I took the Open Water certification course at Thunder Reef, and the instructors were excellent! They did a great job of teaching the coursework and thoroughly reviewing the skills in the pool. I really appreciated that at the end of the course, they set up all of the certification dives for you, so that you can immediately get certified at the end of the course. Sometimes dive courses don't do that, and it leaves you having to figure out where you're going to dive to become officially certified. Thunder Reef lined up multiple options for dates to complete the dives, as well as affordable hotel options. All of the staff really go the extra mile, and I could not recommend Jen and the whole team enough. :) I left the course feeling confident and excited to explore the world of diving! read more

I'm very new to diving, so I'll be brief. We took a private class and it was very comfortable, non-pressuring, and in the end, an incredible experience. I admit I was a bit nervous before taking the class, as I've never used anything more than a snorkel underwater, but Jeff did a great job in easing my nerves. I'd highly recommend Thunder Reef to anyone new to the diving scene. I know we'll be returning here and I hope to soon get certified as well. Just completed Naui Open Water Dive class with Chastity. This shop goes above and beyond to ensure safety and complete understanding of skills needed to become a scuba diver. Equipment is in excellent shape and working order. Chastity and Kim recognize not everyone learns in the same way and are great at customizing instruction to ensure each person can complete the required skills. Thunder Reef is the dive shop I use. I have been going there for years. I have never had a bad experience. Jen the manager is great. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have nitrox fills at reasonable prices. This shop has been around since the early 1980s. They have a real inventory with most anything you need. They also have an on site pool. Making them a great place to practice your skills or get a refresher before your next tropical vacation. read more

Ok first off, a disclaimer... I did not speak directly with Thunder Reef Divers. My reg was "serviced" by them through a shop in Portland, NW Scuba. So some of the problems I experienced are likely a result of poor communication between the shops, and not the fault of the people at Thunder Reef. However, regardless of communication problems, what occurred is that my reg came back to me with pieces missing that had not been broken to begin with (parts for screwing the first stage onto the tank). Also, the reg failed (only a blown o-ring but still...) after only 18 dives, and the depth gauge was reading 10 bar low. I have no idea what Thunder Reef charged but NW Scuba charged me $250, which was (WAY) more than I had expected to pay (kits are available on ebay for $40-70 depending on what you need to service, and you can send your reg to the UK for about $100 or $125, not including shipping). So it is very possible that if I had gone direct through Thunder Reef that I would have paid a lot less; I wish I had gone direct but I did not realize that NW Scuba would be outsourcing the servicing until I was already at their shop. In any case, I was incredibly dissatisfied with the "service job" that my reg received. I had to get the reg serviced again in the Philippines when it failed after only 18 dives (which only cost me $36 for a full overhaul so I wish I had just waited and done it there) so I just want to save others from wasting money getting their gear serviced here. They might be great for courses- no idea. read more

I was looking for a new dive shop after the previous one closed. These folks are everything I could ask for: professional, courteous, honest and knowledgeable. They charged a fair price for the work I needed done (regulator service and battery replacement for a dive watch), and got the work done by the date promised. I have found my new dive shop. I've tried other dive shops closer to home (Portland), and Thunder Reef is well worth the drive. read more

The staff also are extremely helpful and informative when you are buying gear. What a great place! I took the Open Water Scuba course through Clark College who uses Thunder Reef. Thunder Reef instructors are phenomenal! I would highly, highly recommend this dive shop! I've been going to Thunder Reef since 2008. It's the original shop that I certified with, and I had such a great experience I saw no reason to ever go anywhere else. The same is true all these years later. If I need something, I just ask Jen and I get knowledgable, honest information. This shop is a real class act and I would never go anywhere else. My husband and I tried a different dive shop for our Discover Scuba class before we discovered Thunder Reef. I was underwhelmed with that experience and decided to see if there was another shop in Vancouver. I'm so glad I found Thunder Reef. We did our pool time and classroom time with George and another guy, whose name I can't remember. Both guys were great! Jen was very helpful getting us set up with masks and snorkels. We were certified in Hawaii last March. Last week we did our first cold water dive with Bandito Charters. Jen was our dive master. She was so encouraging and patient with us. My husband chose to sit out the second dive, since he was too cold. I am so glad I went back in the water for my second dive. After a few adjustments with my gear, thank you Jen, I had a much better experience. So much fun! I can't say enough good things about these folks. Try them, you won't be disappointed! read more
