The website does a great job of explaining where to park. We followed our gps and it took us the emergency exit entrance. The entrance is right on the main brick road. The museum will also validate your pass so parking is free. Entering was easy and we let the kids loose. We spent about 2 hours but they could have easily stayed longer. They do not allow food in the museum but you can come and go as you please. Great experience to let your kids explore.

If you've toured the Grand Caverns walking tour and find yourself peering into the dark recesses of…read morethe cavern, the Fountain Cave adventure tour is a must on your next visit. Visiting on a day when temperatures were only forecast to reach a high of 42F, it was pleasantly warm inside Fountain Cave and did not require bundling up for most people. Long sleeves, long pants, and boots, are required due to the terrain you "may" cover in addition to keeping the [damaging] oils from your skin off the cave features. Helmets, mounted lighting, gloves and knee pads are provided and were all in good condition. The floor of the 1800s walkway is mostly dry but moist areas are present throughout the tour and can be very slippery; following the instructions provided by the tour guides (three points of contact) will ensure everyone stays upright in these areas. Dana and Ashelynn were our guides for a group of 7 and always took point and rear to ensure everyone was safe and accounted for. Dana took the prominent role in discussing the history, and geology, of Fountain Cave and was a very engaging guide. While Fountain Cave is not as large as Grand Caverns, getting to tour this cave by headlamp and put yourself INTO the exhibit is truly an awesome experience. The bonus comes in the form of the Adventure "opportunities" that run near or parallel to the original 1800s pathway; for those not able or interested in taking the Adventure routes, you simply stay on the 1800s walkway and meet up with the rest of the group a small distance down the path. There are a few instances on the tour where a break is taken in total darkness. The first is a short ways into the tour and is designed to show you the amount of light that can be picked up from the entrance way after your eyes are given time to adjust. The second sets the stage to show how the cave would have been illuminated by a small candle. Note: please be respectful of the other guests if taking photos in these black-out moments; lowering your camera to the lowest brightness setting and staying back from the group prevents ruining the experience for others. IMO, the only way to make the Fountain Cave tour better is to increase the length of time spent within. Just like the Grand Caverns tour, I still found myself peering into the areas off the guided tour path wondering...is there more to this cave that hasn't been discovered yet.

Large rooms, easy to see all the formations in the walkways are easy to pass through. Quite a few steps for those who are challenged to do physical walking but otherwise it's pretty cool. Been to quite a few caverns and this was one of the better ones and a lot to see.

The sites were level and fairly well maintained. The overall camp location is very large and offers a lot of sites with privacy. Some are very small and can't accommodate large vehicles or tents. Be sure to double check the pictures. The main road is well maintained but you must have a high clearance vehicle if the site calls for it. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The bath house was clean and standard. They were in the process of painting it during our stay. One shower is available inside by the toilets and two are available in the rear (open roof top). Camp grounds have access to MTB trails - hilly and fun. If we came back to the area we would stay here again.

Its location is perfectly situated for mountain biking and/or hiking on Lookout Mountain, the North River, and is easy driving distance from other legendary trails like Reddish Knob. Booking is straightforward and easy, although their cancellation policies could be a sticking point for people coming from a long distance on a strict time frame. The owners are responsive and communicative, and very friendly and accommodating when it comes to booking groups. The restroom/shower facilities are clean and perfectly adequate- don't expect the Ritz, but they're great if you need a shower after a hard day of riding or hiking (and you didn't visit the swimming hole for some reason that I won't even try to understand.) The cabins are also clean and cozy- they'd be perfect for a family of four who are used to camping and close quarters. The tent sites are basic, with fire pits, picnic tables at most sites, and plenty of space for a few tents and hammocks. The campground also stands out for its super fun mountain biking trails that actually run through the campground. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a young kid, you'll have fun on them. The swimming hole at the bottom of the hill is a true gem- there's nothing like going for a dip in its cool waters in the middle of the summer. I've been to Stokesville twice in the past month and am looking for the slightest pretext to go again soon.

This was my family's second time staying at Crabtree Falls Campground. The owner, AJ, is super…read morefriendly, responsive, and helpful in reserving by phone and email. We stayed at campsites 30, 31, and 32, which are at one end of the campground and feel more secluded, farther away from the other campsites. This means your car is not right next to your site, but we didn't mind walking back and forth (slightly uphill, along a path); we recently bought a collapsible utility wagon that was super helpful in carrying big things to and from the site. The sites sit higher above the river, so it's a bit steep if you want to go down and enjoy the water, but you can do so carefully and it's well worth it. You will love sitting by your fire, listening to the rushing river and feeling like you're in the middle of nowhere, even though many luxuries like flush toilets, hot showers, and even a camp store are just steps away. No need to bring ice or firewood; the camp provides them at an added reasonable cost (but bring an axe to help break up the logs in case the wood is damp or fresh). Bring a grill-top for the firepit if you plan to cook. Keep in mind that the campsites are not very large; ask AJ when you book if your tent will fit. There's plenty to do in the area: Hike Crabtree Falls, taste beers at Devil's Backbone or Blue Mountain Breweries, enjoy ciders at Bold Rock, and next time we'll try the distilleries. Crabtree Falls is definitely my favorite campground in all of Virginia!

We always stay in the cabins (which is dog friendly) and they are always clean and super cozy. We have only stayed during the fall since there is no A/C but I can tell you that during the cooler nights the base board heat keeps you very warm. The constant sound of the creek right outside your window is soothing and a great change from a busy life. There is absolutely NO cell service so be prepared for that. Some super sweet camp cats! This is our 2nd time coming here and we love it. Most of the site is meant for campers. But there…read moreis a small area for tent camping. There are also some cabins on the water front. And a lodge that looks like a small motel. We come on Memorial Day weekend. The place always seems full. There were fireworks on Saturday night that were cool. Also music was playing under the pavilion. Everyone is super friendly. There is a nice sized lake surrounded by a beach. They have 2 socks to jump off in the middle. The store has some merchandise and a snack bar. Also there is a game room with some video games and 2 pool tables. Outside the store is mini golf. They recently built a pool which is real nice. Not sure if it is heated but it was warmer than the lake. Next to the pool is a playground.

We enjoyed the live music in the evenings, as well. Site 86 was pretty awful. There is a large tree approximately 3 feet inside the site border, making it impossible not to back in at a sharp angle to be able to access the FHU. Unfortunately, this also sets your front door and steps right at the next campsite's sewer hose. One misstep and you would faceplant on their hose. This makes in impossible to sit outside under the awning. The picnic table and fire ring are behind the site, sloping steeply down a muddy hill. The water pressure was almost non-existent. So, we decided to take advantage of the bath house directly across from our site. Not a good idea, as the water backed ip in the shower and left standing water full of bugs and whatever other nastiness was in the drain. There seem to be many full time campers there. Very nice people. Kind and friendly. However, the site themselves were pretty trashy considering the daily rate for these sites. One had a toilet plunger that appeared to have been flung onto the site deck. Others had piles of random items and tarps everywhere. Again, cool people but it's ridiculous to charge the rate this place does and expect to look at other people's pile of junk. We camp often in Virginia, but won't be going back to this place. Sad, because the place has good potential and is conveniently located to lots of places, but...ick.
