I wanted to see a live cricket game while visiting Australia and the opportunity finally came up on…read moremy last night in Sydney. Looking at different options to get to the stadium, I used the public transport from outside my hotel in Circilar Quay to Moore Park right next to the stadium. Very easy to navigate and so many guides on the platforms willing to help. Each trip was $4.60. Game was at 7:10 but I arrived early to have drinks and dinner at a local bar. I got to the stadium about an hour before the game, lot's of activities going on outside the gates. From games for kids, face painting, sitting on Santa's lap and KFC buckets to wear on your head. Apparently this is something fans do here, had to try it. I purchased a ticket on site, told them my first game wanted a seat close enough to see the action... for $20 i had a great seat in the upper bill o'reilly section. I sat with complete strangers but in no time we were all talking and cheering on the local team- the Sydney Sixers. Still learning the rules of the game but it was still a lot of fun. I had some beers during the game, loved that right behind us was a concession stand. A few drink and food options but glad I ate before the game. The sixers ended up losing to the Brisbane Heat by 48 runs.

One of the best sporting venues in the world. Iconic. History…read more A few tips: - Catch Public Transport - Arrive early enough to be in line for security if you want to be there for the beginning - If you drive park away from the parking area. Its terrible when the event is over and can take more than an hour to leave the car park. - Keep your drink holder. They charge for them! - Grab a few drinks before you show up. The drinks are expensive and most areas only sell mid strength beer. - Grab a feed before you show up, food can be expensive or depending on the event, bring your own.

Aussie Music Festival! This was such an amazing time! Heaps…read moreof fun! The Newtown area took over one of their local parks, set up music stages and food trucks and rocked out! I absolutely had a great time! For a mere 5 bucks, you get a full day of entertainment and fun in the sun! There were a huge sampling of food trucks, beer booths, and beverage carts. They sold stuff that was much fancier than the regular fair fare. There were merchant booths selling everything from raunchy patches to Nepalese jewelry to boomerangs. They had lots of political activist groups educating the public on the dangers of fracking, the police, groups advocating for looser pub laws, and field hockey! You can even take classes on mulching and recycling! Restrooms were plentiful and clean. Drinking water was supplied for free as well. There was plenty of security and things felt safe. They sold plenty of beer- all locally made in the 'hood! There was a bag check at the gates, but they hardly did a good job of checking. After the festival was over, the party spills out on to the streets where the fun continues! If you're around for this festival, I highly recommend it.

Newtown Festival always seems to fall on the most humid day of November, year after year. Thus, a…read moreday at the festival involves a tonne of cold drinks, plenty of sunscreen (thankfully available from one stall every 50 metres), plenty of sunburn (no matter how you've tried to combat it) and oftena mild case of sunstroke. Plus, you may end up getting rained on at some point. But more often than not, it's worth it. Basically, Newtown festival is a giant market that takes up Newtown's iconic Camperdown Memorial Rest Park. At least 280 stalls stand shoulder to shoulder, selling and promoting everything from food and drinks (both alcoholic and non - I advise sticking to the non alcoholic early in the day to avoid the evil repercussions of the alcohol-heat combo) to skin cancer awareness stands (apt), hula hoop workshops, political activists, face painting, hula hooping, musical instruments, henna tattoos and plumbing services, as well as martial arts demonstrations, live theatre and street art, a writers' area and a huge kids contingent. Weaving your way through all these stalls will take hours - it's a slow and concerted effort making your way down the rows of stalls, each foot being placed carefully so as to not tread on someone elses as the entire population of the markets move as one like a slow motion school of fish. But once you've made your way to the end, you're rewarded with an open green in which to sit and listen to the line-up of local live bands on one of three stages and from experience, these bands are usually pretty good. The festival is free and it's a great way to sample what Newtown stands for whilst supporting the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. Sunday 13th November 9:30am - 5:30pm

Leichhardt Oval. The home of the Tigers. The 8th wonder of the world. Whatever you want to call it,…read moreit's one of the last suburban sports grounds in Sydney to retain its historic charm. It's a step back in time to when sports grounds were simple, not soulless concrete corporate behemoths. A great place to watch any code of football, I have returned to watch my beloved Sydney FC the on APIA Leichhardt in the Australia Cup (Australia's version of the English FA Cup). Normally I'd sit on the hill, but the rain has forced me into the grandstand. Food options aren't spectacular, but you're not expecting a la carte. This is meat pie, hot dog and cold beer out of a tin territory. And that does me just fine. It's picturesque, your close to the action. Long live Leichhardt Oval.

There really is nothing quite like a Wests Tigers home game when it's being played at Leichhardt…read moreOval. The atmosphere in that old, local ground is unparalleled and that's not just me as a Tigers supporter. I've been to home games of other teams I support, I've been to home games for the Tigers at other venues, but nothing beats Leichhardt! It's electric, the 20,000 seater/stander is always full when the game kicks off, the beers are expensive as is the food, but that's about the only draw back, you can time your runs to the bathroom and avoid a rush, and exiting the ground takes a while as you could probably imagine, a mass exodus of twenty thousand people. But not even that slow moving, pressed up against a stranger walk could ruin the excitement and energy of the match in question. There is one major grandstand where the members sit and then two sides are grassy hills, and the entrance is made up of smaller stands and a grassy flat area. The Oval is located close to Norton Street and all it's bars and restaurants as well as a brisk walk in the other direction to Rozelle's pubs and a slightly longer walk to Balmain. Leichhardt oval holds this reputation throughout the whole code as one of the last remaining local home grounds as all the teams, including two thirds of the Tigers games are moving to larger capacity stadiums such as Telstra Stadium and the SFS. Grounds with less atmosphere, less history and less character. And I do believe the reputation extends beyond the code as I recall early last year being at a game when Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles walked through the crowd soaking up an Australian experience in what must have been a Supernatural publicity tour, that is a tour for Supernatural, not a tour of supernatural publicity.
