HOLE-IN-THE-WALL with a dirt parking lot…read more hides fermented liquid gems! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Normally, I would never stop at place like this, but several months ago, I was desperately, a hard to find local wine (Fossil Point- Pinot- which I found out by Goggling is likely made by a name brand local vineyard under another brand name for far less money, and so as not to undercut their "premium" selection. Anyway, I walked in, turned the corner, and almost immediately I spied the local wine, among a whole bunch of other local wines at decent prices. So, I talk to one the young fellows who work their & I placed an order for two cases... I was afraid that it would be discontinued.... but now, several months later I still see it there and now at Haggen. It is kind of cramped in there, and the first time I went there & turned around, I accidently knocked a bottle that was randomly sit on a box along side a windex bottle. I felt like an idiot bull in a china shop. Anyway, the owners were very cool, and they apologized...which was gracious. I was like holy crap, I am so sorry...but it only a White Wine anyway :) In this cramped space they somehow manage to pack lots of local wines, but you really need to look up, down, & bend down to see all of the selection. They also have an extensive beer selection, but few imports. Behind the counter they have the usual harder stuff & have some good vodkas. It could be that you can find something here rather than at Haggen, Von's, or Cal Fresh. Anyway, sometimes you can find gems in dirt! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We went there three times in 2 weeks and loaded up on goodies such as take 'n' bake pizza, chili, and OF COURSE the clam chowder. We also hit the bakery pretty hard and thoroughly enjoyed the berry cobbler, along with a few other sweet treats. Location is easy to find, plenty of parking and service very friendly. Any time I have a question even if Andy isn't there his employees are helpful and let me know they will ask him and get back with an answer. The store recently redid the parking and added a lighted sign outside and their hours are some of the best in Old Town Orcutt open early and closed late. I love that I can go in the store and ask questions about certain bottles and price and have a great conversation. I never feel pressured to buy higher priced higher allocated bottles. Infact the opposite Andy will give his honest opinion and recommend a different often times cheaper and easier Bottle to find. The prices so long as they are standard offerings and not the coveted allocated bottles are very fair or even excellent meeting or beating MSRP which never happens in smaller privately owned businesses. It's a refreshing experience that I can go in have a conversation and not really be expected to buy. Because of this I have been a return customer and will continue to support a local business with majority of my purchases. Let's face it unfortunately a local liquor store can rarely compete with big box stores on certain items but what makes since to get local my first stop will always be Orcutt Liquor & Deli.

This last weekend, we went to take milk back (it's a specially processed $12 gallon of milk) because it went sour. It was purchased just 5 days before it went bad and the expiration date wasn't until May. Of course, we got about 3 cups out of it when it was opened once and then two days later, reopened it and it was sour & would not froth. One of the managers refused to take it back and said "well it's halfway gone." Well yeah? We used it for a recipe the day we got it AND it wasn't supposed to expire until May. It was just 5 days later that it went sour. No issues with improper temperature in fridge. It was NOT left out. No contamination issues. It's not about the money. It's about not only a health hazard but the way it was handled. No refund, no solution to the issue. The manager shrugged and sent me on my way. I will no longer shop here and suggest others don't either. So disappointed.

The bad review praised/suggested la pico sita which is basically the best Mexican food in santa maria. Agreed. But, even la pico is questionable in standards. Best Mexican food is from mothers, grandmothers and aunts. And I promise you their methods aren't 100% sanitary. Even horrible national chain Chipotle failed with their "standards" ... I'll take love and respect over defrosting meat next to dirty dishes in the end game results. I say that with a grain of salt. I would prefer best practice, but when it comes to food, Mexican food specifically... there is a gray area. No one wants to get sick because of bad practices. But... ive thoroughly vetted l&k this week... and they were consistently on point. Felt good after each meal, like I walked out of fine sushi joint. As far as im concerned... l&k is to liquor/market/burritos as Swiss/shaws is to steak house . All are santa maria . Real/raw/staples Unless you have an immune disorder snowflake... enjoy it.
