I stopped here for lunch and the place was really busy. After a short wait I placed my order for 1/2 order of hot turkey and 1/2 order of hot beef so I could try both. This is one of the only places I have ever seen the 1/2 order available, it's a great idea. They brought my food to my table and the first thing I noticed was the turkey sandwich not only had mashed potatoes, but it also had stuffing, all generously coated in gravy. The Turkey was tender and flavorful. It was a good portion considered it was a 1/2 order. The beef came with mashed potatoes and gravy. The beef looked dry, but it tasted good. The gravy was also good tasting. If I had to say anything, the mashed potatoes needed salt, which is an easy fix tableside. Other than that, this was a great meal for the money and the 1/2 orders are really nice to see, I wish more places had that. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

Ok so. I have A LOT to say. First I would give it a 1 start if it wasn't for the staff. The staff were incredibly nice. They actually looked like they WANTED to be there. I ate inside only 1 time. I asked for fried fish. When they came back they gave me chicken instead. It would've been fine if it was warm. Instead the chicken was rather cold and tasted stale. The second time we went here was through the drive through. We look and in the kitchen there was fries all over the floor. Along with tiny black spects that kept moving. My mother and I suspect it was bugs. The Dairy Queen is good. Just not Tom Tumbs. read more

Probably the worst hamburger we've ever had! The Delux hamburger was a bigger piece of meat and I thought it was supposed to come with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles & onions. No Mayo no anything! Just pickles & onions, just like the regular hamburger ‍. At least the fries were good and were the shakes that you had to go back to the front where the DQ was located! We like to eat local when traveling, and I remember going to this restaurant as a child. When we arrived and put in our order, it took a very long time as the team behind the counter was confused about how to put together people's meals. The restaurant was very dirty, and when a server dropped a glass right in front of an entrance door, rather than help, other employees who were taking a break and the dining room loudly yelled and mocked her. My friend and I went here. We both ordered meals that had dressing. I ordered an extra side of dressing. She received more dressing than I did. Made no sense to me. I went up to the counter to get the rest of my dressing and they acted like they were doing me a favor by giving me what I had paid for. The floor is usually so greasy you can slide on it. If I drive between Estherville and Ames on US 169, the Tom Thumb Drive Inn is a logical stop to enjoy a bite and otherwise take a welcome break. This place was here when I grew up in this area, and it seems to still be going strong. In fact, I during our last visit, I think I got into a fun conversation with old Tom himself. Tom Thumb is a little bit of an odd duck in it's orientation. Their Bakery (great breads and pies) is in front, followed by a small DQ, and then a hometown restaurant taking up the majority of the property. The menu is a full one and features all sorts of comfort food and some Iowa-specific choices like Pork Tenderloin sandwiches. The food is plentiful, decent, and relatively inexpensive. We ate here Sunday 5/26/2019. Great Double cheese burgers! We each had the double cheese (ordered as the house serves them, only had onions and pickles on the doubles)! Would definitely do the burger again. Some of the family say the burgers kind of reminds them of the long gone Sweezy's in Cherokee, Iowa. We split a half pound side of onion rings. While they were good, they were a bit greasy and the coating kept falling off of them (only 3 stars for these). I give them 5 stars as I am allergic to fish and seafood for this alone, they have a fish fryer and don't cross contaminate fried foods. They bake fresh bakery items, they looked good but didn't try anything. Hidden behind Dairy Queen in the same building. Finally we decided we had to try Tom Thumb burgers because how can a place like this stay in business if it's not good? We did drive through. The menu is expansive with all kinds of options but we started with getting burgers and fries. They did not disappoint. Good quality meat and the bun was buttered and toasted. They have REAL broasted chicken. So good. Love it. This is the only place you can get Dairy Queen in Fort Dodge, so that's pretty amazing as well. I gotta say tho, the hamburgers are a big disappointment. They are super thin like the ones at McDonald's. They taste good tho! So if you're hungry, get the doubles and get a couple. My sister-in-law says that the hot roast beef is her favorite. That's next on my list to try. read more

Was staying in town for a wedding and decided to try this place out since it was so close to the hotel. They definitely need to upgrade the interior design. It's just so old looking. Like another reviewer stated, there is a Dairy Queen attached which was odd but nice to see. I only ordered the chili as everything else didn't seem pleasing to the eyes. My family went to Tom Thumb to try a new family friendly place to eat in Fort Dodge. The food here was amazing, the cheeseburgers were made fresh with homemade buns.
