The restaurant offered an amazing range of food including duck, snow crab, lobster, mud crab, and good vegetarian choices too. Mains are very reasonably priced between $14 and $17. Small range of beers and drinks are available too. We found the food very tasty, good portion size, and served VERY QUICKLY for such a packed restaurant. Given that I come from NZ, where the dim sum quality is off the scale if you know where to go, Gold Leaf fell well short in terms of delicacy of flavours and textures. That's not to say that they're still possibly one of the best I've encountered in Melbourne, but it's a bit of a statement about the standard you expect in this city. This is a large space, with rotating chandeliers and large tables, and a bit of coolness in the food is to be expected at a yum cha sitting. In the couple of instances I've eaten here (one of them the meeting of my own and my partner's parents for the first time) the food has been largely cold and disappointingly lacking in flavour. The reality is, though, I feel like the culture surrounding yum cha in Melbourne is really just undemanding. There aren't any quality yum cha restaurants here (I've tried most of them) and my gripes are no different in the higher end restaurants. One older female staff member was incredibly rude to us. The younger female staff member didn't know the word "please" existed and there were two young male staff members who were doing nothing but standing around staring at us and talking about us to each other the whole time we were there. To me it's the best dumpling place in the area with a reasonable selection of dumplings, meat and vegetarian options, this place has something for everyone. Favourites include the shao long Bao, and the fried eggplant pie with pork filling. It's something a bit different but worth a try. If you're a local looking for good inexpensive dinner or you are after a quick bite after shopping at the factory outlets, this is the place to go for a good feed at a very reasonable price.
