New Orleans magazine lets you know what's going on in the city and has great back stories. Their calendar is pretty cool (HATE when stuff has already happened by the time I get my issue). They have a little bit of something for everyone: politics, cooking, drinking, culture, local characters, and oddly the WYES listings.

I will never forget the cover of New Orleans Magazine for the December 2005 issue (pretty sure…read morethat's the correct date). This was immediately post-storm, and the cover was of a beautifully set dining table for Christmas dinner, something you'd expect to see at a very wealthy home uptown. The food? MREs. It so perfectly captured the surreal nature of living here at that point in time, I need to get my hands on a back issue. Today I bought the current issue of New Orleans Magazine, and so far I've read the editor's letter and an article about the NOPD's residency rule. Both were excellent. I can't wait to read about the 40 visual art "sites worth seeing" and the dining news. I've found the magazine to be written by people who really know the city's culture and history, and I've learned a lot. Definitely worth reading, if you're a magazine person.

I totally support the US Post Office. I've never had bad service here…read more Nothing bad to say about this branch other than it's too bad the lobby isn't more inviting. We love our USPS. the Govt. is trying to kill it. It's simply what makes this country connected. I can't imagine life in the US without it. Bravo to these Postal Workers.

The on-line club listings and who is playing is invaluable, while in town. I know a little about some of the entertainers who are featured in the articles, so OffBeat is a way to learn more. Surely people must've forgotten about them in 90 days. Wait, you in the back. What'd you say? A fluff piece about the legacy of Louis Armstrong? Brilliant! Give this guy a promotion. Who would've thought?! Hey, has anyone been out to any small clubs recently to see what the scene looks like? No? Then how are we going to know what's current in New Orleans music? Oh, by reading our own magazine, you say? Right, I knew that! Great job! Okay, then it's settled. Let's throw something together on Rebirth Brass Band, and put another fluffer on Louis Armstrong on the docket. Wait, what'd you say over there? Something about a band that hasn't been around for 20 years or more? Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that. Well, okay, but only as long as they play music that sounds like it was made more than 20 years ago. Oh, they play traditional jazz in the style of Dave Bartholomew, you say? Great, then let's do it!

I found the read interesting and the advertising helpful. Of course, this is the Halloween edition and is there any city more pro-Halloween than New Orleans? So my job being in the marine industry, and from time to time, working with boats, boats need…read moredocumentation for USCG inspections or for traveling the area and this business has it covered. It is a small family owned business, tho I understand it looks only small, but there is offices worldwide. The owner and well versed staff are super friendly and helpful in providing hard to find publications like a US Waters Light List 4 or Navigable Waters text books. ANY kind of map and flags are on stock or can get printed while you wait. They also sell surveying equipment like plumb bobs and salinity equipment to do dead weight surveys on equipment. They ship anywhere fast and can meet you halfway if you are on a serious rush. The appearance of the store/office is somewhat overwhelming. Im talking charts and books stacked to the ceiling!! Almost every inch of the building is packed with books! Thankfully these guys know where everything is and very rarely have I come here and they didn't have the latest version of whatever I was needing at the time. Like maybe 1 in 150 times I had to wait. It is really hard to describe this place if you do not need it, but if you need marine charts, maps, publications, flags and the like, contact Erik or Brian or Joe and they will hook you up!!
