I had the fisherman's basket and it was truly amazing! The barramundi was cooked to perfection, as well as everything else. The view of the water was just as perfect. Definitely recommend it! read more

Former Gloria Jeans Opens As Respectable Hipster Cafe…read more Serving Campos Coffee the only noteable reminant of Gloria Jeans is the display cabinet which is now filled with cakes, sandwiches and more. Gone is the chain-store branding and replaced is a chic fit-out that'll appeal to the most modern urban adventurers design sensibilities. I ordered the avocado on toast with two poached eggs ($10) and my usual flat white. There was a little kerfuffle with our order but it was the owner himself who finally brought my breakfast over with a huge side of a sincere apology. Any minor grimace I had melted in that instant. Take a seat inside, perhaps right near the grand old piano or enjoy a spot of people watching from the outside communal tables. The service is swift and the goods one of the best on Hunter Street. It's guys like Ground Floor that are turning Hunter Street Mall around and breathing much needed life into this desserted strip of Newcastle.

Had I not searched for cafe in the Newcastle area, I would not have found this place - so again, thanks !!! *insert music* to stop my thank you speech ... noted. OK, onto the review - I LOVED this little cafe. It was dark but airy, a sense of calm swept down over me and an 'ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh' escaped my lips - a sigh of belonging !! THIS is what I was looking for. Their breakfast menu although not extensive, covers your basics - eggs, muesli/porridge/yoghurt/fruit, toast etc - what else is there to eat at breakfast? Like the previous reviewer, I ordered the poached eggs and avo. I was given the option of white/brown/multi/rye/gluten free/sourdough/oneotherbreadicouldntquiteremember and I settled with the rye. The guy at the counter was SUPER rad .. when I ordered an espresso, he looks me dead in the eye and asks 'well since you've gone straight for the good stuff, would you like to try our single origin of the day as a ristretto - its from India and its nutty and caramel-ey all at the same time?'. 'Bring it' was my response. Ohh and let me tell you, it was well worth the try. Free wi-fi is always appreciated, so make sure you ask for the password if you're planning on getting some work done. I would return here in a heartbeat.

The smoothies are not overly sweet, nor is it overly tarty. It's a good balance. Customer service is quick and polite, and willing to accept dietary requirements. Overall, a very good recommendation.

Delicious. Fantastic. Superb…read more Maybe a little overpriced, but good LORD the FOOD! It's just so GOOD! The Cubano was the best Cuban sandwich I've had outside of Florida. Take it from someone who lived in Tampa & ate Cuban sandwiches at LEAST once a week -- this place does them proper justice. The jalapeños are an inauthentic but totally welcome addition. The cheese is melted just right, the sandwich is pressed beautifully, & the mustard - it's just right; not too much or too little. My partner's chimmichurri steak was to die for. The thick slab of meat that any lesser cook would have undercooked or burnt was a PERFECT medium. & the relish... Delectable. I was torn between wanting to trade because it was that good, & not wanting to let him near my blissfully delicious sandwich. Well worth the price. Next time I find myself in Newcastle I know where I'm getting lunch.

This wasn't a passing smell of burnt toast, either. It was a very strong, and permeated the entire space for our visit; it turned out that they were industrially cleaning the kitchen in the middle of the day. A sign on the wall boasted no wifi, and implored us to talk to each other instead. I don't expect or use café wifi, but I find this kind of anti-tech boasting obnoxious, and fairly impractical in an area with a large population of office workers and lawyers. A row of shelves justify the 'pantry' aspect of the name, but the handful of products are brands found in the local supermarket. The girl in charge appeared, and was very unpleasant. She handed over a menu after several uncomfortable moments. The prices were fairly high, and we chose just to get beverages. Our table was dirty, and my water cup had grit and a dead bug in them. I had a juice that was served chilled and was fine. My dining partner had the coffee, and said it was unpleasantly bitter. Overall, there's nothing here to return for, and I wouldn't recommend it. ETA Nov 16: After the owner posted aggressive and unprofessional responses to my facebook review from both his personal account and the business account (and promptly deleted them; screen caps are a beautiful thing), I am still harassed on facebook by friends and patrons of this business that feel my review is unfair or wrong. This is a popular business, but the treatment I have received on social media outweighs any possibility of me giving this business another chance.

The breakfasts menu is more imaginative than most and they make their own potato rostis rather than buy those nasty frozen hash browns that you normally get as standard cafe breakfast fare. Fitting in with the nursery theme but a very unexpected elegance of a high end restaurant. Their food presentation couldn't be faulted and the tastes of dish complimented everything about it. I came in tired, looking for something new. I came out feeling refreshed. It was a great experience and one I intend to make regular. Staff were friendly, the ambiance relaxed, airy and open. So much to see while you wait with lots of explosions of colour. Thank you for thinking outside the box and creating such a vibrant space.

The menu is tasteful and doesn't bombard you with too many options. My mum loved her chicken pot pie and was surprised to find a darker filling than the normal mornay appearance. Crispy skinned salmon is always a winner for me. I was a little disappointed that the asparagus mentioned was a small amount sliced into the lemon risotto. I was picturing full stems draped over the rice but that's just me. I love asparagus. The iced chocolate was almost a meal in itself. Beautifully presented and unashamedly topped with whipped cream. A few minor points were the small amount of car spaces, with plenty of cars parked roadside; and finding the cafe entrance. Maybe we missed it or perhaps it was located elsewhere pre COVID. As it stands we weaved our way through pots and plants until we saw it down the other end. Not that that will stop me from returning for a breakfast visit next time.

Coffee. I stumbled upon Churchkey on a recent trip to Newcastle while dragging my boyfriend on a walking tour of the Newcastle CBD area. With my wish list in tow, we were strolling up Hunter Street when I spied a poster that looked like an orange penguin classic book with 'I Love Coffee' on it. While I initially went in to ask how I could get that poster (for those playing at home I now have a copy hanging on the wall), I ended up having the opportunity to chat to cafe owner, Nick and the graphic designer who does all Churckey's graphics, Ben. Awesome lads. When I called the next day to check on the poster printing I got Nick's Mum on the phone who let me know she'd just freshly baked a loaf of Banana Bread for the cafe. Thanks, Nick's Mum. I tried it that afternoon and it was delicious. But to the point. Coffee. Churchkey is pouring Clement Coffee as well as local roasts - yes Newcastle has roasters. They're also part art gallery and host regular events including coffee cupping on a Friday night. This is the kind of space you come for a coffee and end up spending a few hours chatting away to the friendly faces within. It's unassuming location in an otherwise deserted strip of Hunter Street means it doesn't have to pretend to be anything other than what it is.
