The Town of Wilson, Kansas is famous for its collection of Czeck eggs, one of which qualifies as…read morethe "World's Largest Czeck Egg". The egg is LARGE and it's beautiful (see pictures). We took the time to drive around Wilson - looking for the other Czeck eggs and we found a lot of time. Worth the detour to see this 20' tall decorated Czeck egg.

Fun little town with lots of hidden eggs…read more Fun facts: Nestled in the Heartlands of Kansas is a small Czech community know as Wilson, which happens to be home to the world's largest Czech egg. Towering 20 feet into the air, the egg is painted in the fashion of Central-Eastern Europe's famous eggs. The pattern on this egg is a traditional Czech design. The project was commissioned by the City of Wilson to commemorate the area's strong heritage. Local artist Christine Slechta, who is a talented Kraslice (what the Czechs and Slovaks call these delicate works of art) creator, chose the design and painted it along with help from the community. Every part of the egg and surrounding gazebo is Kansas made. This is a labor of love from the Kansas Czechs to the world. Anyone traveling by Wilson on I-70 is encouraged to come stretch your legs in the shade of the egg. Wilson is also only a few short miles from Wilson Lake; which has the clearest waters in Kansas, as well as some of the most beautiful scenes. The community of Wilson also hosts an annual celebration of Czech Heritage the last weekend of July every year.

This drive may have more charms during the magic hours of the day. I was on the road from Tulsa to Dodge City, and I decided to break up the 5 hour drive with...about an extra hour driving the "Scenic Drive" off of 160. As I started along the road, I saw the mesas off in the distance - the first time I had encountered them on this trip into New Mexico, a true sign I was now in The West - and was looking forward to better views as I got further along on the drive. What I didn't know was that those introductory views were about as good as I was going to get. I actually ended up taking no vista views, and that's in 2022 when I seemingly take photos of everything. (I did get out of the car to take a couple of sunflower photos, though not nothing I couldn't have found on another roadside stop.) It's a dirt road and open range at times, but the dirt road was pretty easy to drive and the wildlife was nowhere to be found save for a lone roadrunner - and on a blazing hot afternoon, I wouldn't want to be out and about in this exposed landscape either, so I don't blame them. As such, it felt a bit like a drive out on farmlands, nothing I'm going to complain about, but especially as this wasn't my first exposure to red rocks in my life (and there's really not a lot of views of it in the first place) I would've preferred to just stick to 160 and save myself a good half-hour or so. At least at this time of day.
