This is an absolutely top notch place! They really know how to let people have a great hassle-free weekend. Skydiving with Cleve and Owen is always guaranteed to be a good time, but the white water rafting is where the true fun really is. They don't provide much in the sense of amenities, but you don't need it. Private camp sites, full bar, volleyball pit, and nightly bonfires provide fun when not participating in activities. You are guaranteed to find people to stay up late with and drink. I've been twice already and can't wait to book it for a third trip. read more

I thought this place was pretty stellar. We stayed 3 nights and only white water grafted. Pur guide was great, the all inclusive package which was around 250 each included 5 meals. For my 500th - I'd like to dedicate my review to my TRW family! If you know me, you'd know that I've fallen in love with whitewater rafting, but not only that, but I also fell in love with Three Rivers' Penobscot Outpost in Millinocket! I'll review the rivers individually later. But for now, I'm going to focus on the facility here. If you've been to the Forks location, you'll find that this facility is a little different in that instead of an open field for camping, there are individual camp sites. Most of the sites you'll have an out-house instead of a bathing house that you can go to. Be sure to bring your own TP! If not, you'll have to continually walk back to the main bathroom with actual plumbing in their main building. OR if you're like me, I just use the wilderness that we have available, it's called the woods/trees! Each site has a fire ring along with a picnic table. And if you can afford it, they also have yurts, bunk houses, and platform cabin tents available. Yurts have plumbing in that you get a shower and a flushing toilet. I also believe the bunk houses have this option as well. I absolutely love this facility for some reason. Might be the atmosphere. Might be the fact that I'm in love with the P'nob. Might be the fact that the staff here are AMAZING folks! They are seriously the most accommodating people I've ever met. We had a group of 4 that came up for the first time. The second time, we had a group of 16. And let me tell you, getting 16 people into a camp site is not easy, when your facility is already booked to capacity, but Tony and his crew did it! They gave us an amazingly huge site to fit all our tents and cars! Seriously, always a great time! And even better if you hit up a theme night. They have Formal Friday Karaoke nights, Saturday Skirt Nights, and I believe Tuesday Taco, Wednesday Wing (?) nights. The bathrooms are immaculately clean, I know they clean it at least 3 times a day, I know this because I've seen this! The only thing I would have them change if they could, is probably put up a privacy wall between the stalls and the showers. If that door swings open, pretty much anyone that walks by can see you change after you get out of the shower. Other than that, I have to say I seriously like that their retail store is literally adjacent to the bar/restaurant, and that you have to enter through there in order to get to the restrooms and bar/restaurant. It kind of just brings all of it together. The best part of the Three Rivers experience though are the guides. The guides are what makes TRW the best company to raft with. I've been rafting with TRW for about 4 years now and have never been disappointed. If you get a chance, request for Cody or Rhino to guide you down the river. They have the most experience with the river and will give you the ride of your life! Additionally, for all you rafters, one quick tidbit if you thought you'd be getting your lunch/dinner after your trip like you normally would in the Forks, think again if you were planning on packing a snack/lunch! You actually pull over half way through the river trip to where the campsite is where the overnights stay, and the staff makes you your lunch along the river, which includes your choice of steak, haddock, chicken, burger or veggie burger, with rice pilaf, coleslaw, 4 bean salad, and a homemade chocolate chip cookie, served with lemonade and/or iced tea. Just be careful of eating too much because you will be rafting a few more hours to complete the rest of the river! And well you also need to be able to fit back into your life jacket! Trust me, I've been there and had to readjust my PFD! And don't forget, HAVE FUN!!! The P'nob is my favorite river by far! I heart it so much, I am doing it 3 times this year alone! The most fun I've had in decades. My daughter and I and a group of our mutual friends spent the weekend on the Penobscot river with Three Rivers Rafting. I've done the single day trip and it is fun but it so over far too quickly. The two day trip is much more laidback. There is time to actually play in and on the river. Numerous opportunities to swim, time to jump off rock, play in a natural water slide, climb under a waterfall, the sky is so clear you can see every star from horizon to horizon. The trip includes five meals three of which are prepared while on the river, all the camping gear you need apart from your own sleeping bag. This trip allows you to get to know your guides and the river. If you love the outdoors you can not find a better two day trip. I'll be doing this again read more

I go on this trip every year with my friends. We do the overnight on the Penobscot and it is something I look forward to all year. You start your trip at the power plant and drop right before "Exterminator" (yes this is a rapid name). Every year we watch the day trippers from a 200 ft cliff above this rapid and watch boats explode. I shudder with the thoughts of this monster!! Not kidding. I won't give away all the surprises but the river is sooo awesome! When you do the overnight, you stay on an island in the middle of the Penobscot. There is a delicious meal prepared for you, get the lobster option, so you can kick back with a beverage of choice or few. The next morn back on the river to pound a waterfall for as much as you can stand it. Don't sleep on this overnight (nice play on words, huh?)!!! 5 stars! Skydiving and rafting great way to spend the weekend. Jumping out of a plane first thing in the morning, probably one of the best things you can expirience in life... A GIANT thank you Owen!....but no throw in the Penobscot running @ 3200 the day we visited and you call it a fun weekend! Ryan was our guide trip was phenomenal, Ryan was great! (Rhino was on the trip, for the earlier crabby review)had a great lunch on the river bank. They really pull it all together. The restaurant at the camp is pretty much the only gig in town for dinner eats. All the guides hangout, fun place to party!!! If your bored with the same old nonsense in life, take the time to visit these folks they'll turn you around. read more

We had a wonderful time! Really great trip down the river (we did the Penobscot), and our guide (Chris) was amazing and had 10+ years experience, the outfit really took safety seriously, and the midday meal was delicious and filling (with lots of veggie options). I had steamed fish! A lot of people we went with had been before or had tried other companies, and everyone seemed to prefer three rivers over any of the other outfitters. Our group was a blast, although we couldn't float down the river because it was so early in the season. You need to go in mid-June or later when the water and air temps are higher. I *highly* recommend staying the night after rafting, especially if you have a long drive ahead, like back to Boston. You're going to be stone tired and exhausted; we crashed at 8pm and I cannot imagine trying to drive while being so dead tired. This is after arriving the night before around 11pm, too (so we didn't try to drive the morning of). You can make a weekend out of it and go hike in Baxter State Park, too: we did and got to see male and female moose, deer, and pristine views. Rafters beware: if you decide to go rafting over Memorial Day weekend, please pack tons of extra insulating layers for the river. I had two underarmor shirts but quickly realized I was going to die of pneumonia on the river; thankfully, Three Rivers was passing out extra gear to anyone who needed it (although there were limited quantities). Next time, I will be sure to bring wool socks, extra longjohns, a cap, and waterproof gloves and not borrow any, I promise! Also: once you raft with them, you'll get a coupon for future trips. I'm considering doing the Dead River this year if I can find the time. Why four stars? We stayed in one of the rustic bunkhouses, which was nice enough, but there were some natural holes in the walls (from the wood that was cut; it was part of a knob area) and the screen door was slightly askew, which meant that there were spiders waiting to greet us when we arrived. Eww! Sorry, but my tent would have protected me better. We shooed the spiders out, but we thought we were getting a more insulated cabin overall. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of. read more

First off, I really wanted to give a 5 star review going into the trip we had planned over Labor Day weekend 2010 with these guys. Especially because our experience last year was great... but there were just too many disappointments this time around We had an amazing experience camping and rafting down the Penobscot River last year with Rhino so we decided to make it happen again this year and booked back in mid-July. Upon booking, I requested Rhino again since we knew he had excellent experience with the river, felt safe with him and had a blast. The folks that took my request and processed the reservation assured me that I was early and the first one to request him, so we were all set. It was noted in the reservation. The booking process for the group went very smoothly and upon arriving to camp the night before the rafting trip, everything seemed fine. When we checked in the morning of the trip, signed waivers and geared up, the boat guides were announced and the one I had specifically requested was not assigned to us! I asked Allison, the trip leader for that day, and she sort of shrugged me off saying that a lot of people request Rhino and they really can't do anything about it. No mention of my far-in-advance request or the fact that I had done it back in July (and it's now September). I later learned that the people that went down the river with him had been hanging out at the bar with him the night before. Funny how all of that works out. The thing that really bothers me is, that if there really are no guarantees, then just manage my expectations better and don't assure me that my guide request is "all set" if you really can't back that up or do anything about when it doesn't happen. Of course, there's also the part about how one of our boats (a group of 12, so two separate boats) ended up with a guide in his first year that dumped us down the cribworks class V and had all 8 people in the boat swimming through whitewater for a half a mile. Our boat was the only boat dumped all day. Ironic. The other half of our group had a seemingly competent guide - but later in the evening he visited our campsite telling us stories about how he drove his truck into a tree after having 6ish beers and doing a few lines of coke. Not exactly the kind of guy you feel comfortable guiding you down potentially deadly rapids. Finally, that night around 1am (ish) our whole campsite was woken up by the site next to ours - some guides were hanging out and literally yelling/singing at the top of their lungs. Not that I'm not all for having a good time - but being respectful is still important. There's no one to even complain to because all of the employees seem to engage in those activities... read more

Three Rivers is by far the best company to raft with bar none! I have been rafting with this company numerous times over the past 7 years now, and I would honestly recommend them to anyone! I have actually done all three rivers with this company, Dead, Kennebec, and Penobscot, and they were all great experiences. I have had many different guides over the years, and have yet to come across one I didn't like. I have also formed some of my best friendships through my experiences out on the river, and this place has become not only a retreat, but a second home for me. My husband and I have been rafting with these guys about 3 times a year for the last few years. They are awesome! I always recommend them to people, and those who have gone really enjoyed themselves. They are some of the most highly trained guides who know their stuff. They have some of the best bands,parties, and bonfires. PLUS, you can go and have the best time rafting AND jumping out of a plane! The airport is on the same road as their Penobscot Outpost, so their is no reason you shouldn't book both! :) What says the most, is over the years, we have seen the same people showing up just like ourselves and booking over and over again. Came for a bachelor party weekend and had an absolute blast. Rafting was out of this world and the camp ground was perfect. Huge and private wooded campsites with plenty of room to spread out. Staff was friendly and laid back, plus the bar and restaurant was a nice luxury if you wanted to put a few back with your river guides after the day. Went skydiving the second day and got to take in views that are unmatched on the east coast. Had such a great time that we're coming back for more next year. Would recommend to anyone looking for an adrenaline packed weekend! read more
