I like that on the display tables each pile is by author, so if you like the top book then look deeper in that pile and you will find other books by that same author. Upstairs cafe is worth a trip on a rainy day even if you are not looking for books... good food, excellent wifi and friendly, attentive staff.

Although we walk by this store a lot, we had never set foot in it. Tonight they had a table set up…read morefor a book signing as we've seen large crowds in there before. The books are nicely arranged in narrow aisles to make the most of the space. In the far back is a cafe but it's really a full restaurant. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner. The daily specials are quite reasonably priced. (R$40 for an appetizer, main meal, and dessert). We just stopped by for drinks and a snack. I ordered a lichii and coconut drink which was quite tasty. They even serve it with a spoon so you can fish out the lichii fruit and eat them. The blackberry and maracuja (passion fruit) was actually quite tart so ask for sugar even if you like your fruit drinks to be naturally sweet. The hummus was delicious (I like it better than yalla, which specializes in Mediterranean food) and the pita chips were nicely toasted. Service was friendly and prices reasonable. They had a good variety of coffees and dessert too if you're only look for a short break.

I love the kitchenette for food demos to promote culinary books and the stage for live music or story telling. The children's area had tons of great books, one author we stayed with in São Paulo, who specializes in children's books on dinosaurs. They also have a huge selection of toys, stuffed animals, fluffy backpacks and more. We didn't get a chance to check out the cafe but will try and stop by next time we're in the area, since we heard it was good. Unfortunately we weren't able to find the papeleria even though it's listed in the directory on the maps. But otherwise, it's a very fun bookstore with wide open spaces and plenty of nooks to stop and check out a book.

I was a fan of the one in Sao Paulo, and I am a fan of the one here -- the former movie theater turned bookstore is a great building with a wide array of titles, CDs, movies, kid's section (I'm kind of envious of the cool wooden dragon skeleton - some adults might enjoy chilling in one of those with a book, too! haha....) -- and a cafe on the top floor to give you your caffeine fix to go with your love of books. Drop by! And stick around for a few hours - and be careful how much you might end up spending...

The bookstores in Rio are a lot of fun. They're classy with cafes and restaurants up top and walls…read moreof bookshelves with every topic of books you could want. This one usually has a lot to local events from book signings to music groups. There's always something going on. They also do a good job of rotating then front display and promote new authors and different collections of books. In the front right corner, behind the guard they sell excellent souvenirs; these pop-out tiny replicas of famous Rio landmarks (Maracaná, Pedra de Gávea, Lapa). They also carry some nice photography books although some are older and may need to be updated. They carry a lot of new fashionable books too. Upstairs they have music and DVDs. The listening station allow one to sample the music before purchasing. Scanners around the place allow you to verify prices without having to hunt down an employee. I've always found the ambiance here to be well organized and welcoming.
