It's definitely a testament to a business doing it right when they are able to rely solely on word of mouth for business. Dan Tomson's Tomson Motor Company can boast as much, with nary a lick of advertising to their name, and rightfully so. When we talk about hidden gems on Yelp, most folk will - Edinburghers certainly - conjure up images of secluded restaurants or secret polish vodka bars, but Tomson Motor Co. is one of Edinburgh's REAL hidden gems. Dan is a fantastically eccentric character and an honest tradesman, a rarity in this world, especially for a mechanic. For example, he offers a MOT service, however these are not carried out by his guys; he uses a third party garage, who he pays a flat rate, devoid of pass. fail or any work required, thereby eliminating any incentive to glorify or exaggerate any shortcomings of the vehicle in question. My last car died inexplicably one day and even Dan struggled to find out why. Where other garages would try something, charge you, try something else, charge you, rinse and repeat, Dan picked up the phone and had a very honest conversation with me about it. Stressing that he was almost 'at a loss', Dan went on to explain the couple of ideas he thought the problem might be, and, as he wasn't sure what the problem was, offered a cut down price to explore both ideas. He eventually solved the problem by replacing the battery with one of his own, and as it was only into January, he knocked the battery off the bill, citing it as a 'late Christmas present'. What a guy. As long as Dan keeps the business going, I'll keep bringing my business to him. He has a wealth of similarly reliable contacts for work such as car electronics, who he is happy to refer you to if he thinks you've come to the wrong place. Now how many garages would you see knocking business away? Long live Tomson Motor Co.! read more

This garage is awesome. They fixed my car even SOONER than quoted (same day) and were really friendly, useful, honest, and explained to me exactly what was wrong with it. Highly recommended. read more

I can't recommend this garage highly enough, helpful, honest and very reasonably priced, they go out of their way to help and are a pleasure to deal with, which in my experience of garages is very difficult to find. I would say look no futher than Tomson Motor Co. read more

It was freezing and the traffic was racing by not a nice place to be. Anyway they arrived within 15minutes I was so happy to see him. The guy was brilliant checked my car, I asked him if you could take it to the garage which was no problem. Ram was the recovery driver and he was so friendly and put me at ease, told me to sit in the cab as I was freezing and bit overwelmed with all this. I have never used this service before but these guys were fantastic, everyone should make sure that Robert W Brownlie is their breakdown service.

The owner and I agreed on a date to drop the car off at his premises. His working hours are very limited, which is not ideal when in full time employ. Anyway, we managed a time for the drop off, and because the place closed around 16.00 o left my car outside for service the next day. When collecting the car 3 days later, I noticed a massive dent at the front plus scratches. When I asked what happened, I did not get many answers and especially that there is nothing the garage can do. I did not get much support to get this sorted and all fault at the garage side was declined. Long story short, I would not necessarily recommend this garage based on the location, nor the aftercare. Although the service seemed to have been fine, you are risking lots more. The issue is that it's not the best area to leave your car and whilst you save on service costs you might need to pay for the repairs If the car would have been returned in the original state it would have been a 4 star.

I took my Audi A3 in, after being serviced by Audi who had said that it would cost me 1200£ to fix some outstanding issues. After speaking to Dan at Tomson Motor Co. he assured me there are probably place where I could save money, and to bring the car in and they would take a look. He had the car over night and then called the next day to deliver a lengthy explanation to work which does require doing and gave evidence for all the work he felt I had been mis-advised about from Audi. He took the car down to a friends MOT garage to uncover some balancing issues, and alignment issues. Once he knew all outstanding work which was required (which has require close inspection of the front suspension / wheel removeal / taking the car onthe MOT rollers etc) he called me before a single penny was spent. All in all this cost me 185£. A massive reduction from 1200£! It was quick, efficent, and really gave me confidence. I went to the garage on recommendation of the wave of positive reviews of this garage, and I'm very glad I did. Another satisfied customer is born! My car's driving like new again. read more

Quite simply one of the best garages I have had the pleasure of using. Phoned on a Sunday to enquire about an MOT for my Saab thinking I would leave a message and call back. To my surprise Dan (who I believe runs the garage) was in working and advised that while they were busy he would do his best to fit me in. I called back on Monday morning and was asked to bring the car down at lunch time. I got a call that afternoon to pick it back up with it having failed its first MOT but having been fixed and re-tested all in the same day! The price for the work was extremely reasonable and the service from Dan was top class. I have always had my doubts about garages and the rates the charge ( mainly because as I am not very knowledgeable about the inner workings of a car) and this is the first time I have felt completely satisfied. I will be recommending his services to all friends and family and would recommend that anyone reading this review who is looking for work to be done on their car should phone the garage now. They really are one of the 'good guys' in Edinburgh. read more

Absolutely outstanding garage which I discovered on recommendation of a friend. No overinflated prices, no work being recommended that isn't needed, just great service from a genuine bunch of mechanics. It isn't often that you could call people in the automotive trade gentlemen, but in Dan's case he's an exception. Knowledgable and practical, I cannot recommend them highly enough so for all work in the future where I'm not in the position to do it myself, Dan will definitely be getting a call. That their diary is more often than not very full, combined with their reliance on word of mouth, is an utter testament to the quality of work and service that they carry out. Don't be fooled by either location, or of the 'old school' feel from their garage (if you compare to main dealer). They rely on experience, ability and all the other qualities that seem to be lacking in the overpriced mainstream. read more

I found this garage through internet reviews and I was not left disappointed. Dan is a true gentleman and a professional motor engineer. I will definitely be taking my car back here. He fixed the car very quickly, was patient, willing to take the time to listen the problems I've been having and the overall customer service from all the staff was just superb. The price was very reasonable and I left a very happy customer. I will definitely be taking my car back here. Reluctant to write Dan (now retired) and the 'boys' a good review for fear of too many other folk in Edinburgh finding out and swamping them with too much work which might prevent me using them! BUT...been a customer of these guys for over 20 years now and they've always been brilliant: friendly, efficient, - they all know their stuff - honest & straightforward and much faster, cheaper than the big name garages in Edinburgh. I would highly recommend this garage. We had a problem with our VW Touareg which we had taken to a number of other garages in Edinburgh and no one was able to fix it. Dan and his team could not have been more helpful. They diagnosed and fixed the problem straight away but refused to charge us until we were happy that the problem had definitely gone away. The problem was fixed and I was very happy to receive such a reasonable invoice. Money well spent. Thank you Dan. read more

The best garage i have visited so far... had some problem with my passat so i phoned at the morning and got it fixed the same day...it was only a small thing but no one told me to come back next day as usually you can hear from others...really happy with service. Excellent garage. Fixed my car for a good price and were very good humoured and friendly. Kwik Fit said I needed £150 of work done, but I took it took it to Tomson Motors and they couldn't find anything wrong with it and didn't charge me for investigating the car!! Very good service will bring my car back here again and again. Thanks guys! read more

This place is actually on my street I used to go to kwik Fit etc, but a family member urged me to give my business to the local garage as they'll appreciate it more. I did, and I'm glad I did Dan & the guys saw my car the same day and I had it back the next afternoon. Very reasonable, and a very very friendly and honest service. read more

Highly recommended. Very friendly and honest and cheap. Don't be put of my the chaos in the garage - they are very efficient and organised. Had a whole catcon and exhaust replaced for £230 after being quoted £710 elsewhere. Also on the 22 bus route so easy to get to and from without car. Will be going back. read more
