It is a museum of Norfolk Life which weaves together a traditional farm, cottage and historic workhouse to tell a tale of how people used to live. Our children love going there and particularly enjoy meeting the animals (Suffolk Punch horses, pigs, goats, rabbits and chickens) as well as trying their hand at milking a cow (simulated not literally!) and filling a bucket with an old-fashioned water pump. The tractor trailer ride around the farm is good fun and the commentary is very informative and interesting. From the farm you can take a lovely riverside walk and also do a spot of pond-dipping. The workhouse is full of fascinating displays and interactive games. Children have the opportunity to dress up in Victorian dress and sometimes the staff and volunteers do re-enactments of life at the workhouse. There is a 1950's room too where for some it will feel like stepping back in time as you sit down with a rag rug at your feet. A fairly new addition is the children's wooden adventure playground with a giant swing and huge long slide. You may not see your children for a good hour or so when they discover this place! There are plenty of picnic spots around the site or the Mardlers Rest cafe does some lovely food. They often have special events on during holiday days. These are good but can get very busy. Craft workshops take place for children on these days too. There is so much to see here that it is doubtful you will be able to do it all in one day. If you live locally it might be worth getting an annual ticket so you can visit as many times as you like. It also gives you entry to all the other Norfolk Museums. Very good value!

You would struggle to make a day of it here and the bulidings are quite old and tired but full of charm. Its just nice to wander around and rumage! You could combine it with a visit to this market town where there are many unusual and independant shops. However, it may not be practical if you have mobility problems as you have to climb a set of stairs in order to enter the museum. The admission is very cheap at £1.75 for kids and £3.50 for adults. When you enter you are greeted by the guide who gives you background information about the history of the Tolhouse and discribes the process of how the court worked in those days. My son particarly enjoyed hearing about the pirates. There are several rooms where the children can do activities which is great fun. At the basement of the Tolhouse is were the cells are kept and you can feel that there is a strange atomosphere down there. I have to amit that me and son only made it half way down the stairs as we were too scared to go into the dunguns.

If you do a combined visit enter through the castle museum as they are linked by a long underground passageway which has sights/ sounds of 2nd World War trenches.This may be abit scary for small children though! There is a range of displays of uniforms through the ages, and lots of information on local regiments etc. On some days they do activities for children, my two boys went home on the bus wearing hats they made! It is free to visit if you have a norfolk museum pass, well worth looking into as it includes enty to the Norwich castle museum, Time and Tide in Yarmouth, and Gressenhall Museum with its large outdoor play area. With children you probably will only need an hour or two for the visit, adults with a special interest may want to stop for longer. No parking, closest car park is in the Castle Mall.

We did have to pick what we were interested in and walk through some displays we weren't necessarily into, but we had plenty of time to enjoy everything on offer. And boy, do they have offerings! Firstly I was impressed by the architecture as you approach the antiquated castle, then by the glass addition on entry which blend both old and new together. We started by walking up to the ramparts to view the city and you continue to see the seamless way they integrated the buildings on the staircases. Then we started at the beginning of the museum and enjoyed the banquet hall where there are hands on displays including fake food and clothing for children....or your inner child ;) Great photo op! There are continued interactive displays throughout the museum to enjoy so keep a lookout. As well as museum displays there are art galleries and although I'm not usually a fan of modern art I was intrigued by some of the artwork using mixed media. The museum really does have something for everyone's interests, military, archaeology, social history, teapot collections, taxidermy in landscapes, every era represented. I hadn't expected to see so many excellent exhibits in a museum this size. Norwich knows how to build a museum! If I ever return I will start my day at the museum and spend more time there.

However, I was defeated by the £6.60 entrance price. No thanks! I did take the opportunity to wander the outside and got a few great pictures. The Castle Green is also a good spot for a picnic lunch. They do have a deal from 4:00 to 5:00 - an hour for a pound, but I couldn't hang around that long.

Although the museum is small, there are things for people of all ages to appreciate, and throughout the year the museum runs activities for both children and adults. The museum is partially housed in some 19th century flintstone buildings, and there is a wonderful display as to what life would have looked like during that period. A life sized model dressed as a traditional fisherman, and various items that would have been used in everyday life, really takes the viewer back in time. This was no grand home, but similar to many fishermen's cottages that still stand dotted around the town which in themselves have added to the quaint character of Cromer. The museum houses archive materials, and anyone interested in seeing old photographs of Cromer may be surprised at the wealth of information available right up to the recent past. Show cases around the museum contain many artifacts from the past, from tools to fossils, and items owned by famous people who were part of Cromer's cultural or working history. One of the main attractions many people visit the museum is to find out more about the East Runton Elephant, the most complete elephant fossil ever to be found in the UK and there are some bones to be seen too. During the month of February the museum usually opens it's doors for free, which is always a good oportunity to become up-dated with anything newly acquired in their displays.
