ATA Martial Arts - Chesterfield - Training mat during black belt testing

First let me say that my boys have been students here for many years. One longer than the other…read more Depending on how young your kid starts, they could end up in the Tigers class for younger students. This is where my oldest started. That program teaches them the foundation at a young age. Then each testing cycle, they get a new color belt until they graduate from the Tigers class. Next is the Beginners class. This is where she appropriate kids or adults start. You train and practice until you get your next color belts to move to the Advanced class. Then so on until you get too the Black Belt class where you train to become a Black Belt. Each class can become harder so you'll have to train hard to get your next color belt. They have classes Monday - Thursday and Saturday. You can pick any time you wish to train as long as you are consistent with the amount if days you train per week (at least 2-3, not including practice at home). They have a receptionist that is very pleasant and informative. They have so been nice but currently Mrs. Ring is the best yet! She helps get your registered, fitting for uniforms, gear and anything you need assistance with off the mat. The instructors are pretty awesome too. The reason why I moved my youngest from MMA to taekwondo was because of the structure. I feel they hold a tight ship here and set expectations for their students. They will teach you and guide you especially if they see you need assistance but you can also ask the instructor or assistant trainers for guidance as well. They offer 1x1 training for a fee outside of class training as well. Now the price.... I think just like any sport, its expensive. You need a uniform and as their rank goes up, those uniforms are costly, lol. They will offer discounts during certain times of the year but it's still expensive. They have to get the right weapons ATA approved (meaning ATA weapons) which they use different one each cycle. The good thing is they rotate so once you have all weapons ( I think only 4 are used in the classes before Black Belt), you'll be fine for a while. You also have to pay once you advance for each color belt. So yes, it can be expensive. However, as I see my kids randomly doing jump spin and sidekicks around the house, I know this embedded in their lifestyle. ATA Chesterfield has a FB group for you to stay up to date and they'll send you text reminders and emails too. Definitely worth having your kids try it out. If you do, they usually have a trial offer for new students. Huge kudos to instructors Mr. David, Mrs. Bhavikatti and Master Shank!! Oh, the parking can be tricky. While it's a huge parking lot, it is shared with a dance studio, a performance athletic building, Bounce U and Goodwill. So it can get crowded at times.

We now have 4 family members actively participating, kids and adults. We have had multiple friends join or even switch to this specific location because how well it is managed. The climate emphasizes encouragement which forms great friendship bonds with both children and adults. My kids can't wait for class to see their ATA friends. My wife became friends with other adults and has provided transport for their kids when needed. The classes are large here but the location is huge. They are therefore able to have classes with more similar ability students together unlike other small studios that everybody is lumped together. They also have up to 4 additional instructors per class constantly assisting students as opposed to just one teacher. Friends of ours that belonged to a different karate studio with just one teacher per class complained that their 10 year old child who was more experienced had to constantly help instruct the brand new students next to him during class and was no longer enjoying himself. They joined ATA and are actually having fun We obviously feel strongly that this endeavor is money well spent and will continue this along with other kids activities.
