This library holds a special place in my heart. This Beaches branch of the Toronto Public Library was my first library that I ever visited. It was four blocks away from my home.
I got my first library card here. It wasn't as sophisticated as what we know and love these days, but I loved my off-yellow paper card. Yes, I'm getting old and I'm embracing it.
As a kid, I came here on Saturday mornings. There were activities on the top floor, from making plasticine characters, to paper crafts. These activities were so much fun.
My elementary years were spent borrowing books and records. One time, I came here to return a record and had forgotten to place the record in the sleeve. I was mortified! I returned home, fetched the record, and returned it to avoid a late fee.
Grades 7 and 8 prompted a lot of homework. I spent hours doing research for whatever papers or projects that I was working on. I felt like I was a fixture here. It continued throughout high school, but I felt that I couldn't find what I was looking for after a while and branched out (pun intended). I visited other libraries in the Toronto area.
I moved away and I don't drop by as much. I also don't want to pay for a Toronto Public Library card. You can get a free one if you live in Toronto or work in the city. I don't qualify for either option. It's not bad. I have Markham (I'm a resident) and Mississauga (I work in this city) library cards to make up for the void.
This library gained popularity over the years that it had to add an extension to the original building. You can clearly see the two building sections when you look at the library from Queen Street East.
The washrooms are down a floor. They have always been clean and nicely maintained.
There is free wifi. If you don't need Internet connectivity with a drink or a snack, you have this nice option. There are lots of ports to plug in your laptop or charge your cell phone.
It's mighty cozy here. I have many fond memories of staying here for hours studying or reading. There are lots of seats.
Maybe someday, I will splurge and get a Toronto library card. For now, I like visiting libraries that I frequented often and reminiscing.
It's street parking only. It's the downside to no longer being able to walk to the library from home.
