I had a "main course" beetroot salad, which was tasty and beautifully presented, but would pass for a light starter at best. This had to be supplemented with their "famous chips", which were average chips, but shaped like tater tots. The bill for this light dinner and a cider -- £18.60. I do appreciate how accommodating they were for a vegan, but this won't be my new go-to restaurant. I might be back for drinks and board games, but probably not for food.

Like so many of London's traditional watering holes, The Chesham Arms in Hackney faced closure in…read morethe name of property development. The fate of this local pub seemed certain- it was labelled as 'inviable' by developers- and a significant amount of renovation was required modernise the 150-year-old building. But this all-too-familiar London tale has a happy ending: the pub was saved at the hands of a local publican and has been restored to its former glory. The story behind the Chesham Arms is a tremendous victory for the local community and for punters alike. I visited the boozer after it was named Pub of the Year by CAMRA last week, mostly because I was surprised that- despite being on my doorstep- it was completely under my radar. It's a smallish pub with a mix of tables and stools at the bar, the environment was boisterous and friendly, the bartenders were personable and the crowd was diverse. We arrived in time to see an elderly couple- obviously regulars- being warmly seen off by staff after enjoying a quiet tipple. As the night went on, there were larger, younger groups arriving, but games of Scrabble were still being waged and pizzas delivered by local pizzeria, Yard Sale. The music was decent and the selection of beer, both on tap and cask, was unbeatable and rotated in front of our eyes. The Chesham Arms is so utterly charming that it will make you envious of the lucky local residents. We popped in just for a pint, but ultimately planted ourselves there for a few hours, freely chatting with others at the bar and trying some great local beers. The pub retains a sense of its history, keeping a traditional décor and not opting for anything too flashy in the vein of mismatched furniture or gimmicky fixtures. They are intending to eventually open a kitchen, but I can vouch for the pizzas that were being delivered in droves (you can get your menu at the bar)- they looked hot, gooey and plentiful. The story behind The Cheshire Arms is at the crux of its identity, but it's a pub successful on every front. If you're in East London and not wary of going off the beaten track, it's worth the effort. If nothing else, your visit will restore your faith in just what a community can achieve in the face of gentrification, modernisation and unviability. Just don't tell too many people- there are only so many seats at the bar.

It's picturesque lampposts and leafy frontage are incredibly inviting. I can see why the community petitioned to save it from a terrible real estate redevelopment fate. The interior is a standard gastropub decor with two fireplaces (for when the beer garden is a bit too nippy). Big groups of young university aged people, board games, and a really remarkable beer garden (really something!) makes this pub a standout in the area. Real ales dominate, so forget your Stellas and Heinekens. There is a San Miguel though if you are really craving a familiar lager. I believe there is a simple food menu but they turn a blind eye to locals ordered pizza in, as I could tell from the 3 large boxes on the table next to us.

However when it gets busier, the noise level makes it hard to hear and be heard, which is a serious drawback for easily overwhelmed folks or for anyone who just doesn't feel like shouting. A small qualm: the hipster menu descriptions are so cryptic it's hard to know what you're ordering.

This is just such a lovely pub and fantastic for group dinners .I recently went out here for a…read moregoing away dinner and we had a large table and banquet - the dinner was great - wine even better - and desert gorgeous(home-made date ice cream). This pub was so different before renovated and has been brought back to life to such a high standard - all the original details are here with new tufted leather banquettes and old animal taxiderm box scenes . The overall feeling is more upmarket and gastro pub-like. Feels very special occasion and slightly formal. It is not really really expensive but this is not cheap - you can have a main meal for £ 11-15.00 and deserts around £5.00 - it is the drink that will top the bill. I know it does not make sense but I have a problem with no smoking -Not that I want to smoke as a former smoker - I just really miss that smoky atmosphere - I know we are all healthier my clothing smells better in the morning and it is nicer to not eat around smoke but pubs should have a bit of a haze about them - So this is my only bad words about the pub - no haze ..otherwise great ..

You can book a private room to sing your lungs out with your friends here, and it's pretty cool. The karaoke machine is one of the best I've seen in London, there are lots of choices (10,000!), the music is OK and you don't have any of the fake videos (they're absolutely hilarious though when you do have them in some places). Drinks are reasonably priced, and the staff is super nice. They have a deal for three hours plus two bottles of Prosecco for £149 and since the room can easily fit 8+ people it's not very expensive. Otherwise I think it's around £50 an hour on weekends and £30 during the week. When there was a problem with one of the mics, they offered us a free bottle of Prosecco to say sorry! So sweet. If you book a certain number of hours and they have no one after you you're free to book more on the spot if you still feel like singing, quite handy. So there you go. If you don't like karaoke, this review was totally useless for you though.

But, the chaos I walked into on a Sunday has ensured that I never walk into a crowded pub like this again. It took almost 15 minutes to flag down one of the servers to ask about getting a table, to which I was told, "If you see a spot, grab it." As soon as I saw a couple get up I threw my stuff down- hoping it wouldn't get stolen- and went to order at the bar. That took another 5 minutes. Given how crowded it was, I ended up having to share my table with 4 other people; which wasn't bad, until I ended up getting my food more than 15 minutes after I'd ordered it, and then realized I was the only one eating at a table full of strangers. The food itself wasn't bad, but for a pub that claims to have the best Sunday Roast in London, it certainly didn't compare to those that don't claim that and are less of a hassle to eat in. And at £17 a pop, you can bet the experience wasn't worth it for some chicken and Yorkshire pudding.

About a week ago, I made the mistake of ordering some Nachos here. Honestly the saddest plate of…read moreNachos I've ever come across. The best description of it I can make is that it was that someone poured a bag of tortilla chips onto a plate, squeezed some awful American-style runny cheese over it all, then put some ready-made shop-bought guacamole on one end, what looked like ketchup but was salsa on the other end, and then the largest dollop of sour cream (almost tasted like fresh whipped cream somehow) in the middle. There was no attempts to layer anything. It was served on a baking tray which I can't really explain seeing as it was all completely cold. And they cost £12.50 which, tbh, is a disgrace. They were unfortunate to say the least. I should have sent them back but I was so hungry that I tried to make the most of it. Unrelated, but the bar staff were lovely, I'm sorry I had to give a bad review based off the food.

I soothed my hangover with a pint, a plate of roast beef and a game of Trivial Pursuit and left feeling relaxed and fairly normal once again. In summer the pub's pretty beer garden is a must to visit. Sheltered from the street and overflowing with flowers it is a great place to sit in the sun and enjoy a Pimm's and lemonade.
