We have been to How Hill Nature Reserve many times and do not tire of it's peaceful beautiful. There is free parking next to an open grassy expanse with plenty of space for kids to run around.
Head towards the river and you will pass Toad Hall Cottage, a former reedcutter's cottage that has been turned into a museum. This is free to look round and is realistically furbished to give you an idea of what it must have been like to live and work there. It's fascinating! Outside there is a herb and vegetable garden too.
You can also purchase tickets here to use the nature trail which takes you on a circular route through the marshland landscape, and has a hide on route for you to stop and do a bit of bird spotting.
Back by the river we have also taken a trip on the electric eel' boat which takes you through the reedy waters to areas you can't see by foot. The boatman gave a really interesting and informative talk about the area and the people who used to work there. It's not too long and our children enjoyed the trip.
While there's not masses to do, it's very inexpensive and makes for a low key relaxing morning or afternoon. read more
