Having always fancied ourselves as a couple of wine buffs, my boyfriend and I decided that it would be a laugh to go along - and at £10 a head (the special introductory price, it's usually £20), how could we say no? So, up we plodded to Birdcage Walk on Ditchling Road (a journey taking all of about 30 seconds) to find a homely room upstairs laid out with tables and chairs, six wines in each place setting and the smiling faces of owners Karl and Tracey Elwood welcoming everyone like old friends. Guided by Karl's expertise, we worked our way through six wonderful wines and a series of canapés designed to bring out the best in each of them. Elwood Wines' tasting evenings are by far the most enjoyable (and decidedly grown-up) experiences I've had since arriving in Brighton and we're now firm fans, having just attended our fourth tasting and purchased two crates of wine that seriously knock the socks (and boots) off anything available in the supermarkets. Just was running a bit late, as ever!!, and drove down toward Preston Park and saw the lovely colourful plants and a really unusual window display using watering cans as though they were a fountain. Just had to pop in and talked to this crazy Spanish woman who suggested some lovely things that was absolutely perfect. That was a great start for me and things just got better. So it's a shop full to the brim with alcohol - one doth not protest. This however, is nothing new for an off-license, but where The Offie succeeds in not being just another off-license is the fact that they offer a great range of alcoholic beverages from all over the globe. This means that if you actually enjoy the taste of alcohol rather than simply using it for its ill-gotten gains, you are able to revel in the great selection. For me this meant Asahi the Japanese beer: not so rare, but nice to see nevertheless. My Canadian friend was very shocked to see Canadian ginger beer and lagers that he'd actually travelled all the way to London to get. And my other friend who introduced us to The Offie was there for the Lebanese beers. If you're an astute alcohol consumer, or you're missing a taste from home, check out The Offie. You might find something old, something new, something hopefully not borrowed, but maybe something blue!

Of course it does have more specialist beers, such as Leffe and Asahi, but these are now the types of beers you can find in your local supermarket anyway. However, to give credit to this place there was some good deals going, such as 70cl of Sambuca for £8.99 and 6 Peroni's for £6 isn't bad either. As soon as you walk in, you don't also think that there would be much else to buy other than the usual selection of fizzy drinks and sandwiches in the main fridge, but actually if you walk to the back of the store there is a really decent selection of Ales. Really decent. Better than a lot of off licenses. Harveys, Fullers, Hepworth, Batemans, Wychwood and Fenning's (who brew a beer called Sneck Lifter, wow!) are all represented in large number, so if you like real ales I would definitely have a look at this place. Bottles cost about £2 each. In the case of the ales, there was one price for two different shelves, with an arrow pointing away from all of them... But I get the feeling he keeps things simple, and charges the same for everything! If you're after a newspaper and a pint of milk, Three 2 Four scores on both counts. If you're looking for something hale and hearty however, there are much better late night stores in the area - like Buy 2 Win. A lot of the the brand products like Heinz tomato soup, Ambrosia custard and Mr Kipling cakes seem significantly over-priced whilst the biscuits, bread and tinned food tends to look more cheap and cheerful than appetising. The alcohol and freezer section also veers more towards economy purchasing with flurescent alcopops, giant bottles of cider, four packs of strong beer and frozen ready meals.
