Yes, one star just like so many other reviewers have posted. It started out well enough. Mom (now deceased, only a few weeks after leaving The Virginian (no connection, so please don't take it that way)) needed to do rehab after a hospital stay for a broken bone. The process started off well and we moved mom in due to its proximity to both my folks' assisted living apartment just up the road. From there it fell apart. She needed help being fed...that rarely happened unless I showed up and hunted someone down to do so, even though they KNEW this from the hospital discharge and said they could fully support that requirement. At one point I was actually asked to feed my mother because the staff was too busy!? Late medications, pretty much every day. Zero communication between shifts on the staff, so anything I told one staff member would never get passed along to any other members on the next shift. In fact, when I approached someone at the nurse's station (CNA I believe) to hunt down a nurse, doctor, or at least a floor manager, she gave me attitude and said it wasn't her job--wrong answer...our further "chat" yielded the proper amount of attention. Mom was also down in the very last room in the hallway and as a result rarely got any interaction with anyone coming to check on her. Only bonus was that she had a single room, until the last day when they came in and moved in another bed with no prior coordination with the family. Let's talk discharge process. The discharge team met with me and used alot of deflective language on their "ethical" duty if a patient wasn't making sufficient progress. I don't they know what ethical actually means. It's like that guy who fancies himself to be smart, then continues to misuse a $2 word. I called their bluff and got them to admit they were essentially going to kick her out but they admitted they couldn't do so unless there was a placement plan, so know your rights and rules!! There were two rays of sunshine that I will point out...Esther and Armstrong. Absolute kudos and respect to them. They were fantastic lights in an otherwise lousy experience. Stay far away from this place if you care about your loved ones. read more

My mother was in the SNF here for three weeks after a hospitalization. The facility and its staff were absolutely awful. The floor in her room was sticky for the first two days. The bathroom was smelly. They did not give her pain medications for the first 24 hours. Most of all, they were completely uncommunicative and unresponsive. I could not get a call back from a doctor during the entire length of her stay. Everyone I spoke to promised to call me back and no one (except the discharge planner) ever did. It was chaos. I would never ever send a loved one here. read more

Let's see - why only one star...? At 11:45 am my father still had not received his morning medications. After eight days in the rehab unit unable to walk, my father was diagnosed with COVID which means it was brought to him in his room and his only two visitors have tested negative for COVID. After eight days, there is still no appropriately sized wheelchair for him to use. After eight days, the table for his CPAP machine has not shown up in his room. After eight days, there is still nothing for him to use to elevate his legs while sitting in a chair as directed by the Virginian's own doctor. After falling at 2:00 am and calling for help, staff at the Virginian told him to call his doctor. WHAT?!?!?! There is no evidence of a plan to empty garbage cans since they always are full with more garbage on the ground around the garbage cans. There are rodents in the nesting in the apartment and the apartment now smells like portable toilet on a 110° day. Newly renovated units do not meet ADA requirements - especially the bathrooms. Should I continue? Why not! The first part of the overall construction project to be completed were exterior "improvements" like the patio that is essentially inaccessible, has no shade - not even umbrellas, and benches that are impossible for many residents to use because they do not have arms. Does this place have a clue or any awareness of who their residents are and what kinds of needs they have? By the way, the Virginian asked for this review on their website, but I probably would not have written it if they actually listed a phone number that got answered on their website. read more

If I could give no stars I would. When you walk in it looks beautiful as if you made the right choice. But when you go down to the rehab area called Cardinal it's as if you walked into Shawshank. They put my 90 year old father who was in rehab after being discharged from the hospital in a room in the corner where no nurses can see inside and no cameras to check if he falls. We asked the nurse if there were cameras and she laughed. The rooms are old and rundown. No shower in the room. As if they put him there to die. We are finding him an alternative ASAP. Don't be deceived by the first floor lobby decor. The basement is deplorable and no place for a 90 year old man who can't take care of himself due to recovering from pneumonia and an infection should have to stay. Please don't bring your loved one here. We asked to see the nurse and it took her two hours to come see us and that's on the day he was admitted. They transported him with no adult diaper and no pants. I'm disgusted. This is how we treat the elderly? Update: we wanted to discharge him today (Sunday) and were told we couldn't because nobody was available to do paperwork until Monday. We were told there is no PT on weekends. Fast forward- doctor called us today (Sunday) and said we in fact could have discharged him today and when we were visiting we saw a lady having PT. My dad doesn't eat pork so they brought him a piece of bread. Please know none of this is an exaggeration. I beg you if you love your parents DO NOT bring them here. Leaving him tonight was one of the hardest things we did today. Tomorrow morning can't come soon enough. read more

As reviewers before me have said, look past the beautiful lobby and descend into the rehab facility. There are too many patients there to be cared for properly by the staff. Rosa, the nurse on the floor, was the exception considering all of her duties. Others were not so kind. When my husband was transferred to Memory Care the room he was given was a disgrace, bare, no ambient lighting, nothing to soothe a very sick man. After paying tens of thousands of dollars, I was told that I had to supply linens, pillows and personal care items. I had to fight to get my husband a shave. One particular aide, "F", was rude to the point of cruelty. And, of course, the sales staff were very sympathetic in the beginning. (But please do not insult people with the phony "Can I give you a hug" mantra.) After I made out the check, however, I never heard from them again. read more

We had a very positive experience during a short-term rehabilitation stay at The Virginian. My husband was there for four weeks after being discharged from the hospital. Everyone on staff was very caring and focused on helping him recover and get back home. The physical and occupational therapy teams were excellent. I would certainly choose The Virginian if we ever need another stay at a rehab facility. read more

Everything! One LPN and one aide for 14 patients. That is against Medicare regulations. I am going to make a complaint to Medicare.

Stay far away from this place if you care about your loved one. My mother-in-law was here for a few years and it was mediocre on a good day. The facility is beautiful but the staff is lazy and does not communicate at all. My Mother in Law was in independent and then needed more services from assisted living. She ended up in rehab in the basement after going to the hospital. She was ignored in rehab and developed bed sores. She is still fighting for those bed sores to heal. We move her to another rehab so hopefully one day she can return to assisted living. While in rehab at the Virginian she was left in bed and ignored most days and lost the ability to walk. Thankfully the new rehab has helped her get this skill back. If you do end up choosing this facility, check your bill every month. This business tries to sneak in extra charges every time. They definitely take advantage with VERY shady business practices. If you have a choice, stay away. Again this place had a beautiful renovation but the service behind the scenes is incredibly awful. read more

To blame in on the old owners after being in the building for months says a lot-no accountability. Let me ask you a question why wouldn't you know if you manage the building??? If you are a high net worth individual, you can afford better than this. If you are not high net worth, they don't want you. It is expensive for what you get and they will nickle and dime you for extra charges. Things like phone/long distance that are typically included at other facilities are not included here. When the new owners and managers came in, my mother was evicted. This is supposed to be a continuum of care facility but they couldn't deal with her mental diminishment after our father died and put her on narcotics "for anxiety" while we scrambled to find a new competent facility. Some of the residents are lovely but too many are truly unkind to anyone who reminds them of their own frailty. Other reviews about the "mean girl" cliques are completely true. The 2019 President of the resident association must have been terribly jealous of my father and mother because she really got nasty to my mother after he died. Most of the staff is kind and service-oriented. Some of the medical staff have very thick accents which makes it difficult to communicate by phone but I never had concerns about medical competence. Unfortunately, the managers are purely financially driven. Your BFF sales manager will never make eye contact again once the contract is signed. I'd like to thank them for the harm they have done to my mother. The trauma of moving after losing our father has broken her down completely. read more

I had to give this place a star, but it would be blank if that was an option. Upstairs, perhaps higher rating is deserved and the new off-site PT may be good, BUT The "Skilled Nursing" floor is unacceptable. Some days, my loved one received no ordered procedures for the very conditions that brought him in, in essence-no skilled nursing. The hospital thought they were sending him for intensive skilled nursing care for several critical needs. Instead, medications were skipped, the sign above the bed "turn every 2 hours" was totally ignored, he was not moved out of the bed as ordered, the phone didn't work, the call bell was left inaccessible or not answered, there were ants on his window sill where dressing supplies were stored, his laptop and wallet were stolen. Staff were not receptive to pleas to implement a nursing care plan. If the dressing wasn't changed by the day shift, we were told, forget it until tomorrow. He was discharged without a 24 hour plan in place, leaving the family in dire straits since they did not know how to take care of his needs. He died 3 days later, I believe in part because he was so neglected there. I am reporting them to the Health Department to investigate the place. read more

While I acknowledge that the pandemic has stressed the healthcare industry and the excellence of some CNAs, my family member, a memory care resident, was not treated with compassion, dignity, and respect when ultimately needed. My mom is looking to move to an independent living community in the fall and I went to The Virginian with her to see the community. We met with Jenna who is lovely and saw two model apartments on the renovated floors and the plans for the future. My mom liked that there are many activities she can become involved in and that they provide transportation if needed. We are going back again next week to talk to a few of the residents. read more

New owners of the place couldn't possibly be worse than previous owners. I hear the previous owners were a not for profit organization while the current one is a for profit org. I'm not sure why a not for profit would be better. My biggest gripe is the sales staff tells families what they want to hear, they paint a great picture - the problem is it has nothing to do w/ the reality of living there. The reality is a nightmare. They had a Dr who would give my father horrible drugs without consulting or even informing my father's regular Dr. I wish Medicare would investigate this place. read more

Best thing we did was take Dad out of here and not soon enough. His hand was blue and swollen as was his foot. Moved him from BrightView Assisted Living to The Virginian due to a fall and were charged for both for two months. BV didn't take any clothes to him until we asked. Packed him up and flew him to Phoenix closer to family where it is like night and day. Incredible care, his hand and foot healed, the facility, the food and the caring compassion is 10 times better than either BV or Virginian at 1/2 the cost. read more

My mother moved into the Virginian in Fairfax, VA last week. From the initial visit to see the facility through the signing of the paper work, Jenna Ballard has been a godsend. Jenna has personally looked after every step and made my mother's transition so smooth! She had a welcome basket with my mother's favorite treats, and a "Welcome Home" sign waiting for her the day we viewed the place. She arranged for my mother to get her 1st Covid Vaccine, prior to moving in, meeting her at the door and staying with her throughout. Then the day we signed the paperwork, she and her coworkers had champagne to celebrate. She has checked on my mother regularly. I am not so sure this is her job, as she is in sales, but she continues to be so supportive, keeping me in the loop, and never fails to forward me information, answer my texts or calls, every day of the week and at all hours. She is so sweet kind and hard working! The Virginian is fortunate to have her working there, and the residents too! I have to give a special shoutout to all the employees, from the women at the front desk, to the nurses, aids, doctors, dining staff, engineers, & the rest of the sales team. They have all welcomed my mother so graciously, and made her living there enjoyable, despite the COVID restrictions still in place. Another special shout out to Cameron Cousin, the exec chef at The Virginian. what a nice guy. He personally delivered her food on the 1st day to welcome her, asking if she had any other requests. He came back with extra dessert and drinks. I am so happy she is enjoying the meals, and the food quality is on point. My mom is happy and safe living there, and I know she is in good hands when needed. I look forward to the next year and watching the transition of The Virginian as they renovate and update! It's going to be beautiful! read more

My family are so very grateful for all the loving care my mother received at The Virginian. The staff always seemed so caring towards the other residents as well. They were always willing to listen to us and were more than happy to assist my mother with anything she needed. We observed firsthand the professionalism and concern exhibited by staff for those residents requiring special care. We will be forever grateful for the care, love and attention given to my mother in her final days. The Virginian was owned by a non-profit foundation called The Temple Foundation until this June, 2019. It has now been sold to a very large for profit corporation called Focus Healthcare Partners and Life Care Services. My mom lived in the Virginian for more than a year and moved out on her own account. The Good: The Virginian is on a large campus with beautiful grounds with an on-premises rehabilitation facility and is a continuing care community, meaning that there is care available from independent living to assisted living to memory care to a full service nursing home. The people who work at the Virginian directly with the residents are, for the most part, very patient and attentive to the residents. The Bad: The Virginian underpays their employees considering what the residents are being charged. The rates for living there are high for the basic services and the resident will be charged extra for nearly everything else. Fall and break a hip so you can't go down to the dining room to get the meals you paid for? Expect to pay over $11 per meal to have it brought up two floors to your mom or dad's apartment or they can just go without for six weeks but don't expect that the amount is going to be deducted from their monthly bill despite the fact the management know exactly how many meals were eaten on the premises. Management is always trying to find ways to save money (I'm sure it will be much worse now being run by a for profit company), so don't be surprised if a dinner your mom invites you to have with her that costs her $17 for your company turns out to be hot dogs. If your parent falls and breaks a hip but doesn't qualify for Medicare's skilled nursing services, being told just to rest to recover by staying at home, no one from the Virginian staff who isn't getting paid billable hours via Medicare to be there will ever show up in their apartment. Your parent can spend six weeks being seen only for therapist visits. I had to drive to Fairfax every single day to deal with my mother because she broke her hip and no one else came. I had a nurse call and tell me after she had fallen, "You need to take your mother to the doctor." When I asked why she couldn't take the transportation from the Virginian to the doctor's office, I was told that she couldn't walk. I told them that OBVIOUSLY, she HAD to go to the ER since I don't have the ability to transport a non-mobile person in my car, as I don't own an ambulance. I was still forced to micro-manage my mother's care despite her living in facility specifically for the elderly, which is what I thought we were paying for. As the other reviewer mentioned, the residents are quite cliquish and can be actually incredibly cruel. I thought that men would have an easier time of, being at a premium in a place that is nearly all female, but apparently not. My mother faced exclusion and being told on a daily basis that she wasn't welcome to sit at a table with some of the other residents. This was expressly against the rules of the Virginian. The other residents told her they were saving a place for someone else -- again, against the rules. Then they told her it was because they didn't want to talk to her supposedly because she was going deaf -- this when virtually everyone there has some degree of hearing loss. No one wants to force their company on other people so they can be shunned and ostracized. Mom stopped taking meals in the dining room completely. She would either get dinner and bring it back to her apartment or skip eating altogether, which negatively impacted her health. Literally no one on the staff there noticed or cared. You wouldn't think octogenarians would get such joy from running a Mean Girls' club, but you would be very wrong. There is a huge amount of backbiting gossip and judgmental snark going on every day. My mother is very outgoing and extroverted and after far more than one year in the Virginian, she had not made one real friend. She begged me to let her leave there and so I did. I doubt the Virginian staff can or could do anything to address the appalling rudeness and extravagant cruelty of the smug collection of very privileged women who live there, especially given they believe their age is license to say and do whatever they want. Ironically, my now 91 year old mother's health has improved dramatically since leaving the Virginian. She's much happier and better off as well as saving thousands of dollars a month living in a condo with a concierge who has been more helpful than the desk staff at the Virginian. It was worth to her to lose the $10,000 community fee she had paid to move in to leave. 0/10, would not recommend. read more

My father recently spent 9 days in the Virginian's rehab wing, and I would recommend the facility for anyone who has a parent who needs a short-term stay for recovery from surgery. The staff is very helpful and caring and the facility, though showing its age, is clean and well-equipped to handle elderly patients who need 24/7 care. The only complaint my father had was the food, which was plentiful but not appetizing. They do offer alternative meals, such as sandwiches, but make sure to get a menu so that you can put in an order ahead of mealtimes. Bottom line is that the staff cares about the patients and that for us was the number one reason we would not hesitate to use the Virginian again if necessary. read more

Our family carefully weighed our options and The Virginian was unanimously the top pick. The Virginian's Alton Ward, our first impression at the community, is a gem and a credit to the organization. Deciding on a senior living community in the midst of a global pandemic is extremely stressful, and takes a leap of faith, too, as one might imagine. Alton listened to our unique needs, which drastically shifted, and he shared how The Virginian could meet those needs. We also learned about the big remodeling project that's about to start, as we understand it, the continuum of care, and The Virginian's management company. Prior to our mom moving in, the team set-up a nice outside meeting area for us as visitation restrictions were in place. We met the Executive Director, Andy; Administrator, Priscilla, and Head of Sales, Anna - all wonderful people who came out to welcome my mom. Andy and Priscilla routinely keep families informed of things happening inside, which is critically important, especially during these times. Although we haven't been able to visit our mom indoors, we are confident that she's in the best hands, and for that we are thankful. We'd like to sincerely thank everyone at The Virginian for doing your unique part to help ensure our mom prospers in her golden years. read more

My mother, who had been a resident at The Virginian Retirement Community, in Fairfax, for almost ten years, recently passed. I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the outstanding staff and exemplary care which was provided to my mother. My mother was in the nursing unit and became very attached to many of the nurses and CNAs, and also to her physical therapy coaches in the PEP program. The activities leader for the nursing units was wonderful. Many people were very kind to her. However, when Lifecare Services took over the management things got worse. They eliminated one of the nurse manager jobs, and began short staffing her unit. Where there had been three CNAs at all times on the unit, it slipped to two many days, because they would take a CNA from the long term nursing unit she was in and send them to the short term rehab nursing unit. They upset many of the families and residents by taking away the clothing protectors used at meals because they looked too much like bibs and were undignified. Having food on your clothing for the rest of the day is not dignified either. It took two months to replace an ice machine on the unit that could not be repaired, however at the same time they were able to purchase a brand new bus and a Tesla for transportation of the more able residents. They totally upended the food services, supposedly making them high end, but the wonderful dietician who immensely helped my mother left. In short, appearances became more important than care under LCS. We kept my mom there because of her attachment to the staff. Also, they hired a new executive director who seemed a big improvement from the first one LCS had placed at the Virginian. We figured we could keep up with things by visiting everyday. Then Covid came along and it was not possible to visit. Mom passed away in April. We could not see her the last six weeks of her life. There was good and bad at the Virginian and it still haunts me that I could not monitor her care at the end. read more

Employee just retired after 19 years of employment. Have enjoyed working for the community, meeting many residents and staff. Enjoyed creating many clubs for the residents and was supported daily by the staff. Enjoyed working with the management and leaders, saying nothing but great things about them and the community. Always backed up 100%. Community has great intentions for the residents and staff, wishing all of them the best through the upcoming positive changes. read more

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, our family could not have envisioned a scarier decision than to have to relocate our mother from living independently in her home of over 50 years to assisted living, as a result of her declining health. After much research and with the incredibly abled guidance from the The Virginian's Sales Counselor, Alton Ward we were able to coordinate the move to one of the Virginian's assisted living apartments. All of this occured during the worst times of the pandemic. While medical issues hampered a totally smooth transition, the Virginian staff (both assisted living and skilled nursing) all did their best to make the experience as positive as possible. Our mother is settling well in her apartment. Her care team, which includes medical nurses and doctors as well as occupational, physical and speech therapist actively monitors her health and continually keeps us informed. They have all made her feel as comfortable as possible in her new home. The Virginian administrative staff has done their best to make all the families and the residence feel as connected and safe as possible during the pandemic. We expect this care and attention to continue when our country opens back up and the world gets back to a semblance of normalcy. read more
