I hadn't actually planned…read moreon Toledo as a part of my trip to Spain but decided I wasn't going to make it to Seville this trip, and didn't think I needed the extra days in Madrid. Lucky for me there is a train from Madrid that makes it a very short trip (an hour? less?... it's been about 4.5 years since I visited). My mouth dropped when I entered the station, and after 45 minutes or so taking photos of the interior of the station and a few of the outside I made my way to my hotel. It is a beautiful train station, full stop, with art glass throughout. It's not centuries old, having been built a bit over a century ago; however, it has taken some of the Muslim influence that has so long made Toledo a unique city and incorporated it here as a fine example of Neo-Mudéjar (Moorish Revival) architecture. You don't need to marvel at the place for as long as I did. However, it's worth a few minutes to appreciate the art of the station itself, and the train is so little used in the US (and most stations so disappointingly plain) that this one deserves to be appreciated. It is a small railway station with really only one room, so you won't be sacrificing much time by doing so.

My experience was OK/as expected, but this would be a good activity for kids and/or the elderly. Got a ticket for 6.50 Euros - there's a stand in the middle of a plaza. They'll hand you some headphones (it's an audio tour) and ask that you walk a little up the street to where the train boards from. I don't recall how often the train runs - I'd imagine at least every hour or so. The "train" is your standard tour type of vehicle on wheels (like the ones at amusement parks) and the audio tours come in multiple languages (you plug in your headphones to appropriate language in front of your seat). I had some issues hearing the audio, even with the volume cranked up - had to manually push the headphones against my ear so I could hear better. If you have your own headphones, you might want to try those instead. They drive you around to different points in the town, and there was one pit stop at the top of a hill for you to take pictures (5 to 10 minutes). The entire ride lasted about 40 to 50 minutes. Overall, my experience was as expected - it wasn't the most exciting thing to do as a grown adult, but it's a nice break from walking. It can also allow you to see some sights at the start of your Toledo trip and you can go back and see the ones you liked in detail later.

It feels quite grand for a smaller town like Aranjuez though given the more significant tole of this station during earlier railway development, this makes sense. Today it's well-maintained--the platforms and interior are clean and modern, even the parking lot outside looks fairly recently paved. Arriving from Madrid, it's the southernmost final destination of the C3 Cercanias (local commuter train) line, and takes about 1 hour from Atocha station. Alighting onto one of 3 platforms and several tracks, you'll pass thru automated gates for exit (don't seem to recall needing to scan my ticket here upon exit, though feel free to correct me!) into the main lobby, which feels open, spacious and also incorporates lovely design details such as arched windows, wall columns and inlaid wooden ceilings. In the lobby, there is a railway ticket office and ticket machines from which to purchase tickets. The station also has a cafe, bathroom, other offices within the building, and serves as a bus stop. A sizable parking lot in front which was pretty full on a Sunday afternoon. On a nice day it's an enjoyable 20 minute walk (or 5 minute drive) to the Palacio Real de Aranjuez.

I am reminiscent of the middle ages of Europe. When I was walking on their paths, I felt going back to Middle Ages of Europe. What do you think of their photos of many paths? Toledo is known as the "Imperial City" because it was the main venue of the court of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor in Spain, and as the "City of the Three Cultures" for the cultural influences of Christians, Muslims, and Jews reflected in its history. It was the capital from 542 to 725 AD of the Visigothic kingdom, which followed the fall of the Roman Empire, and the location of historic events such as the Councils of Toledo. The city, seat of a powerful archdiocese for much of its history, has a Gothic Cathedral, the Catedral Primada de España ("The Primate Cathedral of Spain"), and a long history in the production of bladed weapons, which are now common souvenirs of the city.

We arrived in the morning before check-in time, but friendly owner Manolo held our bags for us and delivered them to the room himself so they were waiting for us when we returned later in the afternoon. The room itself had some character. I liked the brick wall behind the bed. I'm sure it was a very historic building. There was a nice rooftop terrace. Price was reasonable. We had a partial view of the cathedral from our room. Cons My wife and I both thought breakfast was weak. It would have been nice to have some fresh fruit and higher-quality juices. The shower was broken. It was the kind of shower where you're supposed to be able to place the hand-held shower head into a holder so that it becomes a fixed overhead shower. But the overhead clip wouldn't hold the showerhead in an upright position. So we had to rest the showerhead on top of the faucets, where it was easy to accidentally switch the temperature between scalding hot and icy cold. Not a fun way to shower. And the shower cubicle itself felt very insubstantial, plastic and cheap. We had a modern LCD TV and a wall-mounted air-con unit, but no remote control for either one. Not a disaster, but pretty annoying on both counts, especially with the A/C since we could only turn it on or off manually and couldn't find a way to adjust the temperature. The old-fashioned door locks are a nice period touch, but they made it kind of hard to open and close doors, particularly the bathroom door, in our hotel room. As in many Spanish hotels, the room is small. There was actually some nice built-in storage for clothing, but the room itself had only two single beds pushed together - no chairs for sitting and relaxing, no desk for working. We were just there overnight, so it was workable, but it would have felt cramped for a longer stay... The view of the cathedral is nice during the day, but the cathedral is not lit at night (not the hotel's fault) so the view isn't nearly as nice at night. I know Spain has a budget crisis and is trying to save money, but I do think it would be nice if they lit the cathedral a little -- at least until 10 p.m. or so. They could even have floodlights switch on for a few minutes every 1/2 hour or something like that if they are trying to save money on electricity. FYI on Toledo -- Nice town for a day-trip or overnight stay from Madrid, but do be aware that it is as hilly as the guidebooks say and that the layout of the city is incredibly confusing. We had pretty good luck finding our way around most of Spain, but we got ridiculously turned around in Toledo, especially when trying to find the monastery where El Greco is buried. Still, if you are a fan of El Greco, Toledo is definitely worth the trip and the cathedral is a work of art in itself.

Most of the historic places are closed, but you get a better sense of the city at night. This Hostal has a great location, next to the Cathedral, but high enough in the city to have a great view of the area. Toledo is a very hilly city, with twisting and tight streets. Its an historical city, with a number of sites. The staff is friendly and helpful to Americans. It is recommended in the Rick Steve's guide book, and we ran into another couple that selected this hostal for the same reason. The hostal has a theme for each floor (Jewish, Christian, and Muslim - since Toledo at one point had all three of these religions in the city at one time), we ended up on the Jewish floor is a themed room - the money changers - not the most PC name. The room had a view of the Cathedral, with a large king size bed, not the best pillows, a small TV and private bathroom. The bathroom had a shower that was smaller than a cruise ship shower, even thought the bathroom was larger room. There is no elevator, but the stairs were manageable. The breakfast was a great value, on the 2nd floor, with a terrace that provided a wonderful view of the city. So for one night, it was a good value, in a historical city.
