They recently went through a heavy makeover of the restaurant and now the look really matches the food. They've kept the comforting pub bar and quiet corners but also installed a family friendly restaurant area that opens onto an impressive beer garden with a two story Wendy house! But to return to the more important aspects of having a restaurant, the food is really good. The service is fast and every time i've gone they've been incredibly friendly. I've even blundered into a quiz night by total chance which was really well run (though i might be saying that as i won a bottle of wine!). Friendly, affordable, good quality, i forgot to mention the beer but there are some fine ales and bitters as well as the standard fair on tap. Good for families but also a really nice place to just sit and take your ease for a while. a real country retreat of a pub.

Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and the service is brilliant. I love the wine list, but I'm being torn away from making my way through that to try their excellent range of spirits!! Being about one hour away from us by car, they were not our local by a long shot, but they were well worth the visit and the price tag. At the time they were pricey but they were excellent. Excellent ale selection and food quality/portions. However, in the last few years the food had been deteriorating, and the portions shrunk. On our previous visit there, for a wedding, when I asked for my fish to be cooked lightly I was told that the chef had said that they "did not have a licence for sushi" - which was immensely rude and an utterly ignorant comment. Sushi is raw fish, I asked politely for my fish to be cooked properly on not to be reduced to sand, as I had experienced it previously! - take the hint if a customer asks you for fish to be lightly cooked, there probably is a reason for it! Nevertheless, we returned. On our last visit, where all we wanted was a drink, for two of us, they were nothing short of plain rude and the worst service we have ever encountered from ANY establishment, even the lowest! Two of us went in on Sat 5 March at around 12 O'clock. The place was empty bar a party of about 10 to 15 people to the left of the bar, who were standing up, chatting and sipping what looked like orange juice. As we approached the bar, a man, before even asking us what we were there for, told us that they were understaffed and therefore they were not running a lunch service. Furthermore, they would not be serving any drinks or anything to any one but the party they had on the other side of the bar. We were stunned. I worked in the service industry for nearly nine years, and that is NOT how you treat your customers, no matter how understaffed you are. They had no warnings that they had a party in, and therefore would be closed, on any of the many boards they have outside their premises. Nevertheless, if you are understaffed, it is understandable that you may choose not to run a lunch service. It is understandable that it might take a lot longer to be served. Or that you may only be served once. But to be refused service in such an abrupt and rude manner, after having travelled purposefully to them (they are not exactly a pub on the High Street) is simply unforgivable. So, goodbye, Mill House. You have enchanting premises, but my money will go elsewhere from now on. And we will absolutely no longer recommend you to anyone, quite the opposite, in fact (and we have recommended you to hundreds of people through the years). So, you have been warned: visit the Mill House at your peril.

Inside the decor is modern and comfortable with two large dining areas and a small cosy bar area. We sat in the first dining area on the right as you go in the front door. First impression is the delicious smell of good food and the wood burning heater that was nice and warm on a chilly day. The menu is a good range of traditional pub fare (burgers, cottage pie, sausage and mash) and the more unusual (Roquefot, spinach and pear salad with raspberry dressing). We went for the fantastic value lunchtime deal of £8.95 for a starter and main from a selection of the menu, two of us had the spicy vegetable soup with two big chunks of fresh bread each to start (thick, fresh and not too spicy to scare the in-laws!) and two had potato skins which come with guacamole and salsa or bacon and sour cream (the bacon comes as freshly cooked rashers not some horrible diced up processed mixture). For our mains we had a burger and huge chunky chips (the burger unfortunately was very overcooked), cottage pie, gravy & veg (it looked lovely) and I had the cherry tomato cassoulet with haloumi which was absolutely gorgeous. I ordered the beef roast dinner (which used local produce) and the beef itself was like eating 2 steaks. It was really fresh and tasty.
