My mum recommended a record shop to me, and I honestly still can't quite decide whether she's very cool or I'm very not. Anyway, that's by the by.
The Vinyl Frontier is tucked away between the skate park and the cafe at Space, a multi-activity recreation centre just outside North Berwick. And when I say "tucked", the Vinyl Frontier really *is* basically a large cupboard - just large enough, in fact, for a counter, a sound system and crates (and crates and crates) of pre-loved vinyl of every conceivable genre.
When I arrived, there was a hand-written note in the door, encouraging me to "ask at cafe", where the proprietor (who was busy with tea and sandwiches at the time) handed over a thick bunch of keys.
Having gained access, my next challenge was figuring out where to start. Some of the crates, tubs and cardboard boxes perched on every surface are labelled, many are not. The categorisation seems to follow some sort of system, but it was far beyond the wit of this humble Yelper to figure it out. For lack of any better ideas, I got stuck into a box labelled "psych-folk, folk, prog & misc electronica", which turned out to be an accurate and comprehensive description of its contents.
Time passed - I really can't say how much. I was elbow-deep in a crate containing a heady mix of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas and 1980s cock rock when there was a knock on the door: a bacon roll and a cup of coffee from the cafe. Nice.
I could have spent a fortune, mostly on stuff that I just got curious about while stumbling around (Example hand-labelled note: "One half of a rare classic rave banger!!!!"). But in the end had to restrain myself, as I'd stupidly not gone to a cashpoint on my way over. A few hours later, I'm still wincing over some of the things I put back.
Still Miles Davis' Kind of Blue and Paul Simon's Graceland (both in great condition) were a steal for £11 total. Not shabby at all, especially when Kind of Blue usually goes for c.£20 on eBay.
This really is an amazing place, and I feel like a bit of an idiot for letting anyone else know about it. Still, my mum was good enough to share, and she raised me right. So, have at it Yelp. read more
