis pups (like haggis bites I guess), and they have Haggis and Mash. I got this and it was a bowl of mashed potatoes with a slice of what can only be described as Haggis Loaf. This was a smart way to do it since it is a fair and it was pretty close to what I remember Haggis tasting like in Scotland. Plenty of exhibitors and food vendors and the music was perfect. Bagpipes playing when you get out of the parking lot (stage is right there). Please note: Go to the NTIF website (https://www.ntif.org) and read the information about parking. Very important to follow those instructions no matter how you have gone to the fairgrounds in the past.

The food average around $5, but the portions are small. This is a free, one day event. It is open to the public. Tickets are required for food. Same location each year at some random parking lot on Midway, between 635 and Alpha. Plenty of parking spots. It's so hot every year and this is an outside event. I suggest having this event in the beginning of Oct. for better weather.

A glutton, like me, can expect to spend 15 tickets, alone - to get that warm, comfortable feeling. The atmosphere is happy and vibrant. There is also a stage, with constant music and entertainment. While it always seems like a good idea to be in the front, I would recommend to claim a spot towards the middle or back of the lawn. At around 9ish it will be packed, the sun goes down and the crowd starts dancing. At this time people at the front will kinda get pushed out of the way. Plus, the music can get a little loud. You'll be a lot more comfortable and have a view a little further back anyways. I hope they can continue to have this event, it's pretty sweet!
