Woodlander is pricey, but it specialises in novelties and little presents. Located on the posher…read moreend of Ashby's shops - which includes a couple of clothing boutiques, a flower shop and a deli - it stocks a lot of Cath Kidston, Radley and Alessi, with large sections for homeware like photo albums, scented candles and kitchen utensils. They keep some natural-style cosmetics and bath products around - a lot of Crabtree and Evelyn, Burt's Bees and some kind of Lush knockoff with tiny bath bombs. Overall their stock is aimed for the average middle-aged, middle-class Ashbeian, and it all tesselates into one 'Woodlander' collection rather than many different brands and styles. I can imagine a Woodlander Christmas, or a family building their home with Woodlander pieces - there's just enough variation to please different crowds and still fit a loose aesthetic. Atmosphere-wise, it's just OK. It looks nice, it's quiet and staff generally leave you alone. However, I find myself patronised or just treated oddly by staff every time I buy anything or ask questions - I'm a sixth former and I don't come from a wealthy background, so I'm not really their target market, but I'd like to be able to shop normally. I've sometimes found myself being watched, as though I'm going to steal or break something - not the kind of service I like! I rarely visit, even rarer buy things - it's difficult to find anything that costs less than £10 or so, and I'd rather go somewhere more welcoming - but I've bought a quirky coaster, gift tins of glow in the dark stars and Jelly Belly candles here for Christmas presents, and all were really well-received. I'd come here again if I needed a present in a pinch, or if I just wanted some inspiration.

It has wide variety of bags including Radley and Kipling, which my wife finds endlessly fascinating. The cookware section although small contains a wide variety of kitchen gadgets, some of which you never knew you needed! The giftware section is brilliant for birthdays, weddings and christenings, or a gift for the person that literally seems to have everything! The staff are friendly and helpful, and have a good knowledge of their stock. Woodlander may not be the cheapest, but if you are looking for a quality present, it is difficult to beat.

This little store has been run since 1997 by the same man (only staff) who served me today - basically cutting me a new key (living in a centuries old manor home means you are using "historic" keys - and he can grind them for you. Great, prompt, polite service and very interesting guy to chat to (as I did). I think the main business is the keys and shoe repairs. Strangely much of his limited space is taken up with a gigantic (given the small size of the store) collection of Steiff "button in ear" Teddy Bears. https://www.steiffteddybears.co.uk/more-things-steiff/steiff-button-in-ear.php. Now that is weird - don't you think?? If the shoe repairs are as good and as prompt as the key cutting then you will be happy! He did have a few (VERY few) pairs of shoes. Now this is a little find in the heart of the Midlands especially if you love jewellery like i do…read more The Spellbound bead company is a bead shop with a difference and has the best selection of items i have ever seen in any other bead shop and i have been to quite a few. It has an online function as well if you don't live in the area but if you do then it is well worth a visit. Plus it is not just a shop but a kind of workshop too so i will tell you more. The address is as follow: The Spellbound Bead Company 47 Tamworth Street Lichfield Staffordshire WS13 6JW In terms of location the shop is in the heart of Lichfield City Centre which is a lovely city with lots to see and do if you don't know the area already. You can reach Lichfield by train and bus and it is also close to the bigger city Birmingham. In terms of the actual shop, it is easy to find when you are in Lichfield centre and it is a big shop so you can't really miss it. The shop is very nice looking with the spellbound bead company written in huge letters above the huge shop windows. The buildings in Lichfield are all old looking anyway so they are very pretty. When you walk in there you can see immediately that the shop is massive. Plus you will be able to see two rooms from the front but then there is a huge room to the back. Ok so we will talk about the shopping first. This shop has everything you could need to make numerous amounts of jewellery and i actually started by going and buying the basics and now everybody gets jewellery for Christmas as i have got quite good at it. There are fixtures and fittings, various tools and materials, beads galore and so many books which give you thousands of inspirational ideas. The beads are laid out in colours and types so all of the big glass pendants are usually together but the most efficient way of finding what you would like is to go by colour which i find very easy to do. They are all in small compartments and there are thousands to choose from. Dotted around the store you will see small baskets and plastic compartments. These are for you to put your beads in before you get to the counter so it is easy for you not to loose them and for the shop to tally them up. The beads are all different prices and the price is stated on all of the different compartments. It is easy to see and everything is reasonable. Some of course are expensive but there is enough to choose from for any budget so don't worry about that at all. Now the staff here are brilliant and are always on hand to help out. They will stand there and talk to you about how to make things and what to buy and then what to do. It is useful that the shop sells kits with very easy to follow instructions so you could always try one of those at first and then start designing your own when you are feeling brave. From the workshop side of things they do bead workshops every month. You can go to introduction to jewellery making, looming and metal work. There are loads that crop up but it is worth finding out from them what is on and book it. These workshops do get booked up quite quickly so you do have to get in there but they are very helpful. The whole shop is a great experience for all jewellery lovers. The main thing is that the people who work there are so experienced and can help you in all aspects of jewellery making. I once walked in and said i want the round things that you squash as i didn't know what they were called. Within a few minutes she had found out what i was taking about. Now prices are great. Beads range from 1p to 30 pounds and over. Kits range between 3 and 30 pounds also. If you go in and tell them what you are aiming for they will help you as much as they can. They have sat there for half an hour with me before talking to me and showing me how to do things. In conclusion i love this shop and it will always get top marks. I can now make some really nice things for myself, family and friends and it is a great hobby to have. I love being able to walk in there, get friendly service and always find something that inspires me and that i want. If you do want to get into this hobby then this shop is well worth a visit. Thanks for reading. xxx P.S. This has been posted on other sites but always by me katygriff

This place has every arts supply and events decor piece your heart could possibly desire - sequinned ribbons to artificial peonies to bubble wrap to cards and invitations. Everything comes in 30 different colours and is bought wholesale, so you can buy in bulk if you so desire and also keeps it affordable. We raided it for supplies for my sister's wedding - high quality paper and card for the table plan (home-made by my own fair hand!), a box of 50 wedding confetti pouches (such good value), 15 pretty jars and a tonne of coloured beads for centrepieces, artificial cherry blossom branches (they just fitted the theme), and a lifetime's supply of blu-tack. And that was only the first of several (awesome) trips. Here's the big fat catch though - you can only get in if you're a business owner as it's officially aimed at trade buyers not amateur craft enthusiasts like me. In this case I had a useful aunt with a shop who registered for an account and brought us along. You still can't just wander in though - you need to show ID and leave any bags in lockers. And thus its existence has remained a closely guarded secret ;) Looking forward to any excuse to get to go back!
