Bit of a difficult one to grade this time. Having been here a few years back for a work Christmas…read moredo, had another opportunity to return here for dinner with some colleagues. We specifically chose here due to my previous experience plus other reviews on here and elsewhere. The menu looked promising enough and it has a nice ambience, so we tried to book a table (online) for a specific time but could only get a reservation a little later. Didn't want to eat too late, but not the end of the world, so we thought the place would be busy with other diners... when we got there it was virtually empty. The staff were very friendly indeed, really cannot fault their service at all. However, the food we had can only be best described as average. It went down fine, but there was nothing really memorable about any of our meals. The food that came out was pretty much just what was stated on the menu i.e. a starter of scallops on a bed of chorizo, fried potatoes and salad was literally just that, nothing more. Similar for the mains: beef and ale pie with 'fat chips' turned out to be a pie with a basket of chips on the side that were out of a packet. I know it's being somewhat picky, but you would think a place like this would at least do their chips themselves. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding; as a STP afficionado, I have had a lot better elsewhere. Don't get us wrong, this wasn't a terrible meal by any means, we all just felt that there was something missing from this particular visit, which is why it's only 3* this time around. I will come back again, see if it was just a one-off, but I won't be hurrying back anytime soon. Food aside, I would recommend a trip the bar at the front of the place, had a nice feeling to it and a good range of drinks. Downstairs is a lovely private bar area, so it has potential for sure. Just can't quite put my finger on why it didn't really live up to expectations this time around.

It has a good range of "proper" beer, some very comfy chairs and tables and an interesting menu. My fish finger butty was a small plate. There are larger mains which sound very good. The "landlady" was very nice and chatty too :-) I'll be back. It on my way home!

They also have a good selection of pub and British food and a few dishes under 500 calories for those wanting a lighter option. I had the Spanish style chicken which was lovely albeit nothing particularly special. I would be keen to try a Sunday roast or come here again mind!

Being right across the street from the station and being a Wetherspoons (a.k.a. one of the cheapest places in town) means the Union Rooms is usually full and has an eclectic crowd. It has a very nice ambiance for a chain pub as it was a former gentleman's club (not that kind!). There are two bars (one on each floor), a sit down dining area and a large-ish family space. That said, they run out of the most random things (juice? the advertised beers?) at the most random times and is so popular it seems difficult for the staff to keep clean. It's also kind of rowdy on game day, but where in Newcastle isn't?

This place is somewhere between an old fashioned boozer and a classy bar. I couldn't quite figure…read moreit out but I liked it nonetheless. I took a leaf from my dad's book and ordered two halves at the same time. There's a great range of beers on. I also spotted a very exciting gin and tonic menu. The scotch egg in particular, and the real ale chutney, were incredible. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Newcastle.

I was recently in Newcastle for a guided beer tour (read: ale pub crawl) and our first stop after…read morearriving in the city was Bacchus. As soon as you cross the threshold into this place, you're hit with the juxtaposition of the clean, modern styling from behind the bar and on the walls against the dark, old-school wood and upholstery of the seating and the cool brass of the hand pumps. Whilst in here, I decided to sample what I presume to be a local brew - "Toon Broon". Being someone who enjoys a bottle or two of the ol' dog*, I figured this would go down well and I certainly wasn't wrong. I received a good, easy drinking brown ale which I'd quite happily have knocked back in larger quantities had we been there for longer. The stand-out aspect of my visit here, though, has to be the bar snacks. My girlfriend and I ordered a hand-raised pork pie and a black pudding scotch egg to share, but to be honest we both agreed afterwards that we'd rather have ordered two of the scotch eggs. There wasn't anything wrong with the pork pie, not by a long shot. It was a good pie, filled with quality pork which was excellently seasoned without too much jelly inside the pastry which I liked, and it came with a seemingly home-made piccalilli which was also pretty good. It just didn't stand up to the black pudding egg, though. The egg itself was wrapped in a good layer of black pudding, maybe 1-1.5cm thick all round, and coated in what looked to me to be panko breadcrumbs to add some crunch. The egg inside was cooked, but not overdone with no discolouration around the yolk. Not content with simply serving up a cracking scotch egg, it came accompanied by a dark ale chutney. Oh. My. God. That chutney. It was stunning; it was delicious in it's own right but it added an astounding sweet-savoury note to everything which was amazing. Overall, I'd quite happily return to Bacchus if I ever found myself in Newcastle again on the beers. Not just because they have a cracking range of beers and spirits, but in no small part also so I can order about 10 of those scotch eggs. (I accept no responsibility for any addictions to black pudding scotch eggs which may arise from visiting after reading this review. Consume at your own utterly delicious peril.)

However, it was a little pricey (London prices, easily), and the kitchen wasn't open for food at 8.30pm, which seems a little early to stop serving - we weren't looking for a full dinner, but even hot snacks were off the menu, and so we had to leave to eat in small groups and come back to join our friends, which wasn't great.
