Used to be one of the best places to get a nice curry, but now they are below average. Shame.

In a town where there are so many curry houses of varying degrees of quality, Cellars has been a…read moreconsistently good choice for many years now. Cellars is based on Lower High Street and takes its name from the fact that most of the seating is down in the cellar of the building. There were 9 of us in our party last night and this worked really well as we had a whole little alcove to ourselves, however it can be a little too intimate when several smaller parties are put in the same area. The menu is full of your standard curry house choices plus some special dishes. We shared poppadoms and dips to start before moving on to main courses. My king prawn pathia with pilau rice was delicious, really flavourful without being too spicy. Service was attentive and our food and drinks all arrived quickly. The bill came to £16 each including a tip and we all left saying that we'd really enjoyed our meal. I'm sure it won't be long before I'm back!

Though the waiters weren't necessarily attentive 100% of the time, when they realised we required something, they were more than happy to get whatever we needed straight away. We were offered drinks immediately, which arrived within a minute and then popadoms with dips were brought for us to fill the hunger gap before our starters arrived. Only two of us ordered starters, but there was plenty to go around! Mains arrived quickly and the waiters offered to serve the food for us. Lovely, traditional dishes, bustling atmosphere and not too badly priced either. Negatives - The bill was a little slow to arrive, but the place was heaving by that point, so we gave them the benefit of the doubt. Also, our table was facing the corridor leading into the main area, which made those of us sitting opposite feel a bit uncomfortable with our backs to the entirity of the restaurant! A lovely evening all in all though and would definitely visit again.

Better known to regulars, as Blakey's Eastern Promise. This…read moreis by far the best Balti I have ever been to. There are around 10 Balti restaurants closer to our home but the journey is well worth it. The owner is a master at 'customer care' and really wants you to enjoy his food. You start your meal with complimentary papadums with pickles. Starters are many but my favourite is Tandoori mixed grill. For first timers, I would strongly recommend you asking to speak to the owner, who will be glad to spend time with you, discussing what dishes meet with your taste. He will go out of his way to meet your requirements and is quite prepared to move away from the menu by 'adding or taking away' ingredients. It is common for him to offer you a visit to his kitchens where he is proud to introduce you to the chefs and show you the food being prepared. (He is very very busy on Friday and Saturday nights and cannot spare as much time as a week night) There is a great selection of main courses but ask about the specials. If you are someone who enjoys taste, flavour, authenticity and you take a little time, you will love this restaurant !! The main is followed by complimentary coffees. My wife and I are regular visitors and book in advance to secure ourselves a booth (for privacy and intamacy). We have a great meal, we leave full, content and the bill is less than a three course meal for one in most retaurants.

To start we had the mix started which was lamb chicken tikka and shish kebab. The only bad but was the lamb was abit tough. Always found that wherever I have had this starter the rest was lovely. For main I had a chicken balti which was really nice . Partner had a pathia said one the best he has had. Overall good restaurant friendly staff and good food. Only reason don't get five stars just not a child friendly place, the only thing you can get for kids is chicken nuggets and chips. Will be visting again soon.

It is very eighties nouveau-flash-trash, with black and red leather, neon lighting and artworks of questionable taste. There are glass tables and mirrored walls. I always find myself distracted by the indoor fishpond. The food is really good, apparently the chef used to work for Indian royalty. I love the King Prawn Puree to start and the Chicken Tikka Dansak is reliably delicious. The Alachi is licensed, which makes a welcome change to some of the other local curry houses. The Alachi really go all out, pitching themselves a cut above the standard curry house. They have monthly themed evenings with live music and you can even hire their private limo for transport to and from the restaurant. Take-away is also available.
