Gusto always appealed to me, the tinted windows always inspiring a voyeuristic stare and suggesting a restricted exclusivity. I wanted in. The classic Italian food is ideal for lunch or dinner and the restaurant itself, while sophisticated and quite refined is rather laid back and tere is a very informal feel here which is appealing. There is a mix of salad dishes, appetizers and specials available. Insalata dell'Orto e del Mare or Seafood Salad went down a treat; the ingredients were so fresh and tender and only £5. divine. This place is packed to the rafters on weekends, after all it's in a prime Southport location on Lord Street where all the very nice shops are and the lovely architecturally historic buildings and the beautiful branch of Waterstones set in an old bank and whatnot. So no doubt hoards descend upon it of an evening, thus you'd be wise to book in advance if you fancy a pizza or pasta here. It's classic rustic Italian fare with a sprinkling of creativity. The salads as starters wind up being absolutely ridiculously huge, and would easily do as a main course despite being only £5.95, and the pizza here is the stuff of legends. Everyone in Southport seems to rave about it and rightly so, it's crisp, fresh and exactly as you'd expect it in Italy with lovely simple thin toppings and doesn't leave you feeling like a doughball by the end of it. There are plenty of pastas to choose from too, and the one with artichokes and truffle oil is just divine. Meanwhile if you're catching lunch there the sandwiches can be made with foccacia. Could I be any more sold? The cheese platter with pears is a glorious way to finish off the meal with a sweet and savoury combo, but if you're in the mood for something far more indulgent there's the quintessential tiramisu, chocolate crepes, pistachio ice cream, apple tart or caramelised fruits with amaretto and marscapone which I really couldn't resist - try it and see what heaven really tastes like. All in all, reasonably priced with great service and a superb wine list in a gorgeous setting. Nothing to complain about here.

I was on Blackpool beach and Luke (11 yr old son of my friend Ruth) said he fancied Italian for…read moredinner so I clicked on the Yelp App on my phone and Nunzio's was the first reastaurant listed. It had received five stars from a previous visitor and I eagerly rang to book a table for that same evening! I usually hate seaside holidays and only go because my kids really love going on the beach, wasting money in the arcades and eating unhealthy junk food! So to find a five star rated restaurant in Blackpool of all places made the rest of the holiday a little more palatable! On arrival, the place was already quite busy so I thought that was a good sign. There were five of us altogether and we all chose two courses from the early bird menu. My children shared the chicken wings starter and pepperoni pizza main. Luke had tomato and basil soup with margherita pizza main. Ruth had some kind of salad for her starter and the salmon main course. I had chicken livers starter and also went for the salmon main course. The waitress who served us looked just like Cher Lloyd (of XFactor fame) and my boys even asked her if it was her! She said that she was always mistaken for Cher Lloyd when she was out and she also has a friend who looks just like Mary Byrne so the two of them together always gets lots of second glances when they are out! Anyway, the starters arrived, along with the tomato and cheese garlic bread that we also ordered. My chicken livers were a bit too well done for my liking but there was a lot of it and the garlic bread was really tasty! My salmon was also a little too well done but it was accompanied by potatoes, mange tout and carrots and considering we were in Blackpool I thought the meal was ideal and certainly an infinite improvement on the usual garbage that I eat whilst holidaying at any seaside resort! Ruth made the observation that the pizzas that our children ordered were just the same as the garlic bread starter but without the garlic! I tried the pepperoni pizza that my kids had ordered and found it wasn't as tasty as the garlic bread starter. Indeed it lacked garlic! So I suppose a good tip for all you people who like margherita pizzas is to just order a tomato and cheese garlic bread as its almost half the price and you get an extra ingredient too! In comparison to many Italian restaurants that I have been to in Leeds then Nunzio's would really only get three stars for the quality of their food, however, bearing in mind where we were, the friendliness of the staff and the enjoyment the children had from the whole evening, this deserves an extra star! £75 for five people for two courses including a bottle of wine represent fair value and if I visit Blackpool again then I would almost certainly come back here.

I have to say, I think Nunzio's is my absolute favourite place to eat in the world. I have yet to find somewhere I have enjoyed more. From the reception we received, the décor of the restaurant, the duo of musicians who played beautifully throughout our meal....Everything was just perfect, just like a traditional Italian should be. Usually, I go for pasta in Italian restaurants. I have done each of the three previous times, but this time I decided to go for something different, and settled on the Sea bass with garlic, spinach and pesto. The presentation was fantastic, served with baby potatoes and fresh vegetables, and the fish was simply divine. It melted in the mouth, and coupled with the spinach and pesto combination, this was probably one of the nicest main courses I have ever had. I was a little concerned when it came to desert because the menu looked like one of those ones you get where the deserts have been bought in from a supplier and are served in plastic tubs, a complete no-no and absolute pet hate of mine. I was pleasantly surprised then, when the tiramisu I had was served on a plate with chocolate sauce, and it was delicious. I am not sure if it was home made but, either way, it tasted divine! Washed down with the last of our bottle of house wine, which was superb for a measly £13-ish, we were satisfied and full to the brim. Unlike other restaurants, especially ones as popular as Nunzio's, we never once felt rushed to finish our meal and get out, which can really put a complete dampener on an otherwise lovely meal. We didn't get to the restaurant until around half past 9 and we didn't leave for about 2 hours! It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and I think Nunzio's might be the sort of place that only closes when the last drop of wine has been drunk. It has a complete aura of hospitality, and every single member of staff makes you feel welcome and wanted, almost like part of the family. The food really is outstanding, nothing is rushed, the music and the wine is flowing and bellows of laughter are heard at regular intervals as the restaurant manager, Nunzio himself, does the rounds of the restaurant making sure everyone is having a good evening. Fantastic food, fantastic staff. The epitome of Italian culture in rainy Blackpool!

Anyway, name issues aside, Zenzero is a nice enough place to eat in Formby, offering Italian cuisine that's a bit more sophisticated than the usual pizza and pasta combos on offer elsewhere. Whilst they do offer pizza and pasta dishes, they also offer selections of antipasto, luxury steaks and scallops. Their prices aren't too bad for what you're getting but, as Matt says, the restaurant just doesn't have a particularly friendly or warm atmosphere. Perhaps it's because of the sheer quality of nearby Don Luigi's that Zenzero receives such indifference from me but I guess I just know that there's better places to eat than here. I'd recommend the food, but not really the dining experience itself as a whole.

Well, Zenzero may be an Italian restaurant but it's not really a pizza 'n' pasta place - we're talking instead antipastos of cured meats and marinated vegetables, scallops in champagne and saffron, fillet steak with Parma ham and Madeira sauce. It's all of an excellent standard, and not even all that expensive (with the fillet steak priced under £16). This is a real restaurant and clearly the chefs and management take it all very seriously which is all very admirable. My only real problem with the place is the lack of soul; it's a bit sleek and a bit cold. The staff were friendly enough but there was never the sort of pleasant hustle and bustle, the warm feeling that comes with visiting a really welcoming eatery. Maybe I'm just after something that Zenzero was not intended to supply but restaurants should be about more than food and drink.

I'd been thinking it for years, thus I cut my journey short and hopped off knowing I could get home in a jiffy. It's a good place to have a wander, certainly, and thanks to this wander I located Ariete, yet another Italian eatery. I've often joked on Yelp about how I've found myself returning again and again to Mediterranean fare so many times that I bore even myself, but Ariete was so interesting it managed to buck that trend. Fairly young, this is a place that has a strong ethos. The food is not the focus. Uh-oh, alarm bells go off when you hear phrases like that. So, the food is not the focus - we can basically eat swill so long as the ambience and entertainment is up to scratch? Not the case here. The aim is to get all the senses going, not Heston Blumenthal style with iPods and dry ice but to combine non-invasive live music with delicious food, friendly welcoming staff and elegant decor. Oh and if you're wondering about all the sheepy emblems around, Ariete is Italian for ram. Aries, non? All the European languages link up in some way. You'll get all your usuals - seafood, beef, salads, risottos, pasta, pizza, antipasti for picky days and even some more unusual options such as seafood pancakes (highly recommended, by the way, I don't normally lust after creamy sauces but I can't resist that white wine and cheese option). The sides are superb too, garlic bread to get a room with and dough balls so springy you'll want to keep poking them. Plus the desserts are stunning and the service matches up nicely. Looks like I'll have to cut my train journeys short more often!
