You really should not miss visiting this place especially at the annual Martyrs Festival weekend held in July.
'In 1834 in the Dorset village of Tolpuddle, farm workers met under an old sycamore tree to organise a Union. Six of them were arrested for taking an "Illegal oath" and were sentanced to 7 years transportation to Australia. They became known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
The fledgling Trade Union movement mounted the first mass protest that won free pardons. From this victory, union's grew and won rights for workers around the world. The fight for justice continues'.
There is a museum that is open all year round, currently due to a flood it is closed so best to call before you travel. 01305 848237. Nearest train station is Dorchester.
The best time to visit is during the Martyrs weekend which is held every year in July when there are stalls, music, beer tents and all round fun for all! You can also camp and shuttle buses run from Dorchester station all weekend, £1 each way.
Tolpuddle is a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year and the museum is a real insight into what conditions farm workers of the day had to endure. A real education.
