It's a properly traditional pub, with low ceilings, old ornaments on the walls and a great tradiitonal menu. On summers days they also open up an outside area which serves burgers, bacon rolls and the like. The food here is always exemplary and well-priced and the staff are always super friendly. There's a lovely outdoor seating area which is a spacious, chilled out place to enjoy a sunny day. It's close proximity to Monknash beach also make it an ideal pit stop after a day by the seaside. I went in about two hours ago for a pint of Butty Bach, which is brewed in the Wye Valley. It's a fantastic, strong bitter and one I always have when visiting here. The odd celebrity has been spotted within these walls and it's not at all difficult to see why. In the local area, the Plough and Harrow is truly one of the finest traditional pubs.

Apparently, The Plough and Harrow was awarded the honour of being one of the ten best seaside pubs by The Guardian. It's not too hard to understand why. This is a traditional pub through and through. There's no loud music or slot machines to be found here. Instead there are open fires, delicious meaty aromas and that summery smell of spilt cider from the bar. The staff are exceptionally friendly and show a great amount of attention to detail. The food in The Plough and Harrow is delectable. Really. You know how everyone's favourite roast dinner is their own Mum's? Not anymore; the Plough wins out. So, in short, I agree with Gareth.

It's really well decked out inside. It's been refurbished but it has still kept that traditional, village pub feel which is so important in these types of places. It's also apparently haunted and many locals claim to have seen some spooky goings on here. They do one of the best Sunday lunches here aswell, with your standard choice of meats. Last time I checked that was £6.99 but that may well have changed. Really friendly bar staff here, and there's always good banter to be had with them and the regulars. It's one of those increasingly rare places these days where there's never any trouble, everyone seems to know each and get along, and there's an all round, homely relaxed vibe here. There's a pool table, dart board and a large seating area here too and although still cosy, there's always plenty of space here. This is where I'd normally write my main gripes and faults but I genuinely can't think of any! Full marks.

They've done the entire place up and it's got the huge benefit of having a totally separate pool room in it. I can't think of anywhere I've been to recently which has a totally separate area and it's nice to not be bumping into people and things as you're trying to play pool. This pub was my local before I moved to Cardiff and it's got the best staff and atmosphere in any pub in Bridgend in my opinion. They always have stuff on, whether it's live music or pub quizzes or karaoke. It's mainly older people in here but it's never jam packed to the point that you become overwhelmed and depressed by the ravages of age as you're trying to enjoy a pint. The food here changes every day and they have curry days, carveries and other themed days on differing nights of the week. The food here is really well prepared and well priced too. One of the best pubs in Bridgend on a Friday and Saturday, it can get a little dead during the week. If you want a chat with a few friends it's ideal. The Farmers Arms is a long established business, situated opposite the Pitcott Pool in St Bride's Major. Although it's a CAMRA recommended pub, with a good selection of real ales, its main business is food, where you can eat either in its sizeable main restaurant or have a bar meal. You'll find nothing trendy or unexpected here. The menu is broad but predictable, and when I visited for Sunday lunch its clientele were predominantly senior citizens. Unusually there is no inclusive menu, but each course was reasonably priced, with generous portions. The desserts were particularly plentiful and at £4.50 on average reasonable value for money. It also has a good fish menu, with sole and coley the highlighted daily special offerings when I visited. The staff were very friendly and efficient, providing brisk service without making you feel hurried or harried. Overall well worth a visit. It would be an ideal place to end up after a long walk on the Southerndown coast or the Merthyr Mawr sand dunes.

Shame then that this experience was let down by a lacklustre initial welcome and the quality of the food served. Though the restaurant service was attentive and the mushroom stoganough was quickly and reasonably presented, it was just unpleasant to eat, which I suppose is the key factor. Chips were cooked nicely, crisp on outside and soft centred, but they were the usual caterers' mass produced ones (presumably bought in big bags) that taste as if they've been reconstituted and not like freshly cut chips from proper spuds. Pudding was priced at town center restaurant prices lemon meringue roulade but looked like it had been thrown at the plate from the other side of the kitchen a real smash up. This is definitely not fine dining. Is this a pub or is it pretending to be a restaurant and doing neither very well? The location of the pub/restaurant is good, on the road out of St Brides towards Wick just by the duck pond. If you like traditional, low beamed rooms decorated with hanging jugs and such like, with dark red carpets and traditional dark wooden tables, then this is the place for you personally find this decor dated and gloomy. Not great.

I've never come here without a booking. The restaurant part is small and dark with a fireplace at one end and is close to the bar (as is every room). The main area has multiple TVs and is geared towards drink as much as food. There is a small area off to one side with a large screen TV set up like a living room which is always full of people relaxing and watching the TV when I pop by. The food here is fantastic always and although sometimes it isn't perfect it's always created with care. The menu doesn't vary too much and there are a few starters and a few mains and there is a slightly different lunch menu here. I'm always here with 3 other people and we always enjoy our meals. The desserts are pretty standard but the starters and mains can be different. Service isn't always instant but where is in a pub? You'll not have to wait long and you'll get some lovely hot bread with butter and oil & balsamic vinegar for dipping. The owner is often pottering around and you are as likely to have her take your order as one of the staff. Worth the trip out into the middle of nowhere :-)
