Situated in the beautiful red building at the Rathaus square in the city centre the Tourist Information Centre is quite easy to find. A basic skill for staff at said place would be to speak decent English I'd say. Alas this is not the case here.
I would also think that a city like Freiburg which for some reason calls itself a green city devoted to sustainability (which I honestly question after spending a week there, it is not something that is neither obvious nor general) and also boast about that on their website, should have lots of interesting tours and outings to said projects and businesses. Which they don't. In fact the guy at the tourist information wanted to know what I meant with 'green businesses' *insert gobsmacked face*. And the only suggestion I got was to visit suburb Vauban (which was a nice enough tram ride and walk, but without any specific tours).
I asked about organic shops and he had to google that (obviously something I could have done myself, I was after a neat list when I asked, what I thought was the source of knowledge to Freiburg...).
For some strange reason they didn't offer bus tours/hikes into the lush hills of Schwarzwald, only maps for doing it yourself.
And yes, a very simple map cost 1€, seems a bit cheap.
All and all, not really worth the visit. Google the information you want and get a free map at the hotel would be my best tip. read more
