Part of this gallery's charm is its location, it's about a 5 minute walk from Parramatta road but is a million miles from the grungyness of that district. Instead, it stands proudly on a leafy suburban road, almost blending in with the quaint neighbouring houses but not quite...
It's an old Masonic hall and so is big and beautiful. The gallery is split into two levels, the upper floor is used for modern European art and the ground floor is dedicated to Aboriginal art. All the pieces, which range from painting to sculpture, are spaciously exhibited on the fresh white walls and with very few visitors to the gallery, you really have an opportunity to examine them properly.
The gallery is owned by an American couple who are always nearby to talk you through the pieces, though they are often tied up showing round some smart patrons who are looking to buy. There is a great deal of information available on the pieces, especially the Aboriginal art as the gallery owners have a lot of contact with the artists.
I really enjoyed having a stroll around here, its a very personable gallery. read more
