This school is such a pleasure to experience! Even in covid19 conditions! Big shout out to Jeffro for dealing with my partner and I while we attempted to surf. I haven't surfed in over a decade and believe me, it is not like riding a bike. The provide the board and the wetsuits, which is awesome since we're from Alberta and can't lug boards all the way here. It was a simple and easy process. They take you to Cox Beach and work with you for 3 hours. I recommend the private group instead of the big one. We got a lot more attention and direction! Even stood a few times! read more

Visited Sat July 2 group lesson. I browsed online and found this school, and chose them because of their small size and great value. I emailed the owner back and forth a few times, my group was very indecisive on which date/time and Jeffro was able to accommodate us. Pros -Compared to the other schools, they are small and offer a customized personal experience. -I'd recommend getting lessons here if you're first time surfer, they will take the time go through the basics -Don't want to scratch or dirty your car? They transport your surfboard for you to the beach! -They off the best value, and is perfect for students. - An amazing experience with Wes, he took the time to answer our questions and make us feel comfortable Cons -They don't take credit card, when most other places do -Like most other schools require a deposit via paypal prior to the lesson. I don't know of many people that want to put down huge deposits to a business they have never been to. In my case it was going to $210 for 3 people. -They don't offer rentals, there are plenty of other places that offer equipment rentals. -They don't have a way of transporting students from the shop to the beach. I had to rely on another customer to drive me in their car since I didn't have a car. Protip -It's a bit awkward changing in your car after the lesson with no showers, so be prepared for that. Our lesson at Tofino Surf School was amazing! Jordan was our instructor and did a fabulous job of keeping the instruction simple and straightforward so we had lots of time to practice in the water. We weren't bombarded with too much information at the beginning and we were standing by our second try with Jordan's pointers. We were the first group out which meant we had a ton of space to ourselves and I noticed a lot of the other groups spent a super long time on the beach with their instructions, rather than just giving it a go in the water like we did. Just spent the morning learning to surf with Freddie. He was a fantastic teacher. Jeffro was also at the beach. Both are very friendly guys. We were out on the water learning to ride quickly. My wife, 3 adult kids and I all had some great rides on the waves. The morning is less busy at the beach so it felt like we had most of it to ourselves. What a blast! We got a groupon here and had the time of our lives. Our instructor Darren was very entertaining. They borrowed gear big enough for my boyfriend who apparently has bigger feet than they were expecting :) I got some very cool war wounds (my esthetician says I may lose a nail) and it was sooooo fun. I am writing this review with fingertips and knuckles that are still blistered and raw from my experience - but I'm going to review this place through the pain, because it deserves it. I will start by saying that Jeffro is an excellent teacher, the beginner's class was an excellent experience, and that despite the condition of my hands, I very much want to go back again next year. I joined this class through a Groupon. I think that in this case the Groupon was an excellent investment, and I hope it pays off for them - everyone involved was very helpful. Jeffro and the guy manning the front desk the day I joined were especially enthusiastic and both are very good advertisements for the business. We had a class of about 9 people. We began by getting into the water and getting used to the waves without the boards - he brought one board in and showed us a quick couple of demos and went over some safety tips. After a quick session of learning to stand up on the board on the beach, we were all herded in to try our luck. Jeffro, I will say it again, is an excellent teacher. I never felt neglected or forgotten - he was constantly back and forth between us, but he never hovered or got too pushy. He would stop by for a few minutes, assist however he could, possibly even going so far as to get us mounted up and then push from behind to give us an extra good run! - and then he would be on to the next student. I was a lousy student, by the way - I've got no sense of balance and I never did learn the trick of holding my breath without plugging my nose, so I was constantly coming up sputtering - but the nice thing about these lessons is that we were in an area where we were never more than waist-deep and frequently only ankle-deep, so I felt quite safe and secure at all times - if I felt out of control, all I had to do was put my feet down and get my sense of balance back. Other than myself, I believe every student did manage to get some standing runs in, and I believe every one of us found the experience a good one. There was an opportunity to buy photos afterward - they were a bit on the expensive side ($25 for four or about $85 for the whole batch) - however the photographer is working with professional equipment and did get some excellent shots (note that they are JPEG, not RAW), so I felt it wasn't too bad - certainly better than what a friend or family member is likely to get with a regular digital camera or without a good eye for shots or timing. I don't believe he is actually a part of the school but rather works alongside of them (website: http://www.dc-imaging.com/). Also, be forewarned that the photos are displayed and sold directly after the lesson - and as he doesn't have any way to take card payments on site, bring some cash with you if you think you'll want photos (let's face it, you probably will). read more
