We are fortunate to have such a great public library. It's a joy to be here. I will not be surprised if someone tells me it's one of the best public library in the world of a city this size. I particularly love the documentary film collections on DVDs. I don't have Netflix and amazon film services ... I don't have television cables either. I really don't need it. I don't have time for it. This is how I give the finger to evil multinational corporations. I take advantage of the library catalog and use its hold service to my heart's content. I really hope the public libraries like this will continue to thrive. Those DVDs educated me far more than anything I learned in grad schools. Seriously. I've been trying to checkout a state park pass from Library of Things ... it has not been successful. They told me that they only have 4 passes and 10 in the entire library system. I will keep trying! Maybe I will get lucky one day! Hey, I heard a public library in San Francisco has sewing machines! I would love a sewing and knitting/crocheting workshops here ...helping me give more fingers to the corporations by sewing my own underwears ... why not? Maybe you can cooperate with Sew Green to make it happen ... My only "complaint" is that I wish the purchase request process was more transparent .. i.e. if I could get a feedback from the librarian as to the possibility for the purchase of a particular item I want to borrow, and receiving a notification when the item is purchased ... that would be delightful ... but then I know that we can set the catalog search parameter to alert us to the items when it is cataloged in the library system, so no complaints ... I don't make a habit of reviewing libraries, but boy does this one deserve it. I came in for the first time and signed up for a library card, a breezy process that took all of five minutes. They do require some sort of proof of residence, which I luckily had on my phone, but otherwise the process was very simple and easy. They have a massive selection of books, DVDs, computers and . They've really got all of the resources you could ask for in a library, and their librarians are attentive, helpful, friendly and familiar with the system they run. A large variety of people come here-- kids, students, people working for the day. My favorite spot is the reading room in the back, which is always very quiet and peaceful, and which has a mood-setting ambience of a tranquil space well-suited for reading or work on a computer. It has large glass windows that let in a lot of light, and its set up with lots and lots of outlets for laptops. An outstanding library, perhaps the best-equipped place I've seen yet. read more

I like a lot of things about the library -- but I'm writing to day to express concern about some current disturbing trends and poor decisions in my view ... Lately I've noticed on multiple occasions that large display areas are given over to offensive propagandist displays by extremist fringe organizations ... These are presented with equal valence to many other legitimate cultural, educational, and artistic displays in the library space -- which may be confusing, particularly to young people ... By the same token, the back meeting rooms are sometimes allocated to notorious cult groups ... In my view the library should be a safe space for children and adults -- not a place where extremist groups recruit the vulnerable! read more

I'm constantly impressed by this wonderful public library. Excellent selection for a small city like Ithaca, and they can order items in from neighboring libraries if they don't have something you're looking for. The Tompkins County Public Library is proof of the great community services available in Ithaca. The facility is sunny, has a great reading room in the back, and has lots of computers hooked up to the internet for public use. The dvd selection here is stellar -- there are some films you can get at the library that the local chain rental place doesn't have. And for a very small fee, you can request particular dvds within the TCPL system even if they aren't usually held at the Green Street branch. read more

If you reside in Tompkins County, you can borrow books, videos, and CDs from here even if you're a Cornell or Ithaca College student! I LOVE their CD selection, including all the classical music of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, etc that I enjoyed during graduate school. For a public library, this is the best I've ever seen. Large, expansive, clean, sunny, well-maintained building. Great selection of books, CDs (good classical selection), DVDs. Staff is always willing to help you find what you need. The library also hosts community events, such as book drives and workshops and such. I love coming here! read more

This is one of the best libraries I have ever been to. The architecture is huge and expansive, which makes the library feel welcoming and anonymous at the same time. Their internet services are so simple to use (but the password is case-sensitive) and the magazine selection is great. Also the librarians have generally been pretty helpful. In general, I love this library and would reccomend to everyone that needs a place of serenity to check it out. read more

This is such a cozy and clean library with a huge selection of books and facilities. They have a gigantic children, teen and young adult section with couches and computers. In the more adult section they have big research textbooks and everyone is very respectful and quiet. In the back, they have a big lounge where you can study on their desks and comfy chairs. It's very nice place and the library card registration should be quick and easy, if you have a card, you can get wifi. Also the return process of books and such are very simple as there are garbage can like boxes outside the library and you just drop your books off there, you don't need to consult anyone. read more

Hands down the best public library I've ever been to. I've learned to take a tote bag whenever I go in, because I almost never make it out the door without at least five or six books. They have an excellent selection of books, CDs, and DVDs, and they're always getting new items. They also have a great variety of free programs such as readings, book groups, and writing workshops. The staff and volunteers are friendly, the building is clean and well-maintained, and the hours are usually convenient, though I wish they were open on Sundays year-round.
