This mural is located on a wall of James Whitcomb Riley School 43, right below an elevated playground area. It is a colorful simple design. The mural was painted as part of the 2017 Indy Do Day, a city-wide effort for neighbors to come together to better their hood.
This project was a collaboration between the Butler-Tarkington Neighborhood Association, Butler University, Christian Theological Seminary, Citizen's Energy Group, Crown Hill Cemetery, the International School of Indiana, Midtown Indianapolis Inc., and Newfields.
The mural is rumored to get its title from a Helen Keller quote, "We live by each other and for each other. Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much." I think, however, it is more based on the collaborative effort it took to create the mural.
The mural depicts an upper row of abstract people-like figures with their arms raised in a victory position. There is also a lower row on the same colorful figures with their arms down and giving the appearance as if they are holding hands. The mural has the underling theme of the 3 Rs and you will find the words responsibility, resilience, and respect. along the arms of the first 3 figures on the upper row.
I was on the fence with this mural. I like the use of colors and shapes. It is a simple design, but most community murals are and have to be that way. What pushed me to a four star rating was that this was a community project and was done, by many volunteers, most of whom had no art training, but just had a desire to make their community better.
As with most murals that I have reviewed, this is probably not a very long stop. I was there less than 5 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other wonderful murals in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. read more
