They had two tv screens which she used to display pictures all evening. The bartender was pleasant and friendly and everyone looked like they had the best night.

The decor is somewhat typical of European wine bars with its softly lit interior and deep red feature wall. I love the large blackboard and the old wine barrels with bar stools in their street-side seating area. A sommelier is always on hand to offer advice and help you find the right wine to compliment your meal so it is pretty standard to start your dinner with a little wine tasting session. Both sommeliers who served me were friendly and helpful and they went out of their way to help us find the wines that best suited our pallet and/or meal. I love that John Ingle has included a wonderful array of good New Zealand wines on his list. The menu isn't extensive but the meals are usually fabulous and the portions are perfect - if you are into sampling good food, rather than eating bellyful! I have eaten from two of their menus so far and I haven't been disappointed. However, as with most dining experiences some dishes are always going to be that much better. I have added a few comments along with some photos. Pinot Plus has had Grabone vouchers on offer lately - perfect reason to check it out! Please note; you can get a sparking water instead of wine but no other type of beverage here - it is after-all, a wine bar!

We have tried out a lot of the restaurants in Hamilton, but Gothenburg is our choice always when celebrating special occasions especially birthdays. We all love the food and sharing the tapas dishes as we get to try a bit of each. I think the largest table we've had was for a birthday celebration with 14 of us! Not only is the food fantastic and never disappoints, but the staff are very welcoming and helpful in suggestions of how many of each tapas dish to order so that all of us can get a taste of each dish. They have an excellent range of craft beers that beer drinkers will enjoy. I prefer my wine and they have an excellent selection to choose from. We don't always order desserts because we are usually too full from the tapas dishes, but their desserts look wonderful and the few times I've been able to squeeze in a dessert, they have been heavenly. Whenever we have overseas family & friends staying with us in Hamilton, we make it a point to include a dinner at Gothenburg. Everyone we have taken there has thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambience. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves good food and good service.

The menu is geared for sharing dishes so ordering for one is a challenge. I had the local Lagar on tap, 1 of each of the 2 oysters offered, and the NZ green-lipped mussels with chiriso. They also gave me a complementary pita triangles with hummus. Overall, everything was delicious. I could have gone for more oysters, but didn't want to overdo it. The mussel dish had 7 good size mussels so I was satisfied without feeling stuffed. Glad I came to the Depot.

We came here as a group for their Quiz Night - thought we would switch it up from our regular quiz…read morenight at the Merchant. I was ordered the angus beef burger and was I surprised or what?! Comparing it to the Merchant, their burger was much nicer and better value for money :) On top of my head I think the Merchant is around $21 and the Dark Horse was charging $16.50 (includes fries). The only problem we had was the tables are really close together - really hard to maneuver around. Will probably go back in the future :)
