A very mom and pop feeling toy store. We went inside first to take a look around and my daughter really wanted a pusheen stuffed animal. It is apparently some popular cat? Lol. I ended up letting her buy it and the lady working there was so friendly and even offered to wrap it up for us but I declined as I know my daughter wanted to hold it right away. I always come here when in mystic but today I was looking for jellycats and found them! They have a great selection and the very helpful associate said she would be getting more in soon! They have a large selection of other stuffed animals, collectibles, games, puzzles and much more. Definitely worth stopping in! read more

I walked in and it's a pretty large store, however it doesn't seem to have a lot of stuff. The prices are pretty high but I know you're paying for where you're at. Most of the things were things you could find at big name brands. However it was just nice to see the things that they did have. I wish the selection was a little bit better and the service was good. read more

There were some items I may have been interested in, however I thought since there were a lot of nostalgic items and book, they might have golden books. Visit Date: July 5, 2019 & July 7, 2019 We stopped in this shop twice when we spend the weekend in CT. The first time we let my son play and look around and eventually I got him out of the store after buying him a set of magnet toys which he seems to really love. He loved playing with the train table they had because he's big on trains and sadly we don't have room for a train table. We stopped back before grabbing the ferry home because we were going to a birthday party when we got home and needed to get a gift for the party recipient. We let our son pick the toy and I found a cute count sesame street mini stuffed animal to add to it. They were helpful with packaging the gift nicely as well. At first I thought the owner of the store was a little mean because my son was rolling the toy cars around and I got the gist that he didn't want him to do that but he seemed to soften up after we spent some time in the store and on our second visit, he was a lot more friendly. So I give this store 5 stars and say if you are visiting Mystic you should stop here. read more

We've lived in the area for a few years but just stumbled on this cute toy shop today. The owner was very helpful and assisted us in finding a super fun and tactile book for our six month old baby. I also appreciated that the store still has a masks required policy. Until kids are all able to get the vaccine, it's a smart decision and made us feel safe to browse and shop! read more

The Toy Soldier looks kinda small on the outside but it's neatly organized with a great selection of toys for young & old. It's located in the Olde Mystic Village along with a collection of other shops so you might not know it's there unless you are familiar with the area or are a tourist. I've been in there many times with my 3 year old & the staff have always been helpful & polite. My son loves their car collection & the $700 Thomas the Train set. He has his own train set at home that wasn't $700 but he likes to play with theirs every time we visit. They seem to have everything imaginable that a child might want. There's a small room dedicated to stuffed animals of all price ranges. Another area is exclusively for little girls. I'm really impressed by the layout of the store being the size it is. The only real drawback is the prices being a bit high. However they do seem to have a higher quality selection than your local Wal-Mart. read more

Yikes! My children were in their stroller with a lollipop and as soon as we walked In the worker (maybe owner) attacked us with paper towels telling us to wipe them down (they weren't messy and a paper towel doesn't wipe up sticky lollipop if they were) and told us to be careful... as if it was a high end Designer clothing store. It was a bit much for a little toy store with just average toys. We were going back in to buy them something but we turned around and left. read more

I don't know how these guys are still in business. They frantically yelled at me and my baby-a literal baby- to wear a mask a couple weeks ago a few minutes after we walked in. I just turned around and left. No other store in the village did that to us. If you're scared, just get vaccinated. Or close your business. Otherwise, get over it. Wow! ..the reviews on here. The truth about this toy store is on point! UNFRIENDLY and obnoxious. It's to think toys = happy and friendly and welcoming. Nope, not at this location. First thing I saw walking in the door was an unhappy employee/worker. And it was just one person working at the time. She definitely did not have a happy face or even a soft smile. As she approaches me then asked if she could help me find anything, with her vibe and tone I knew instantly she doesn't want you to be in the store if you don't intend to buy anything. Not to mention everything is $$$ expensive.. things you can find at target or somewhere else for less. I DO NOT RECOMMEND as a tourist myself, to visit this store if you're researching for places to visit. It will ruin your happy go mood. Thanks for reading.. have a nice visit in Mystic! read more

Oddly enough I was in desperate need of a stuffed animal for my Mom, who is suffering from dementia. I spoke to someone on the phone and talked about my quest. My Mom had been to Antarctica 4 times and just adores penguins, so that was my original quest. The staff member offered to hold the only penguin they had until I got there to check it out but also said that she had a polar bear and an arctic seal available....She accommodated my timing (I was driving from 2 hours away) and I was very happy with the seal...it is perfect for what was needed (soft, cuddly and yet not juvenile). It has already eased mom's restlessness and was a great purchase, made possible by a caring, and responsive staff member. It could not have been a better experience. read more

A little note before you read- Almost every decent review is at least 3 plus years old. We visit the Mystic area in particular the aquarium at least 2x per year. With two little ones, this is shop is one we've visited often. The employees, I assume the owners, are particularly rude, if your not in and out making a quick purchase. For example, my wife was browsing the books with my youngest. The owner walks up toward them, behind them and makes a noise of dissatisfaction..... as in you're reading this book, without just buying it. Even if I was going to make the purchase for the book, after that, no thanks. Also, the markups on the toys and items are too much to stomach. For example the Calico Critters that are on display are so close to double what you could pay elsewhere. Now I get supporting local, and they aren't buying in mass bulk so their costs are higher. However, that kind of markup is insane. Fine place to browse, maybe get ideas. Cheaper and or better stuff than the aquarium store for sure. Owners also won't say goodbye when you leave if you don't make a purchase as well. Not sure what your paying for there, it's certainly not the friendly service. read more

Fun place! My son had a good time looking through their wares, and they were very friendly and tolerant about the grabby ways of a toddler. Seems like they have quite a variety here. Hard not to find something appeasing for the little ones. It was odd, however, to see a room of to-scale model war figurines, complete with a Nazi Germany rally setting! Just about every wartime era was represented, and it seemed to be the only adult-themed place in the store... weird. OK, OK: Good stop for the kids, or for some good ideas if they're waiting at home. We found this wonderful shop in Olde Mistick Village. The owner Barbara was so very helpful as she guided us to just the right gifts for a 1 year old and 8 year old. I was amazed at the selection of learning toys/books. The Usborne book are so unique. A hidden gem! read more

I shopped at this store yesterday in Old Mystic Village and could not have had a better experience. This toy shop is quintessential toy shopping perfection (and the owner who happened to be working the front during my visit was so incredibly kind and helpful). I know what a hard time this is for everyone during this pandemic and the Toy Soldier is doing an amazing job at continuing to provide this charming store for kids (and kids at heart ;) such as myself) while doing their due diligence keeping the customers and employees safe following recommended masking and distancing guidelines. It gave me such peace of mind shopping there knowing they are taking every precaution available to assure my visit is a safe one (I am a RN (that works part time caring for very sick and compromised children on respiratory ventilators) as well as a homeschooling mother to two little boys (one with a rare autoimmune disorder) so I take this business' care very personally and am filled with gratitude. We are also a military family 9 months into my husband's 1 year over seas deployment so to say that my Christmas shopping time this season is small and valuable would be a huge understatement... my trip to the Toy Soldier could not have been more lovely and my time and money well spent. I will forever be a supporting customer of this great establishment. Thank you for all that you do for our community and keeping the magic of the toy soldier alive and a safe place to shop during this pandemic. My 2 year old was so excited to see the big teddy bear on the porch entrance & hugged the bear on the porch. When my family entered the store a older man who was a employee rolled his eyes at us. We immediately left the store feeling not welcomed. It's a shame because we were looking forward to purchasing puzzles/ toys for our child at this store on our vacation. So sad that this is a toy store where kids are clearly not welcome! read more

Nice selection of toys, but very much overpriced. (A wooden Thomas the Train set was on sale for $700!!!) They had a lot of very nice dolls and Wizard of Oz themed items. Most of these things are more for collectors than for children. It was an enjoyable experience though, just looking around. read more

What a fabulous toy store!!! It brings back the days of old when the people there would actually help you find the perfect thing!! I needed a gift for a birthday party and had no idea what to look for. A very sweet woman asked if I was finding everything alright. She not only found the cutest stuffed animal, but also a book to go with it. Not too expensive since I told her my price range was under $30. My niece loved the gift!!! My sister says she sleeps with her new stuffy every night and they have read the book 20 times already. I am going back every time I need something for a child. Oh, and they have beautiful puzzles too! I picked one up for me :) read more

I've been shopping here since my 10 year old daughter was a baby, the staff and owner are always exceptionally friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. They are always nice and never have an attitude. It is a VERY child friendly shop. They have a fantastic selection of special toys, not your typical commercial stuff. They even have collectible toys like Steiff animals, Madame Alexander dolls, and yes, toy soldiers. They have wonderful, quality, hard to find, fun toys. Excellent. read more

This toy store is one that is not friendly to children. We have gone twice and both times employees watched our toddler closely, asking if were purchasing toys that he touched. We have never encountered such behavior- not even in book stores, Yale library, or department stores. Unfortunate since their selection is fairly good. read more

This is a toy store that is ironically not fond of children. The owner kisses up to parents bringing examples of high priced things they may like while semi sneering at kids. They don't gift wrap in fact make you pay for generic paper bags instead. High prices, sales on only the oldest broken floor models. Toy Soldier is a very special place. I love the educational and creative toys for my grandkids, and their toy soldier collection is amazing. They also have a great selection of die cast cars. Unlike other chain stores, the people who work here seem to really care about quality toys, encouraging imagination, and they know their product, suggesting the best toys for whatever age you're looking for. You get individual attention, and I always leave with a good feeling. I visited this store right before Christmas in hopes to find a toy for my infant son (who I had brought with me) that a friend of mine had mentioned that she got for her granddaughter there. I thought the toy would be a fun one for my son. I walked all around the store looking for the toy but did not see it. I waited to ask the cashier behind the counter if they had the toy and when it was my turn, I asked her if they had the toy and she said that she thought they were all out but that she would check for me in a second. Well............she continued waiting on folks by checking them out and then helped another customer with finding something and walked right by where I was standing and was a few steps by me helping the other customer. I thought.........oh good........she is going to help me next. Nope........she ignored me.......standing there with my big stoller with my 4 1/2 month son and went back to behind the counter. I waited for another few minutes thinking she would come help me next, but nope..........nada! I ended up walking out of the store. Bad move on this person's part. I would have frequented this store in many years to come and bought my son a number of toys/etc. from this place. Now, because I was essentially ignored, I will not walk a foot in the store again! read more
