This was a highly unusual and surprisingly pleasant event. I came into the Wassaic train station on Friday night at 6:15 pm, in pouring rain -- I had missed an earlier train. My friend with whom I had arranged a pickup was unable to change his schedule. I could not find anyone else I knew who could get me. I was headed to my elderly father's house in Pittsfield, MA, a drive of over one hour -- I did not want my dad driving down to get me at night. Ok, I thought, other options? There were cabs lned up outside the train platform. I quickly explained my situation to a Town Taxi driver, whose name I never got. He told me to wait in the cab out of the rain while he called his dispatcher. Ultimately he said that someone could takemeto Great Barrington, closer to 45 minutes away, for $75. I though this was kind of pricey, so I dod not eve ask how much to Pittsfield, another 20 mins, but at least would get me to a decent-sized town in Berkshire County, MA, from where I expected to be able to get myself a taxi to my destination at a somewhat reasonable price. The driver was kind enough to take me to a nearby restaurant to get out of the rain and have a coffee and slice of pizza while waiting. The dispatcher got in touch with me shortly and said a driver would be there in 30 - 45 minutes. It was slightly more than 30. She was extremely courteous, helping me in and out of the car, as I am disabled and have trouble wih that.
She was a good driver, knew where she was going without having the annoying GPS on, and we had a very nice conversation throughout. Her name was Lisa and had just moved there from Long Island where she was a construction heavy equipment operator.
A pleasureto ride with. when we reached Great Barrington, she argreeably followed my directions to a restaurant I knew, and made certain I got in safely.
I wish all my cab / car service experiences were so pleasant. read more
