What a beauty of a ruin towering in the midth of river Dee!
The car park is about a 15 min walk away from the boat crossing. If the weather is nice, it's a lovely walk along a small country path down to the river. You ring the bell and the lovely boat man comes and takes you to the middle of the river where the castle is in plain sight.
It's a wee ride to the island. You can go inside the castle and see the well, the dungeon, the rooms above and walk around the island or just sit on a bank and enjoy the sun tickling your skin.
Toilets are at the car park. Ticket office on the island.
The castle has lots of history and was build by the Black Douglas who was a strong supporter of the king at that time. Apparently the water level was higher in the middle ages, such the castle was quite a fortress.
Enjoy the trip! read more
