I work in the film industry as a film editor and used to work next door to them ( Jigami…read moreHairdressers) at a post production place, Art For Noise. A friend recommended I pop in to speak to a colourist at their new shop (now Natural Colour Works), as recently I have tried something a little different with me hair... I started the process of dying my hair grey. Im 60 this year and I was so tired of dying my roots dark brown every 8 days.. I wanted to go dark grey all over and let my silver grow into that. But as anyone knows who has tried this.. its not an easy process. You have to go thru many stages to get where you want to be.. And the recent toner I had put on was a little too lavender for my taste and I wanted to replace that toner with another darker grey toner. But I wanted to use some more natural products if possible that would be gentler to my hair. So yesterday I went into NCW for a consultation. I spoke to a young woman in her 30's who looked at my hair reluctantly and asked me what it was that I hoped to achieve.. and then she said, " Well, we do have a wonderful natural product that would remove the toner you have.. But I certainly WONT DO IT.. as I think what you have done to your hair was a very bad idea.. we would NEVER do that here!.. Let me ask if anyone else here would be willing to do it." She went off and asked a senior stylist.. he tilted his head in my direction, made a face.. then shook his head. She returned. " He REFUSES to do it as well. But there is a place around the corner I can send you to called Bleach London, they will bleach your hair as much as you want them to... but that will certainly ruin your hair even more than you already have. I would never do what you have done to my hair.. as I love my long hair." to which I replied, " Let me get this straight. You say you have a natural product that will remove this toner without damaging my hair, but you are refusing to offer me that.... but are instead sending me somewhere where they will surely damage my hair? Sorry but i'm confused. I do not want to bleach my hair again.. I just want a different toner on it." She then went to 2 other stylists who also turned around and looked at me, made face of disgust and shook their heads NO. Their clients also turned around and stared at me.. (this is a very small salon, where you could hear everything that was being said) This public shaming made me feel just terrible. I left. I can honestly say, this was the most unpleasant, unhelpful and embarrassing hair experiences of my life. I have never encountered such rudeness or snobbery in a hair salon! To say to someone.. yes we "could " use our wonderful natural products on you but we refuse to do so.." What is the point of that? Other than to try to make me feel really terrible. I left the salon and walked to my car and burst into tears. I desperately do NOT want to be a woman in my 60's with died brown hair. I think it looks ridiculous. But really, who needs an experience like that? Trying to grow old gracefully is tough enough already! Thankfully I didnt give up and I found a colourist with some compassion as well as talent... not in Soho. https://www.facebook.com/Natural-Colour-Works-Organic-Hairdressing-1617855811833496/?pnref=lhc

The salon was cozy and willing to schedule me as a walk-in for an appointment that day. The stylist was attentive - listening me describe in detail what I wanted and gently pushing me towards what was realistic**. She was friendly and talkative (very important qualities in someone who is going to spend hours hovering over your head, touching your hair). The products that the salon uses were sweet-smelling and didn't feel harsh on my hair. * Bleach London would've made me do a 48-hour skin test before touching my hair. NCW also has a skin test policy (to make sure people aren't allergic to their toner), but they were able to accommodate me by dying my hair without toning it. Cheers to those who accommodate! ** I have naturally jet-black hair at the roots and honey-blonde everywhere else. I wanted to go full platinum, which just wasn't happening in the four hours of time I had.

This review is for the new Strand branch…read more Clean and funky looking, this salon has an especially nice hair washing area with coloured mood lighting. I was offered the usual drink and magazines, but agree with Michelle T that the junior staff were pretty robotic. I never pay much to have my hair cut, and I consider £50 far too much for a wash and trim, but if you quote 'online 50% off', it's a good deal. I was going to give an 'a-ok' review, but reading Michelle's reminded me that I too got a different haircut to the one I asked for, and that although it worked out well for me, that is not actually a fine way to run a hairdressing business. Because I left with half price snazzy hair I just smiled to myself at the stylist's arrogance, but thinking about it, how dare he make it up as he went along, without consulting me! Also, the receptionist was pretty pushy about trying to make me sign up to a loyalty card, and looked at me as if my refusal (which I had to give 3 times) was weird. I was not impressed that they used my mobile number, given to secure the booking, to subsequently bombard me with marketing texts. So, as long as you are up for a surprise, go here for the 50% off deal. Otherwise, it's just an expensive central London chain, which I suspect is only of any real interest/use to people who work nearby.

I made an appointment for a Brazilian Blowdry treatment via Treatwell which was very easy to do. I have long hair and wanted just a trim so after making the appointment I called the salon to see how much they would charge for a trim and they said not to worry about it. I was a little nervous after hearing that because in my experience London salons want to charge you at least 30 GBP even for a trim, which is ridiculous. My appointment was with Jessica and while she hardly spoke a word of English, her technique is fantastic. There were plenty of gals there that could translate what I said to Jessica and it was no problem to get across what I wanted. Also, I'm not a fan of small talk so I didn't mind not talking to Jessica. I was able to get a wash, dry, treatment, and trim - all for 149 GBP via Treatwell. The salon didn't charge me extra for my trim - so happy about this! In my experience for over 10 years of getting this treatment, that is an incredible value for the technique, service, and overall experience. I will absolutely be back.

To accurately describe what happened, I'll give a chronological list of events. Tuesday: called, got a woman on the phone who kept asking me to repeat myself. So, on the third try of telling her I wanted my "hair blown out and and straightened and to add in my own clip in extensions, hopefully around 14:00", she said "okay, how is 13:30?"...etc. She then asked "do you have a preference on stylist?". I joked and said "someone good" and she said, "hold on, I can't hear you" and kind of half went outside. I said never mind and that I will see them tomorrow. (They also couldn't (wouldn't?) take my phone number because it's a US number). Wednesday, 13:30: I arrive at the salon and was greeted nicely and brought directly to the chair. I pull out my extensions and the woman (the same woman on the phone it turns out) looks slightly horrified and says she "doesn't do extensions". Ok. No biggie. "Is there anyone else who can?". She goes off asking the other 3 or 4 stylists if they now how. A girl says no at first, then yes. Then they tell me one girl who knows how to blow dry will do that part and another who knows how to put in clip in extensions will do that part. I tell them that this is ridiculous, then the same, "nice" guy who greeted me got very defensive and was no longer Mr. Nice Guy. Wednesday, 13:40: I walk out in search for any other salon that can do this. It took me until 14:30 to find a place, and boy was I lucky. PLEASE save yourself the time and aggravation (if you look 2-3 reviews below, you can see that they similarly screwed someone else over) and go to Haringtons on Poland Street. Nick was wonderful and my hair looked amazing. If you're tired of reading, I've already included the important bits. I had a debut performance at a very famous venue in London and I was to arrive for a soundcheck at 3 (in Soho, luckily). My image is a big part of what I do, so I depend on salons doing their part and listening to me when I tell them what I need (I think that's called "good business practice"). That's why I always am sure to tell them that I have these extensions, because, like the girl at Viva, not everyone does them.

I accepted a coffee and found the cafe americano I received of enjoyable quality. The colourist then came for a consult, and I discussed my hair history with her (years of dying it black myself with only a recent salon-quality lightener to lift the colour to brown), and we decided on a semi-permanent colour. The service itself took about as much time as I would have expected, and the assistant gave me a relaxing shampoo. Both the colourist and assistant were chatty, although the overall vibe of the salon wasn't particularly welcoming so I felt a bit awkward throughout the experience. Perhaps it was because it wasn't bustling with business. Overall, the salon experience was pretty average and the price was par for central London; I had no immediate complaints after leaving, but I also had nothing particularly good to say about the salon. Nothing stood out as better than the rest. Unfortunately, the colour washed out after just one shampoo at home with products specially formulated for coloured hair. I didn't bother going back.
