Still, it's a peaceful spot with room to grow.

But the grounds are overgrown and weedy, equipment fading and in disrepair and my encounter with staff was not uplifting. The pool is locked and empty. I inquired about the status at the front desk. The clerk did not look up from her computer but said the pool was being serviced and they had no idea if and when it would be fixed. I didn't see anyone working on the pool. Since they have a summer camp in session, it would be great if the pool was operational. There is a really nice set of tennis courts (12ish). There is green space for football and a baseball diamond. A nice set of workout equipment from the Colts seems in need of a good cleaning. I was excited to find a boat ramp with parking area. This area needs to be cleaned and patrolled. The River access site is beautiful. The park offers free daily lunches to those in need and also provides summer camps. I found these resources valuable to the community. I was really surprised to find the park not pristine and vibrant for 4th of July holiday. The flagpoles were even empty.

The pool opened in 1930 and in 1962 an ice rink was installed. The park encompasses 42 acres and includes two playgrounds, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, football/softball/baseball areas, and has played host to the popular Irvington Farmer's Market. It's also a popular spot for Indy Parks concerts. Those into geocaching should note the park actually is host to multiple individual geocaches. The park is actually surprisingly undeveloped. It has rolling hills, a popular spot for winter sledding, and a good amount of the park doesn't even have sidewalks. It's remained quite natural over the years with lots of mature trees. As a wheelchair user, of course, this can be somewhat frustrating given that a certain amount of development is needed to be accessible. While I love Ellenberger Park as a place to visit, there are geocaches I can't reach and places where I risk tipping over if I venture to them. Trust me, I've done it more than once. The park is close to most Irvington area restaurants along with the adjacent Pleasant Run and nearby 10th Street. The Park is named after John Ellenberger, whose family owned much of the land in the area and who'd been generous with the community and had often let residents use the land. In fact, there was controversy when the park was "officially" established as it required a tax hike. People couldn't figure out why they were being asked to pay taxes for something they'd already been using for free. But, they did. The park temporarily changed names, but residents again protested and it returned to Ellenberger Park as it has been since the early 1920s. Ellenberger Park lacks sheltered picnic areas and public restrooms. There was talk of creating more parking, but it would have cost the sledding hill and that was too steep a price to pay (Sorry, couldn't resist). The ice rink was closed in 2009 due to needed repairs that were deemed too expensive. Even the ball fields don't have seating with them. Ellenberger Park is that rarity - a rather large park more focused on nature than activity. While I can't quite go a 5-star because of accessibility issues and some general upkeep concerns, it remains a place I visit often.

The park has a very nice paved trail to run. It trail is pretty flat and is rock/dirt. There is also more woodsy trails available to hike if you so desire. That trail runs along a small creek. Additionally, You will find benches and picnic tables scattered across along the trail across the park. I did not see any restroom facilities around the park. I did however, see a few porta-potties. The park's tennis courts (2 sets of 4) are in need of repair. The nets are decent, but the courts themselves are ragged. It has a unique set up, The fence is tall in the back and short on the sides. It makes it easy to watch, but I can imagine some balls sailing over the fence. The park is home to a huge green field that is well maintained. There is where you will find a football field, or at least two opposing goal posts and two baseball/kickball fields. Those fields are the pure basic and they do not offer many amenities or features. The field can be used for activities such as playing catch, frisbee, soccer, kite flying, and field hockey. It was surprised to see that the park had an aquatic complex, however, it is not operational and was empty. It does look like it has a lot of potential though. There is a small playground at the park that consist of a swing set with an older set of swings and an accessible jungle gym that has parallel bars and slides. The ground is lined with wood chips. The park is also home to a sand volleyball court and some of the most bold squirrels I have seen. They are not afraid of people at all. The volleyball court is decent, nothing special. The Irvington Farmers Market, day camp, community water gun fight and some concerts are hosted here. It is a nice park to play sports or workout. The playgrounds are a bit lacking and would probably not be as fun for kids.

I don't know -- but that sounds like a good guess, doesn't it? Anyway, because the park is a bit elevated, you can get a great view of the downtown Indianapolis cityscape. It's really cool. The park itself is small and is more of a neighborhood park. It has a small playground with a small play structure. It has slides, some bars to climb, and some swings. The play structure is definitely more appropriate for kids ages 5 and under. I think older kids would get bored with it quickly. I would not go out of my way to visit this park just to play at the playground, but I would visit to sit at one of the picnic benches to eat and enjoy the view. Parking is along the street -- there isn't a designated parking lot. There also weren't any restrooms or water fountains that I saw.

Greene Park has a comfort station with a mural of Dr. Maya Angelou on it. There's also a memorial here dedicated to Indiana AIDS advocate Ryan White, whose story continues to resonate. Greene Park has relatively new playground equipment including ADA and toddler swings, an ADA jungle gym, a percussion set, monkey bars, tunnels, and lots of places for the kids to play including a splash pad. There's also four tennis courts. The park has quite a bit of green space (seems appropriate, eh?) with picnic tables that offer some distance from the park's features to allow for family time or quiet time. There are also some short, easy walking paths within and around the park. Jake Greene Park is relatively small at 10.1 acres and was founded in 1971. Like Yelper Tank G., I wrestled with whether to offer this park a 3 or 4-star rating and leaned heavily toward 3-stars. However, I'm also somebody who appreciates parks with ADA features and despite this park needing some love I do feel like those ADA features have been well cared for here. So, I'm going to go with a 4-star review while noting this really isn't a destination park and could definitely use some additional upgrades.

The park's playground is simple, but nice. It is on a bed of wood chips and its equipment includes a bank of ADA/toddler/traditional swings, a percussion set, a quad pod spinner, a merry-go-round, and a large jungle gym with a bunch of slides, monkey bars, and tunnels. The jungle gym is ADA accessible with a ramp that leads to the top.The equipment is in good repair. The park has a large patch of clear green space that could be used for picnics, football games, soccer games, flying a kite, or playing catch. Off to the side of the green space is where you will find a nice tree shaded area with some picnic tables and benches to sit. It look like there is a meeting area over there with benches around a big rock too. There are paved paths that run through the shaded area and around the permiter of the park. The last amenity that the park has is a very nice set of 4 tennis courts that are side by side and fenced in together. The park could use a bit of maintenance and was riddled with trash all over, but it is still good. I was on the fence between a 3 and 4 star review with this one, and thought that it was closer to a 4 than a 3. This is definitely a park to check out, especially in the Summer when the splash pad is up and running.

The playground, remodeled in 2024, includes two climbing structures (one for toddlers and one for older kids), as set of swings, and a small splash pad ( for warmer weather). The basketball court has a small set of bleachers and is separated from the playground by a picnic pavilion. The playground area is enclosed by a fence so that kids don't wonder towards the river or road. The Municipal Gardens community center is currently closed, but houses a gymnasium and event center that people can reserve. Behind the center is a picnic area, play area and stairs/accessible ramp that leads down to the river. I saw beautiful views of the river from the fenced walkway. My visit took a sad note when I spotted a historic marker to the north describing the brutal lynching of 19 year old George Tompkins in 1922 on the grounds of the park grounds. The plaque memorializes young Tompkins and describes the history of racially motivated lynchings in America. The story of Tompkins weighed heavy on my mind. A bike path leads north out of the park past a heavily wooded area. There is plenty of parking, including accessible parking in the lots around the center. In the summer, kid's may sign-up for day camps held at the park.

The floor of the playground is lined with wood chips. The park is small and is fenced in. The highlight of the park is its basketball court. It has a full basketball court with adjustable rims. The court floor and nice and the rims and backboard are in good repair. You will also find a large covered shelter with picnic tables and a grill. It can be reserved and used to host functions. It is adjacent to a large building that houses a gymnasium, and multi-purpose gathering space that you can hosts functions. It is available to rent The large basketball gym inside serves as host to basketball leagues and open gyms. The venue is also the site of special events such as backpack give aways, and serves as a warming center during the cold. While I was there, the grounds keeper was maintaining the park which was nice to see. The park is just ok because it has older equipment that could use some updating and it does not have a lot of amenities such as bathrooms. I would not make a special trip to visit this park, but If I came across it during my travels and had time to kill then I may visit.
