We always visit PALS for the summer season and stock up on all the best deals, it is usally a whole experience going down there together, comparing products, prices and filling our trollies. I would definitely recommend PALS to anyone up North, and steer clear of the chains like Liquorland and Woolworths liquor, those places don't need anymore of my money.

Although my best mate is Dan (Dan Murphy's Marden store), I occasionally cheat on my bro-mance with him and head to PALS for my intoxicating sustinance. The selection isn't quite as big, but the prices are very similar, so never really lose out. The spirit selection is impressive but imported beer varieties do fall a little short. Still very good in comparison to all other bottle-o's though. I ended up doing my x-mas grog shopping there this year and was in and out in about 10 minutes spending less than a minute at the check out. I reckon that I could have been waiting in line for over 10 minutes at some other places, so definately another box ticked in my opinion!

We…read morenearly didn't go in because the sign on their door said they're only open Wednesday to Saturday. As we started walking away, a young woman came running after us to say they're open everyday over the period of Christmas. (Maybe they should put that on their door..) The cellar door stocks a nice selection of reds, whites and sparklings. At the moment they have a pretty good offer on for their Moscato's: $10 per bottle. That is though if you're a member - of course. Membership costs $45, which I find very reasonable and average in comparison to other similar wineries. With a membership card you get around 2-4 bucks off per bottle, so if you drink a lot wine (like me), it'll save you quite some money over a years' time. The lady who ran after us was very friendly and helpful and asked us to try their Port (Tawny). Can't say no to that. The 18-year old one tasted lovely and at about 30 bucks for a 2L bottle it isn't too expensive. There's also a younger (6 years I think) and cheaper version of it. I found the store itself a bit dark and it somehow reminded me of a garage. However, great staff and very good prices. I'll be back!

There is off street parking, you can buy cold bottles as well as ice and they usually have some kind of promotion happening where you can win an esky or something like it. The staff are helpful and it is one of those bottle shops that has information and signs around the place telling you what the wine is good accompanying particular foods. They sell some clean skins at a low price, usually under ten dollars and all the standard spirits are available. They are open seven days a week. They sell cigarettes and cigars as well as some crisps and nuts. You can arrange delivery under some circumstances, and even an account by application - so it may be worth having a chat with Phil depending on your needs.

This little weekend adventure came about thanks to a work colleague who had me looking at online…read moredeal website deals one day. For a few bob, we were able to attend a structured, very civilised wine tasting on a lovely sunny day. Nothing better methinks. The standard bubbles-whites-reds tasting was interspersed with a minimal touch of discussion from the lovely sommelier who was happy for us to intersperse a cheeky rose-ay in the tasting mix because the weather was just right. And I'm glad we did because we really liked it and grabbed a couple of bottles on our way out. It is a sit-down session, as you can see from the photos they even give you a scribble pad...after one glass, I was writing nonsense notes like 'the wine has the appearance of a poem about a blonde lass' which made it even more fun! The stand outs for us were the rose-ay and the whites - the sauv blanc and the bubbles are very sessionable and agreeable for the current climate. The reds were OK but we only tried the pinot and the bottom-of-the-range shiraz so we decided to save our red-wine pennies for another day. The complementary cheese platter (thanks to our deal voucher) was a great match to the whites, with all cheese sourced from Woodside Cheese Wrights. Love that WCW! This seems like a funny spot for a cellar door and you don't get any of the magnificent views of the Hills, but for city people it is worth a look and you don't have to get a tour guide to get you here and back. We sat down at midday and left at about 2.15pm so we took our time, but I wouldn't have wanted to have gone any faster. Open limited hours but worth a look in, if only for an excuse to slip away from the hustle and bustle of the real world and try some top hills wines. Tomich = T for tick!
