On the way to find a late lunch in town, we walked past this place ..... and then immediately…read moreturned around and went inside. The reason? A sign I could not resist: "CHOCOLATE COVERED BUTTER TARTS." Yes please. Inside, it's a very charming chocolate shop, with a lot of different creations. They've got shelves and pretty displays of candy, a large quantity of fudge (which actually seems to be one of their specialities, they offer free samples) and then a lot of truffles and other chocolate covered things. So, we picked up a couple of chocolate covered tarts. They have a variety of tarts and coverings. I had a plain tart with a salted caramel chocolate covering, and Lee had a plain chocolate and butter tart. One minus is the checkout is a little chaotic. There were a group of kids waiting, and it was a little confusing who was serving who, but we got it all sorted out. Later, we had these for dessert. Chocolate covered was a little bit of a misnomer. They're more chocolate topped, and the chocolate, while tasty, was a thick disc covering the top, which made it a little awkward to eat. I ended up just eating the disc separately. However, it was delicious, and that awkwardness shouldn't dissuade you from giving this place a try.

As with most small Ontario towns, there is naturally a Timmy's in Durham (pop. 2500). But before I…read morestopped there, I was thrilled to find Garafraxa, a cute little independent place that seems to have coffee shop/bistro/entertainment venue all wrapped into one. I stopped in for a tea, and was pleased to be offered a loose-leaf cream earl grey. The cranberry and pistachio biscotti was very fresh and a perfect pair for the tea... So yummy. I should note, I never ask for soy milk in small towns (was laughed at one too many times in the past), but a gentleman that came in after me (looked even more "out of town" than I did ;) asked for it... And the women serving, proudly announced she did have soy milk. Impressive. Wish I had some friends up here (hehe) - this place seems like a perfect Saturday night venue to grab a glass of wine and listen to live music :)

I was also happy to see cafe tables and chairs outside. It was a hot day and I needed a place to sit with my dog. Stepped inside and again was impressed with the look of the place, especially the stage. At the back of the room was a stage, stage lighting and a large screen. I didn't realize Garafraxa's is also a music venue. Looks like an excellent spot for musicians to pump up their performance. The espresso prices were Starbucks expensive, but my latte was quite large. The spinach pastry I ordered is the mass-produced pastries I've seen and eaten in other shops around Ontario. I would have preferred a little something savoury that was locally made.

We were in Tobermory for 3 days and went to the Hungry hiker twice for lunch because it was just that good! We ordered the Thanksgiving special called the "Gobbler" - consisting of smoked turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy and homemade stuffing. Perfect for a crisp fall day! I believe their most popular item is the beef brisket sandwich which was also delicious! It's a messy sandwich but it's amazing. I also tried one of their breakfast sandwiches which had a healthy amount of fried eggs, bacon and cheese on a brioche bun. Absolutely hit the spot. Lastly, their Dilly Tots were *chef's kiss*. Perfectly crispy out the outside, and fluffy on the inside. Loaded with dill to season with a sour cream dill sauce on the side. The only "downside" is that there is only outdoor seating. While it isn't the most comfortable, its part of the vibe. It probably isn't a big deal in the summer but for a chillier day, many people were eating inside their car.

Ambiance: This is a cute food truck located in the back of the owner's home lot, if you're lucky…read moreyou'll get to see the owner's dog Annie in her backyard pen. This place is a solid option since they have a covered patio section for bad weather, a small playground for energetic kids, and dog water bowl for furry kids. There is a single port-a-potty if you need as well. The owner is super friendly and food comes out in a reasonable amount of time considering it's usually just one guy cooking. Food: Believer - Packed with 2-3 large eggs, bell pepper, bacon, sriracha mayo, and served with a brioche bun. It's a hearty breakfast sandwich with just enough zip to keep things interesting 4.5/5 Western - A classic egg sandwich with cheese and a smidge of ham. It's plainer than the Believer but larger and more filling. 3/5 Reuben - Pretty legit with buttered rye bread crisped on the griddle. The corned beef is warmed evenly and tender. You may want to request extra sauerkraut if you're a lover of it but it comes with a reasonable amount normally. They also serve it with a side of homemade honey mustard which is an interesting twist. This is a bit greasy but probably my favorite 5/5 Yeti - This is a seriously crunchy and juicy chicken breast sandwich. The sauce is kind of a sweet heat bbq sauce which is very tasty. It is topped with a tasty and mild coleslaw which brightens things up. A bit small to be a full meal but dang good l, my second favorite 5/5 Overall the 4.5 star rating here is well justified. The menu is extensive for a food truck and they're genuinely making fresh gourmet food. It's honestly one of the best places in Tobermory and out-competes the actual sit-down restaurants. Would highly recommend giving this place a try.
