Sand just sitting behind the vas when we checked in

Filthy! My family and I had a bad cough from all the mold in the rooms. Walked in and it looked like this place had not been cleaned at all. Sand everywhere, mold covered by paint and filthy bathroom floors. Kitchen items were disgusting as pictured and the provided sponge to wash dishes smelled like mold and had pieces of rotten food on it. This place needs to be checked by code enforcement and we are concerned!

This was our second trip to the Thunderbird Beach Resort. The first was in 2018 and we returned for another stay at the end of May 2021. What we love most about the Thunderbird is that it is an old motel (1950s?) that has been completely refurbished but kept its charm in the process. From the moment you pull in to the Thunderbird, you can't help but see the massive neon sign right out of 1950! The motel is 3 floors in a u-shape that faces toward the beach. In the 'U' are beautiful grounds lush with palms and tropical plantings and of course, a swimming pool. There is a small poolside hut that serves as a bar and a seating area/patio that lines the boardwalk where live music plays daily starting in the afternoon and going into the evening around 8 or 9 pm. We noticed on our last visit that there seems to be quite a following. Guests seem to know each other - possibly meeting here at the same time each year to relive memories? We like the outdoor entrances to the rooms and each has two chairs and a little table to sit in the breezeway overlooking the pool so you can listen to live music and see the action. There were quite a few seniors dancing to some old tunes being played. They were too cute. I won't lie, we were very entertained when a lady in her 60s got a little too close to the pool, drank a little too much and took an unexpected dip to cool off. She was fine and laughed it off. Never a dull moment! The rooms are clean and comfortable and we love the little kitchen with the 2-seat dinette that folds down from the wall. It is just enough to do what you need to do to make meals in room. There is a small fridge, microwave, 2-burner stove and oven. The sink area is stocked with a small bottle of soap, two dish cloths, dish towels and then basic pots/pans/flatware/plates/cups, etc. There is also a toaster and coffee maker. The Publix market is within walking distance a block away. Beach towels are provided and the beach is steps away. This area of Treasure Island has an extremely wide beach so be prepared for your walk to the water. We liked that there were a couple of cabana companies on this stretch of the beach. We rented one for $30 for the day which included 4 lawn chairs and the big yellow adjustable dome cabana. Well worth the money...Florida sun is intense, even in May! Surf Style is directly across the street from the motel if you need anything beach related. But...might I recommend going a little north of Surf Style, just 1/2 a block to the little mom and pop beach store, 'Pirate's Cove' that carries beach toys, hats, shirts, etc. for less than the Surf Style corporation?! The paved boardwalk runs between the hotels and the beach. Its a great walk in the early morning with lots of walkers, runners, bikes and maybe even a skater. Be sure when you book your room that you designate ground floor or 2nd floor or beach view, etc. Last visit, we were ground floor at the pool. Was great for my swimming kids. This visit we were on the 2nd floor overlooking the pool, the entertainment and were able to see the beach. We liked this better. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a smaller establishment to stay in vs. a high rise condo or hotel.

OK - RESORT FEE. Just got hit - 35 PER PERSON per day. Never staying here after again - the fee makes it same price as nice, quiet condo or a better quality hotel. Lost a star for that.

Thunderbird is located at the perfect location if you are wanting to stay on the beach and still have quick access to downtown St. Petersburg. We spent 5 nights here in early October and thoroughly enjoyed the stay. The price was very reasonable since this is an older but well maintained property. Clean and comfy rooms, pool, tiki bar, attached Italian restaurant, free parking, and on the beach! My only complaint is that it can be loud. The acoustics are terrible and the music and party noises from the bar and pool echo up from the courtyard.

We stayed here because we booked spring break late and this was one of the only vacancies. Pros On the beach. Yes, it's a long walk to the water but that's fine with me. I'm still on the beach. Staff is very friendly. My room has a kitchenette. Dated but everything works. My room is clean. Air conditioner works well. The grounds are pretty. They have a pool and hot tub (which I didn't use), a bar, daily live entertainment, and towel service. Cons They have had to turn the water off for a period of time for the last two days. There are ants in my kitchenette. I'll take ants because I met another guest who said she had to move rooms because of a cockroach infestation. And I mean those big bad boys - palmettos. The beds are not great. I can feel the springs but, as another reviewer wrote, I am not sore in the morning. Pillows are pretty lumpy.

My nephew and now niece got married there this weekend it was the best time ever. Clyde and his staff were amazing from the bartenders to the servers to the wedding people they were amazing everyone had a wonderful time they came from outside of Orlando my husband and I live down here and it was great great wedding destination brunch was fabulous this morning dinner was awesome last night wedding was perfect couldn't have asked for a better venue thank you to the whole staff at Bilmar

Is it old? Yes. Is it iconic? Yes. Is it little kitschy old Floridan. Yes. Yes. But the best yes I'd that it's a good deal, especially for us local Floridian-Tamanians. Good enough pool for the kids. Short access to the beach. Good dining (although not that cheap) but great bar service! The kid that gets you drunk with your kids in the pool. Speaking for a friend.

All the pavers around the pool have mold and black dirt and food that no one picks up.

Never will I stay there again!!! I have been going to the Thunderbird for 15 years and this was by far the worst stay ever. Let's start off with the front desk being very unprofessional and Ghetto as hell! The hotel has definitely gone down hill. Rooms are dirty and the pool was disgusting. No maintenance what's so ever. My room had ants and no one did anything about it other then they told me I can go to the office for bug spray and do it myself. The property was so dirty it makes me sad to see this place go so down hill. The bartenders were great no complaint there.

Excellent Property, entertainment and bar right-on the board walk, small but excellent dining cafe! Right on sunset beach that's Internationally known for sand sculpture, starting on Thanksgiving.

This is the dirt that was on the sheets! They dont change their sheets!
    Nicole R.

Absolutely the worst hotel. Sheets were dirty and full of sand! When I called the front desk Bradly told us we cam come get new sheets and change them ourselves. The sheets we were given were also dirty and all he could say was we can speak to a manger tomorrow and there was nothing else he could do. We were then told by the security guard that maybe we need to go to a better hotel, like a five star one if we want cleaner sheets. We then made the decision to pack up and drive 2 hrs back home. They are dirty and dont care about their customers. We were also told the manager will tell us the same thing he did...

When I say this hotel is right on the beach, I am not exaggerating. It is RIGHT on the beach, with a private access through the pool and patio area. It was quiet, clean, and the view was absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed walking right out onto the beach, and the beach was not busy at all! We were able to find a sand dollar and some shells. The room was clean and comfortable. The front desk team was very friendly, and the lady who checked us in offered us a top floor with a great view. I would 1000% stay here again!

We had a warm welcome from Kayla at the front desk and a very efficient and informative check-in. Really nice smile and genuine hospitality. If you are in a studio, one bedroom, or two bedroom, you have one car pass for the group. If you have a three bedroom, then you can receive two car passes. Due to its small footprint, parking is limited but sufficient. And the room was absolutely spotlessly clean, very well equipped, and everything was in working order. Very comfortable and a cool respite from the unrelentless sun. When leaving the unit, it is recommended to always draw the blackouts to help conserve the energy and the AC's function. You'll be glad you did. We did not get a chance to utilize the pool, but it looked like it was being put to good use with lots of happy people. It was easy to walk out to the beach so we utilized the beach every day of our stay. The hotel is easily walkable to John's pass Village and all the restaurants and shops there. The breakfast served each morning was fresh and tasty and always well-attended by the hotel guests. I would recommend getting there earlier versus later to avoid the crowds (7-10 AM). In addition to Kayla, Gavin was quite friendly and helpful at the front desk. All around, the the associates we encountered in any of the areas of the resort were engaged and interactive with the customers. Quite a guest-centric team. Remember to take your room key with you anytime departing your unit as it is required to enter both the beachside building as well as the front desk/lobby building. A 10 out of 10 stay!!!

We were excited to discover that the hotel is just a short walk away from one of our favorite beaches, Upham beach, which made the trip even more special. The property had a fun South Beach feel with plenty of seating to socialize, a cute pool with bright flamingo floats, a hot tub, and a great outdoor pool bar. Natalia was a great bartender, she was friendly and gave the most awesome recommendations off the menu. She did not miss a beat! Randy was a fantastic host. He was in communication via text as soon as the room was ready and greeted us immediately as we arrived on the property which does not require you to check in as they send you your room number and code to get in. Unfortunately, the noise level significantly impacted our stay. We were in Room 28, and directly behind the room is a hallway used by staff from the upstairs bar. Throughout the first night, we heard a heavy door repeatedly slamming and staff using rolling carts to transport trash. The noise continued until about 3:00 a.m., making it very difficult to sleep. The next morning, I expressed my concerns to the front desk. He was polite, apologized, and said he would pass the information along. However, the noise resumed again the following night. Around 11:30 p.m., I stepped into the hallway and observed someone pulling trash on one of the carts; they did not appear interested in engaging when I tried to address it. Closer to midnight, after another loud door slam, I spoke with a different staff member who was very receptive and respectful. After that conversation, the noise level did decrease. I understand that hotel operations continue behind the scenes, but for a property positioned as an upscale boutique experience, I would expect better late-night noise control -- especially in rooms directly adjacent to service areas. The hotel has a lot of potential, and the cleanliness was excellent. However, due to the repeated overnight noise disruption, I would be hesitant to stay in that location of the property again.

After staying here, I just cannot understand how this Hotel got good ratings. You can see the pics below to see what we stayed in. Upon arrival, there was bacon on the counter, the stove was NEVER cleaned. The toilet had brown crude inside and brown drips out. The fire sprinkler, overhead, was filled with gunk and dust...hopefully it would work if need be. The door to get out onto the balcony constantly stuck and I had to muscle the heck out of it to get it to open. The toaster was filthy & there were dead bugs on the ceiling. I tried to book elsewhere, but everything was full. I tried to relax, but could not because I knew what was around me. The sheets were clean and the bed was comfortable...and I stayed out of the room all of the time. He replaced the coffee pot with one that was covered in dust and dirt...I didn't use it. Did anyone EVER teach these people how to clean. The pics prove to me that they do not care about the rooms. There were many more things than presented here, dust on everthing, carpets not vacuumed - - but I just cannot waste anymore time on this. There's hardly a lobby, just a small front desk but if you have a car you park under the building and walk in through the back. It feels very wrong and is definitely an odd setup. However, the hotel is very clean and well-kept overall. The room was nice, if not setup a bit strangely as we had a 2-bed suite that had the longest hallway I've ever seen in a hotel, just to get to the kitchen. The view on the balcony is incredible, of course, but I wasn't overly impressed otherwise. They have a pool but it's pretty small and gets crowded fast. If you don't get seats at the pool early in the morning you might not be able to find some later, especially if you stay over a weekend. There is a private access path to the beach but I clocked that it is at least .3 miles from the hotel to the beach- you walk far less just parking at public access. They have a small bar where you can get select drinks and a few food items. But it's not much- you are relatively on your own in that regard otherwise. The rooms do have a kitchen but I know the majority of people don't want to cook while on vacation. You also can't really ask for a variety of drinks from the bar- we asked for one not on the menu and one sweet bartender was going to help us figure it out until her manager, a blonde lady, made a huge fuss over it not being on the menu. It was very unsavory how she acted and even other guests at the bar during my that time noticed how uncomfortable it was. This woman was also just not real friendly working at the front desk while we were there either. The maintenance guys were great and keep everything in great shape- mopping the pool area every morning, making sure the path is nailed down and everything is in order. They are also very strict about parking- each room gets one car to park onsite and they send emails pit about it nearly every night. It seems really inefficient and like there has to be a better way to system that. Overall we had a good stay but I don't think I'd come back.
