Looking for a bit of adventure? How about a day trip to Drumheller? We thought it was a great idea, and it turned out better than I could have ever expected. At 8:30am we left Edmonton, and with a few stops along the way (Timmies), we arrived in Drumheller by about 12:30pm. The weather was amazingly hot so our first stop was the Royal Tyrrell museum for a few fun filled hours of educational entertainment.
After the museum we stopped at the World's Largest Dinosaur/tourist information center to find some information on where to go and what to see. With our tummies grumbling, we noticed a recommendation in one of the pamphlets for Bernie and the Boys' Bistro. A couple of (HUGE) burgers, some fries, and a cookie dough milkshake later, we were more than ready to continue with our adventure.
Next, a trip across the suspension bridge proved that I am not as fearless as I remember being in my younger days. A great experience with beautiful sights; definitely worth the visit (just remember - 20 people MAX on the bridge at once and NO SWINGING...EEEK).
A calm evening stroll through the Hoodoos was next on the agendas - HA, calm? I think not!! Once again I find that I am not as spry and fearless as I once was; also lacking a bit of the stamina I believe I once had. After about an hour of climbing and jumping around like a mountain goat, it was time for a break. A nice (air conditioned) 10 minute drive to the Atlas Coal Mine would do the trick.
Took a really neat guided tour up through the conveyer belt and into the old, closed down coal mine entrance. Since the prices were a bit more steep here ($15/person) I think it would be a few years before I did the same tour again, but there were a variety of tour options that I would certainly go back for. A truly interesting experience.
To top off the evening, a scenic drive through 11 single lane bridges, to the small hamlet of Wayne. A perfect wind down to the perfect day trip. At 7:30 pm we call it a day and make our way back to Edmonton where we are quickly off to bed after such an exciting day.
Since there was so much to do (and since we ran out of time to see the reptile museum), just not enough time to get it all done, we were already planning our next trip before we even left - maybe with a tent in tow so we can spend so extra time exploring this incredible place - the Alberta badlands. read more
