I first heard of this publication from reading "Creole New Orleans Race and Americanization", which documents the papers influence during the Civl War and Reconstruction years. Today, the The Trib helps me to stay current with the Creole movers and shakers of New Orleans, through it's feature stories and editorials.

Surely people must've forgotten about them in 90 days. Wait, you in the back. What'd you say? A fluff piece about the legacy of Louis Armstrong? Brilliant! Give this guy a promotion. Who would've thought?! Hey, has anyone been out to any small clubs recently to see what the scene looks like? No? Then how are we going to know what's current in New Orleans music? Oh, by reading our own magazine, you say? Right, I knew that! Great job! Okay, then it's settled. Let's throw something together on Rebirth Brass Band, and put another fluffer on Louis Armstrong on the docket. Wait, what'd you say over there? Something about a band that hasn't been around for 20 years or more? Hmmm, I hadn't thought of that. Well, okay, but only as long as they play music that sounds like it was made more than 20 years ago. Oh, they play traditional jazz in the style of Dave Bartholomew, you say? Great, then let's do it!

New Orleans magazine lets you know what's going on in the city and has great back stories. Their calendar is pretty cool (HATE when stuff has already happened by the time I get my issue). They have a little bit of something for everyone: politics, cooking, drinking, culture, local characters, and oddly the WYES listings.

I will never forget the cover of New Orleans Magazine for the December 2005 issue (pretty sure…read morethat's the correct date). This was immediately post-storm, and the cover was of a beautifully set dining table for Christmas dinner, something you'd expect to see at a very wealthy home uptown. The food? MREs. It so perfectly captured the surreal nature of living here at that point in time, I need to get my hands on a back issue. Today I bought the current issue of New Orleans Magazine, and so far I've read the editor's letter and an article about the NOPD's residency rule. Both were excellent. I can't wait to read about the 40 visual art "sites worth seeing" and the dining news. I've found the magazine to be written by people who really know the city's culture and history, and I've learned a lot. Definitely worth reading, if you're a magazine person.

Some of the articles are about stuff you know (like McKenzie's buttermilk drops available at Tastee's) but other stuff is definitely new (at least to me). The writing has been pretty good to excellent, the stories engaging and the photos gorgeous. It is part of the Edible communities publications.

The Gambit covers restaurants, hotels, entertainment in the area, upcoming events & even manages to get a news story or two in. Loved that it's STILL in print. While I do love technology, still being a paper product, I am able to peruse sections, make circles & x's to help with decision making. Additionally, the Gambit is not just a resource for the locals, but also anyone visiting, because as stated, it covers all-things-NOLA. I also love the Gambit contests that are featured on the net & in print. Hello, let's talk about winning tickets to local events... Did you hear me say WIN?!?! As in FREE!!! Yesssssss!!!! The print version offers lots of nice ads, from whence I get many GREAT shopping/gift ideas. Ohhhhhhhh & I forgot to mention, the GAMBIT is printed frequently and is FREE!!!! The Gambit has changed a lot from when I was in grad school but it still retains a lot of helpful information for out of town visitors that you aren't necessarily going to get from your Yelp application. Current schedules for clubs, articles about musicians and lists of restaurants - in much more of an "At A Glance" format which you can manipulate to your needs (ie, tear and fold, write upon, etc) - is always very useful. Tons of great information - if you're a visitor, make sure you pick up a copy of the Gambit and leave the other stacks of formulaic tourist brochures in the rack!

When you call Customer Service (sic) you are told how valuable you are and wait for the next Customer Service - like clockwork, they cut you off at 6 minutes. Imagine how much the folks who work at Disney really hate their jobs. Yeah, its fun the first day,…read moreweek or even month, but after the ten millionth time of hearing small world, they're either going to pick up an assault rifle or jump off of a bridge. So the Quarter Rat is the service industry rag for those who work in the French Quarter. And much like the Disney employee who deals with adorable kids, these folks deal with drunken, perverted adults who are trying to re-live their days in the fraternity/sorority. To get an idea of how much they hate their jobs, and why, this is what you must read. Its as bizarre as a Mad Magazine, but a commentary on humanity. The accounts of employees are hilarious, extremely politically incorrect, and often disgusting, a must read for anyone venturing into the FQ or wondering what Rome was like, just before it fell.
