I would not recommend Ms. Cornett to anyone. While handling my divorce and alimony case she help…read morewith my ex-spouse's attorney to work diligently to prepare my settlement agreement so I would sign it in December of 2018. As of January 1st of 2019, alimony was no longer going to be tax deductible for my ex and I would have not had to pay taxes on the alimony. As a result I now have to pay taxes every year on my alimony, my ex gets to deduct it. She certainly was not representing my interests at all! My divorce was final in June of 2020, there was no rush....other than it was a huge benefit to my husband I was divorcing! Why would she not advise me to not worry about it and rush to sign it? She was to represent me and look out for me, I hired and paid her. It is a huge burden to pay over $4,000 in taxes every year. I literally receive after paying taxes the exact same amount of alimony I was receiving while formally separated ( separate living quarters, same house) with my ex paying all the bills, me on his insurance. Every year at tax time I am in awe that I was blindsided by her and trusted her. I ask myself how I allowed this to happen and did not know what I was doing. I trusted my attorney! I try to forgive myself for making such a bad decision, the bad decision was hiring Dana Cornett. Perhaps she only represents people she likes or she feels are deserving in her opinion. I see other good reviews and I am like why did she not represent me? I would not trust Dana Cornett, its a risk. She does no deserve one star, it should be 0. Her representation has cost me a huge financial burden.

The other attorney was doing a decent job, but I wanted to get a "second opinion" as to whether he was doing everything possible to get the best outcome in my case. Andrew reviewed the facts, heard my entire story, and gave me very sound advice without trying to displace the other attorney in an effort to earn more fees for himself. I would definitely call Andrew again if needed (hopefully not needed, though!), and I 100% recommend him to anyone else seeking criminal defense in the Harrisonburg area.

When my 20 1/2 year old daughter was charged with "illegal possession of alcohol" charge, i.e…read more under age drinking, a lawyer in the family highly recommended we hire a lawyer in the Harrisonburg area, as he/she will know the court judges, police officers, etc. and will make the best recommendations or negotiate a reduced penalty. We hired Mr. Oliver from the Evans Law Group after doing some research into who the best attorneys for handling the illegal possession charge (We learned that your body is considered a container, thus the 'illegal possession" charge.) I was surprised that Mr. Oliver recommended that we contest the charge, as my daughter was drinking and was stopped while walking back to her dorm with a friend, who also charged. However, Mr. Oliver thought we could win the case as my daughter did not admit to drinking nor did she take a breathalyzer test. All first time offenders are offered the chance to attend the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program (VASAP) where you can have your record cleared of an underage drinking conviction, which is a felony in Virginia. You're required to attend classes, and perform charity work for a minimum of 6 months, or possibly longer depending upon the charge(s). So instead of negotiating a reduced time period and/or fees, Mr. Oliver recommended that my daughter plead innocent. During the period between the initial court date and the trial, Mr. Oliver's only communication was his invoices. I had to call his office to find out what was going on. At the trial, the police office gave his account, saying my daughter 'reeked of alcohol' and saw her stumbling while she walked. What was Mr. Oliver's defense argument? ... "Someone could have spilled alcohol on her"... that was it! I paid $1,000 for an argument a high school kid would have made. In fact, the police office wanted a more serious penalty... no admittance to the VASAP program, resulting in a felony conviction on my daughter's record. The judge did not like that my daughter pleaded not guilty and was trying to escape responsibility... Thanks for that poorly thought out recommendation, Mr. Oliver. She would have plead guilty and taken the VASAP first offender program if it wasn't for your recommendation that she contest the charge. Fortunately, the judge did not take away the VASAP first offender program offer, which my daughter is going through now. To wrap up this short story, I HIGHLY recommend you do not hire Mr. Oliver or the Evans Law Group. A complete waste of time and money!!

I would like to explain this review. I would give zero stars if I could…read more The lawyer I am referencing in this review is Hunter Jackson. Firstly -- during the period in which I had this firm on retainer, I moved residences and was charged $150 for changing my address. The problem is, the firm never changed the address they had on record for me, and continued to send correspondence where I was no longer living. Second -- on at least three separate occasions, My lawyer told me "I didn't realize that's they way the courts worked in ____". Isn't it his job to know?? Thirdly -- After having my case delayed for OVER A YEAR; on the day my court date finally came; my lawyer told me "I just figured out who the opposing attorney is". After a year, my lawyer did not know who the opposing lawyer was (ended up being the main Commonwealth Attorney in my case); but I feel any competent lawyer should have known this, and LONG BEFORE 14 months. Basically, he had no problem taking $4000 from me (earning him interest in an account while my case was delayed and delayed); and offered absolutely nothing in return. There was an occasion where he thought our court date was for some other matter; and had to apologize to the judge. After my sentencing, my lawyer told me he was leaving this firm. I don't know if he was fired, or chasing after more money; but either way I am left with a very bad taste in my mouth. This firm might be okay with simple things like divorces and living wills; but do not even think of using them for criminal matters! It is my own fault for not firing him after he refused to communicate with me for nearly 3 months. Consider it a lesson learned, and I will be spreading this review by word of mouth also.
