    Metzgerei Sedlmayr

Hello Again from Garmisch!…read more My husband and I come twice a year to Garmisch for hiking, biking, and eating! We have ALWAYS purchased our meats from Metzgerei Sedlmayr and this year is no different. The meat selection is awesome, prices are great, and they do speak a little english....but, frankly, I just point at what I want and hold up fingers for how much. So, you aspiring German chefs out there, there is no better place to buy Rolladen meat (already pounded and cut), fresh dill pickles to go with it, bacon (if you like the German Bacon---I do like it, but have to pull out the small bone left in each piece before I use it), and of course Bavarian Mustard, are all sold here. If you always wanted to try your hand at making Sauerbraten, you can purchase pieces of already marinated sauerbraten meat and Sauerbraten gravy mix....Don't forget to ask for a bit of the Sauerbraten marinade to add to your gravy mix....it is excellent :) When there, make sure you check out the selection of dried meat (beef, pork, deer, without or without "gewurz" or spices) jerkies hanging up in the back...yummy! So, as I said, we always buy our meat from Sedlmayr, but this year we also decided to try their lunch specials. What a fantastic way to eat a German lunch and NOT have to pay 50 Euros for two people! The lunch selections change daily (with favorites like weinerschnitzel and "Krustrolle" showing up most days) and are always around the same price 5-6 Euros for a luncheon plate (meat, potatoes/rice)....YES, I did write 5-6 Euros for a German home cooked meal!! You can eat in (tables inside and outside during nice weather) or take out. Portions are midsize, so if you go super hungry order two meats....probably another 1-2 Euros, but well worth it. The meat comes from their butcher shop and the place is SUPER clean. Shopkeepers are actually the Sedlmayr Family (Mom and Daughter mostly). Both are friendly, but I have to say that MOM is my favorite....I just like her whole professional attitude and her knowledge of how to cook the meats that I buy....Daughter speaks more English though and is also very nice. So, be adventurous and give them a try....they are on Alpspitstr (which if you are coming down the hill is the first right after Pizza Hut or if going up the hill is the left at the POST Hotel....Sedlmayr is a block up the street on the right)....park in the public parking lot across the side street from them. I should attach photos, but I seem to always forget to take them as I am savoring the meat selection or eating their great food....I'll take some photos next time I go and post with this review.

Gasthaus am Zierwald - Zart geschmorte Kalbsbäckchen in Spätburgunder mit glasiertem Gemüse und Kartoffel-Kräuterstampf

Gasthaus am Zierwald was very close to our hotel. We had seen it before when walking through town,…read moreand I had read the positive reviews. They don't do this place justice. The complementary starter was a cold mango soup served with a mint leaf garnish, and it was refreshing and delicious. I had "Gebackenes Spinat-Küchlein auf Pfifferlings-Rag oût und glasiertem Gemüse," which was easily one of the best and most creatively put together dishes I have had in a very long time. It was one of at least two vegetarian options for the main course. My dining companion had "Zart geschmorte Kalbsbäckchen in Spätburgunder mit glasiertem Gemüse und Kartoffel-Kräuterstampf," and we shared a green salad. Suffice it to say that every plate was clean by the end of the evening. The server was gracious and patient as we translated the menu and even made suggestions as to which seat would be less windy. As if the food wasn't reason enough to come here, the view of the mountains from the patio is nothing short of awe inspiring. If I'm ever fortunate enough to be back in this area again, I will definitely be revisiting this fine and rare establishment.

Parking was convenient, the location, in relation to the lake and the Zugspitze, was great. The cost was quite reasonable in comparison to other hotels and gasthauses in Germany. But the greatest things about Gasthaus Zierwald were the staff, the room and the food! This place exudes charm - a mix of the old world with a contemporary finish. And CLEAN is a way of life here. The room was not only larger than most, but newly finished in wood by a REAL craftsman. The handmade wood bed was King sized and very comfortable. The bathroom was fantastic - the largest and best we encountered in our travels - no "squeegy" shower here! After a day of sightseeing, there is an upper deck where you could relax with a warm cup of coffee or good German wine and watch the sunset on the Zugspitze. And the food was fantastic - all fresh and well prepared, to be enjoyed in a cozy, warm, but not crowed dining room. The staff were not only polite and efficient, but more than willing to assist you with accommodations, trip planning, local information and fun conversation. I highly recommend Zierwald and we plan a return stay on our next trip to Germany
