I feared this was coming a couple of months ago when Tomato Mountain posted multiple desperate-sounding job ads for warehouse workers. Today, our delivery box arrived with $17 worth of items missing-- even though the items were checked off on the label stuck to the box, and that's a label that gets signed off on by two people. Which means, this isn't an instance of items simply going out of stock while the boxes were being filled. This is multiple staff not caring what was put in my family's delivery box, and then not caring to review to make sure that what was supposed to be there was there. My family really likes the Tomato Mountain experience, but it's absolutely unacceptable for food items to be left out of a delivery because staff are phoning it in and don't care about what they're doing. We've experienced this before with supermarket delivery, but we expected a lot more from Tomato Mountain. Especially since you select exactly the items to be delivered, this now screws up my family's meal plan for the next seven days, and we have to go scrambling to replace the items that are missing. More importantly, now we know we can't trust the service anymore. And if I can't trust my CSA, why continue? I take an extraordinarily dim view of grocery and food delivery services gratuitously screwing up delivery orders because of not paying attention. The entire reason my family orders from Tomato Mountain is to make the produce we consume better, our lives easier, and the local food system stronger. But making our lives more difficult because some staff don't care? My partner immediately suggested that we cancel our subscription. I agree. I just requested a refund on the missing items, and the cancellation of our subscription. We're shifting our produce purchases back to Whole Foods. Losing customer trust is the biggest deal there is as far as I'm concerned, and that's why this updated review is a single star. read more

I have now been a CSA member for a few months. What is CSA? It stands for Community Supported Agriculture. I actually found them via localharvest.org/csa/ which helps people pair up with organic farmers. Why would anyone join such a program? Well, the truth is there is just so much toxic stuff in our American food system. In the past, I have joined other organic food distributor companies that deliver food straight to your home. The problem is that initially they are great but then over time the quality tended to wane. Therefore, I would quit my subscription and go back to buying my produce at farmers markets or Wholefoods. Well, I am glad to report that Tomato Mountain sends me pristine produce and high-quality meats and fish. I believe that they provide me with a good value for what I receive because I no longer have to drive around to find good wholesome quality food. They drop off a box of selected items right at my doorstep. I highly recommend that you also join Tomato Mountain or any other farm listed in the localharvest.org website. Some farmers utilize lethal pesticides that will increase their yield and make them more money. Food manufactures have slowly over time introduced lots of toxic ingredients that in the past were not utilized to help them make items cheaper, last longer, and make them more money. Plenty of grocery stores have also discovered ways in which to make their produce appear perfect and last longer on their shelves thus making them more money. Meat manufactures force their animals to live in horrible conditions and introduce their stocks to hormones and lots of antibiotics to increase their yields and once again make more money. Many of these practices are banned around the world. But for the sake of making more money, these practices are okay here?!? Folks you need to wake up. Like the old saying goes, "If everyone is jumping off of a pier, will you?". Unfortunately, most people still look for the cheapest items to purchase in grocery stores because they are trying to stay within their budgets. Well, let me ask you, how much is your health worth? You either pay now or pay later with your health. There is just no way I can cover all of things that are bad for you with this review. I've been a member of this CSA for a couple of months now, and I absolutely love it, getting organic, high-quality local produce all through the winter months delivered right to my door. This isn't like a typical CSA -- you pay as you go, if you don't need produce on certain weeks you can always put your box on hold, and there are a huge number of items to choose from, because it's not just one farm, but a collection of farms and also other local businesses (for example, you can also get add-ons such as sourdough bread, honey, syrup). And the vegetables themselves are so fresh and tasty, even in the middle of winter. I'm looking forward to what the experience will be like in the spring and summer months. read more

I just love Tomato Mountain. Their produce is absolutely wonderful. Because of them I have tried so many more less common vegetables. Had never ever heard of black radishes, but now I make black radish soup and black radish salad. Besides their ever fresh fruits and vegetables they have multiple other offerings. Fresh eggs, dairy items, fungi, grains and more. I am a single person and their smallest weekly box is just perfect for me. I have been looking for a CSA since Covid took the one I used to farmer's markets only. And then a friend mentioned this one. I love so many things about Tomato Mountain. 1. They customize based on people. This is huge as I live alone and many are for families. 2.They deliver! Just leave a cooler outside if you are not home. 3. You can add on to your box - items from candles to kombucha. 4. If you are out of town you can put your order on hold or donate it. The staff are very nice and responsive too. Tomato Mountain is 3-4 stars so we'll err on the side of 4. I have used a CSA in the past but it was several years ago. Whilst the pandemic was at its height, I didn't want to have to go to the grocery often to get veggies. Tomato Mountain delivers directly to your door, which is super convenient! It is rather expensive though with the delivery charge so that's part of the reason I had to put a pause on it for a bit. You can have a small or large share, and I think you can also choose to have it delivered weekly or biweekly. To pause it is very easy; just log in and add a hold. It's easy for you to make changes to the items in your share, too. You'll have a couple days to be able to make adjustments to what is supposed to be delivered before they get locked in. I also really appreciated that the people delivering sent me a text when they were about 5 minutes away. If I forgot to put out my little cooler, that gave me a chance to get ready for them. OMG I love Tomato Mountain. I used to be a CSA member back in 2015-2016 but had to pause because I wasn't using all my vegetables I would receive in my 1/2 share. I rejoined in 2020 when Tomato Mountain revamped their whole system and now you can pick exactly what goes in your box every week! I love receiving local, organic produce, meats, dairy, special treats, etc. weekly and delivered directly to me. I feel so healthy and good when I eat from Tomato Mountain. This is a great company. I appreciate the quality of everything they deliver--the eggs, fruits and veggies, meat, and other goods are all amazing. I also appreciate that we can change our boxes up based on our own families eating styles--as a non beet lover, the ability to not get beets in the spring is a real winner. We've been Tomato Mountain customers for years...we used to have Angelic Organics, but Tomato Mountain's home delivery and varying box sizes were a huge help for us. Now that they've redesigned their website and allow for weekly swaps, it's even better than before! And what is in season ..my box recently had purple potatoes .sweet onions that I made into French onion soup, cranberries that where into orange cranberry loaf, acorn squash that I roasted with brown sugar and butter in the oven along with fresh carrots...when you do a CSA with tomato mountain you get the organic food at better than supermarket price... raspberries and strawberries are the sweetest you will ever taste...it's the best way to buy organic produce. This is the best farm share! It comes to your door, they have lots of size options (including "solo" which is actually small enough for me as a single person cooking alone during COVID), and they do a really amazing job of switching up what's in the box every week. With previous CSAs, I always had the problem of more produce than I could go through... and yet another celery root. Tomato Mountain has plenty of the basic vegetables, and a good mix of weirdos, from cranberries to huskcherries to blue potatoes to, yes of course, celery root. The Farmers Pantry option for adding to your share is especially useful during the pandemic, and the items I've added on occasion (granola, eggs, cornmeal) are all top-notch and well worth the premium price. read more

I started getting deliveries from Tomato Mountain in December of 2021. I can't say enough wonderful things about them! The produce stays fresh for a long time. Sometimes shopping for vegetables and fruit as a household of 1 person can be hard when the produce goes bad quickly, but since Tomato Mountain eliminates the intermediaries with farmers the produce lasts longer. They make the deliveries really convenient. They respond to any questions or concerns in a timely manner. They have so many options for foods each week, and it's encouraged me to try new foods/ expand my cooking. read more

Not just good but life-changing, I've been with them for more than five years and now that the system is customizable and full of options it's covering so much of our food we hardly ever have to go to grocery stores or markets, the delivery is so convenient and the quality always brilliant. Grocery store delivery often brings bruised or sub-par produce but Tomato Mountain is the opposite, always bringing us produce that's stunningly fresh & gorgeous. Their own veggies sweetest spinach, carrots, and tomatoes ever, amazing peppers, salsas, and variety, but the add-ons from partner farms now include stunning sourdough bread, fruit, frozen fruits & veggies, fantastic firm tofu, great milk & cheeses, oils & vinegars, miso, hot sauce, a rotation of pre-made things like pies & veggie burgers to be step-savers on busy nights, and a constant array of new additions. We absolutely love Tomato Mountain. The home deliveries are convenient, the food is DELICIOUS, and the recipe suggestions and descriptions of unusual items are incredibly helpful. It is wonderful to have access to top-tier local, organic food year-round. The new website also allows customization of your box (including subbing out veggies for cheese, yogurt, etc.), which means we can always order things we know we will eat. They're a smaller farm but I really appreciate them for many reasons, mainly that they feel very eco-friendly. They rarely used any plastic whatsoever in their CSA boxes and they also took everything back to reuse. I've done other CSAs and everything was packaged the same way you would get it in a grocery store which I don't appreciate. Secondly, they allow substitutions which not all CSAs do allow. Also, I like their little online shop sourcing stuff from other local farms. Their delivery people were always friendly and would text you when the box was on your front porch. This CSA is fantastic! Especially the pantry- you can "add on" all kinds of things. Pickled mushrooms, the best feta cheese ever, nice spicy jam, european style sausages. Nice apples too. And salsa. They had a booth at my farmer's market this past summer. I was excited to find a CSA that 1) delivers to the home and 2) offers a Winter subscription, so I signed up. The winter subscription has been less than overwhelming. It gets delivered every two weeks, and since the first delivery in January (it's mid-March as I write this), 90% is *the same stuff*. Every time! A big bag of carrots (like 3 lbs). A jar of homemade tomato sauce. A bag of spinach. A couple times, some frozen cooked squash. Okay, once they added a few turnips, once some roasted peppers. Today's delivery they threw in a jar of jam. But honestly. Enough with the carrots, spinach, and tomato sauce! Jeez! I guess this is why CSAs don't offer winter subscriptions. ;-) Otherwise they've been fine. They deliver in the middle of the night like Santa Claus, right to my front porch, in a sturdy box, but request that you leave out a cooler so they can reuse the boxes. That's fine, I try to remember to put it out the night before. Also they have an optional eggs subscription, which I get. A dozen eggs. They look and taste just like the Organic Valley eggs I get from the grocery store though. I was expecting something similar to the eggs my chicken-raising neighbors sometimes share, a more intensely-flavored egg, with a deep yellow, almost orange yolk. Nope. Just regular eggs. read more

I was looking forward to the summer CSA from Tomato Mountain Farm. It was exciting that there was a CSA that would deliver overnight to me. Unfortunately it has been impossible to set up a time for the staff to come pick up a key to be able to drop off the boxes inside a secured lobby. Fabulous veggies, but here's the struggle. We've been getting veggies from the Tomato Mountain Farm for a little over a year now. Veggies were good quality and tasty every single time, deliveries were on time, we've had absolutely no issues with them. Communication was great, proactive and clear, especially when issues would arise. In 2018 the review would be 5 stars, no questions asked. Then, something changed in November / December 2018. Issues with orders started to occur. While veggies are still good, simple things like missing deliveries started happening. One time driver apparently left the box of veggies in front of the business next door to our residential building in downtown Chicago. Look, there is no way you can be confused with addresses, absolutely no way. Tomato Mountain said they'd re-deliver, well that didn't occur even after multiple messages back and forth. Then, again, just this week no delivery. Driver apparently left it at a wrong building. They said they will correct but.. I was sort of going to cook with the stuff this morning. Oh well. I will wait. We got both small and medium shares, depending on how many of us were in the household at a time. The small was perfect for the 2 adults; the medium is great for more home cooking for 2 adults + kid or 3 adults, and can also be stretched to 4 adults - but not all of your meals will have these veggies in them then. read more

We've only been members for a month but we love it! We signed up for the solo share (1-2 people) and for $75 a month we get weekly boxes of fresh organic seasonal veggies delivered right to our doorstep. In the past 4 weeks we've gotten: beautiful tomatoes of many varieties, bok choy, rainbow chard, Swiss chard, collard greens, lettuce, sweet peppers, jalapeños, garlic, scallions, acorn squash and various fresh herbs (just to name a few). We also opted to add a dozen fresh organic eggs per box for an extra $10/mo. With organic eggs going for $4/dozen it's so worth it! Fresh organic and RIPE veggies are so much more full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients than the supermarket stuff. All of our veggies come from one small organic sustainable farm. I love knowing where my food comes from AND that I'm supporting local agriculture and dreams. read more

We've been Tomato Mountain members since they restarted their CSA a few years ago and it's always been great. Way more food than we know what to do with, and it comes right to the house! The produce is super fresh and varied enough that we don't get tired of anything during the season. They have a year-round option (which we've been doing since it started) and it keeps us in veggies all through the winter. I just happened to stumble upon this CSA while perusing Yelp. I'm so glad I found it!! First of all - home delivery. That is awesome! They deliver to a pretty big area (the father out the more you have to pay for delivery, but it is worth it). I get a nice portion of fresh, organic veggies every Thursday night. Everything is there before I leave for work on Friday morning, so I can put it away. All I have to do it set a cooler outside and the next day it is full! The produce is really great. Awesome quality and seasonal. I get something new each week. And it is year-round! In the winter they deliver every other week, but the portions are bigger. They have different portions depending on how many people will be eating it in your household (I get the solo share). They also have different payment plans (monthly, bi-annual, and annual). If you pay bi-annually or annually you get a week or two free. If you are not able to get your share one week, they will donate your share to a shelter in Evanston, which is awesome. They also send out a weekly email letting you know what you will be getting, ideas on how to prepare the veggies, a sneak peek of the next week's goodies. If you are looking for quality, organic, local veggies, this is the way to go. read more

I've had a membership with TMF for about a year, and I have nothing but good things to say.The produce is affordable, delicious, varied, and beautiful - and the emailed newsletters/recipes are lovely too. The convenience of having fresh, organic produce delivered to my door can't be overstated, and Chris spells out the exact value of each box so you always know how it stacks up to what the produce is worth individually. We receive our CSA box every week from them. We've been members since September 2014 and after a few hiccups with the delivery, everything seems to be going smoothly. The produce we receive is top-quality (but not super-cheap) and the variety helped us explore new ways with cooking veggies. Their eggs are pricey but... oh, so good! Customer service is personable and helpful. What can I say? If you look for affordability, I suppose there are cheaper options. But this is not about the bang for the buck. This is about knowing where your food comes from and being able to enjoy your carrots without worrying how much pesticide has been sprayed on them. Or discover you actually love kale, because it tastes so different than the store-bought one. And supporting real people. In short, I think it's totally worth it. The variety has also been great -- we're not getting the same vegetables over and over again. I love this CSA! Organic. Home delivery. And I absolutely love that I can add on extra items each week, including stuff from other small farms that they partner with. The veggies are really nicely varied and include a variety of greens. You can tell by the smell and taste that the veggies are freshly harvested. Their customer service and delivery staff is friendly and responsive. I get a Small Share for a 2-person household (vegan/vegetarian), plus I typically add on a couple of extra things every week. And I love that if you're out of town, they will send your box to a foster home that they partner with. I did a lot of comparison shopping and the price with the home delivery is really just a couple of dollars more than other CSAs. Even still, I thought about this for a long time. But I had another CSA before, and in my opinion, the weekly pick up works if it's already on your way. If you have to go too far out of your way, you'll start to resent your CSA. The home delivery makes this easy to incorporate into our busy lives. I love getting produce fresh while it still has all it's nutrients. And I really love giving this money right to the farmers and not to some big grocery chain. read more

I ordered their winter subscription for my husband because he had asked for a smoothie blender for Christmas and I though this would be a great addition to keep him on track. I realize it is winter subscription so you can't be too picky, but it has been awful. It really should be called a winter carrot abundance. Seriously. STOP WITH THE CARROTS! Please, I'm begging you. I used to love carrots. Now I loathe them. NO ONE can eat that many carrots. No one. Basically I paid a couple hundred dollars for carrots. I'll admit the spinach is really good. Sometimes we get a jar of seriously tin-tasting tomato sauce. Once we got frozen sweet peppers that were great. Every now and again we get a beet or a small jar of jam. But every time, without out fail, 3-4 pounds of whole carrots. It's insane. Not even an occasional potato or leek. No kale or brussel spouts. Just carrots. Every two weeks, in the middle of the night a large box of carrots dropped on our door step. At first it was funny, now I can't even give them away because even all our friends are sick of them! The other small complaint is that I signed up on their website and purchased the subscription as a gift for my husband, they even have a gift purchase option. However it immediately emailed him a confirmation, therefore ruining the surprise. So that was kind of a bummer. But here's the bottom line. I thought this would be fun and interesting. I was hoping it would be fab enough that we would become year-round subscribers. I can go to Stanley's any day and by carrots. I wanted to try new things and get new recipes and be inspired. No such luck with this one. I hope the summer one is better but I am not willing to take my chances. read more
