We ordered take-out chicken dinners based on the great reviews. It has been several years since we have eaten here and wanted to see how things with the new owners have changed. The new owners are very friendly and my husband spoke favorably of the changes inside. (He picked up the order.) Said it would be a really nice place to watch a game, etc. As to the food. The chicken was very moist and hot, but for us it was disappointing as to taste. A little bland for us. We kind of felt the same way about the potatoes. The coleslaw was fine but nothing special. Chicken places are a dime a dozen in the area and there are others that we prefer. But I could also see why this option would be preferable to some people. Online it says it's open. We go there at 4:30 on a Friday and the doors are locked. I'd suggest calling before you drive there.

We ate there at 6pm after parade and it was busy, but it only took 20 minutes to receive our food which was not bad with it being busy due to Watemelon Days. The service of all the bartenders and wait staff was above and beyond 5 stars! I was seated where I could watch kitchen and I observed the 1 and only cook handle food without gloves (FDA recommends avoiding bare hand contact with ready-to-eat foods) and boasted chicken is considered just that. There was a very bare simple menu so I ordered a cheeseburger and chips and he got the white chicken. I literally saw cook put the chicken in basket bare-handed and let my husband know that while he brought our order to window and I watch waitress bring over. My cheeseburger was well over-done as was the grilling of the bun which I ate some due to not having eaten and didn't want to wait longer, but the chicken was so overcooked that you could barely use fork to peel away a bite on the breast. When he finally got a bite, it was so dry that even dipping in ranch didn't help. The outside was very dark considered to other places we've gotten chicken from. Now, I was very impressed with the service compared to prior years at watermelon days, but the food was much better. I did see staff going back to try to help, so bonus stars for that. My husband did talk to owner who was very understanding and seems to really care about her bar and restaurant, and had 2 breasts remade but they ended up to be the same way unfortunately. Maybe for bigger crowds, have more people in kitchen the whole time so food is not overcooked for which should be discounted some to customers that do receive it that way. Next year we will eat at cafe or drive to Battle Lake before street dance. read more

Fried chicken was the best I have had in as long as I can remember! Friendly service and good prices.

Burgers are phenomenal. Broasted chicken is delicious and juicy. Portions are great and prices are better.

New owner Tina has gone all out to update interior and menu while keeping the great broasted chicken and updating the menu. Prices are very fair IMO. Best place to watch sports in the area with two new 75" tvs. All of the best local servers from the area have started working here. read more

CHICKEN! The fried pickles are new to me and were awesome. The broasted potatoes as good as ever, as was the chicken. The new owners have brought in new energy and pizazz, yet retained its old feel of being dive-y and nostalgic. Long live the Vining Palace! read more

First off, the 4 dollar signs on the entry here are wrong. This is a hip, rural fried chicken joint with VERY reasonable prices. The chicken dinner comes with broasted potatoes, a roll, sour cream, and 2 of the best pieces of fried chicken (also called broasted ) to be found anywhere.Crisp, moist, tasty and original. Vining is a tiny town. About 2 blocks long; this chicken and the Nyberg Sculpture Garden are 2 great reasons to visit. read more

NEVER AGAIN. My family arrived at your restaurant tonight and the waiter was immediately upset of the large group. Regardless, customers should be treated respectfully, and not be given the middle finger and told "fu** you," by the waiter. Obviously this place of "business" doesn't care much for customer service, and have no manners whatsoever. Another of my family members was told by the waiter that she must "do her work on her knees." SERIOUSLY? What kind of comment is that?! Incredibly rude, disgusting, and lots of swearing. We will NEVER return to this business place and NEVER recommend to anyone. Left before the food came, no point in taking that kind of harassment and verbal abuse. read more

Oh, the 'Purple Palace'.... this place is nothing short of amazing. If you like broasted chicken & quirky, old, hometown, hole in the wall restaurants, the Vining Palace is a must! Located in the town of Vining, MN off of 210. Vining is home to Nyberg sculpture park. The the town consists of: a population of 78, multiple miscellaneous sculptures that line the road, a gas station, & the Vining Palace. Why the 'Purple Palace'? Because the exterior is painted purple & the interior wallpaper (yes, I said wallpaper) is metallic purple & silver. The servers are also the owners: they are also the bartender & cook. You sit down, order off of the menu on the wall which consists of broasted chicken, potato wedges, coleslaw, ham & cheese balls, french fries, a few sandwiches, & a small children's menu. The highlight is without a doubt, the broasted chicken. It is the best chicken I, or my family, has ever had. It is crispy, & cooked to perfection EVERY time. My family visits @ least twice a year when we are up @ the cabin. The food is great, the drinks are cheap, & the price is right. If you are in the area, definitely stop by, It is great. Don't be in a hurry as the restaurant is run by a staff of 2, bring cash as credit cards are not accepted, & be ready for an experience because that's exactly what you'll get @ the Vining Palace. :) read more

I've always heard rave reviews about the Vining Palace's chicken so we decided to pick some up for our family get together the other day. We called and placed our order an hour in advance. When we got there the place was busy which was a very good thing for them, not so good for us. Twenty minutes later we got our food. Something about the first batch of chicken went awry so they had to make it again. The chicken had good flavor but the skin was pale, greasy and soggy, the broasted potatoes must have sat under the warmer while the second batch was cooking because they definitely weren't fresh. The sour cream with chives made up for that thank goodness. The Tri-colored pasta salad was delicious. I don't know if we caught them on a bad day but it took 2 Tums and a Prevacid to bring my stomach back to normal... Will we be back? Probably but not for a long time and definitely not during the weekend when they are at their busiest! read more

Let me preface this by saying that my husband and I are from the city. We live, work and play in the city. We've both lived near a major metropolitan area for the majority of our lives. We were brought to the Vining Palace in Vining, MN by some family members who own a cabin about a mile or so away. We were told prior to our visit that this place was, "amazing" and produced the "best friend chicken and coleslaw." As city folk, my husband and I went in a bit skeptical, trying to keep an open mind to this hole in the wall that is painted a lilac purple that only a Dora the Explorer loving 6 year old could appreciate. After about a 20 minute wait time, our chicken dinners arrived. They smelled delicious and looked perfect, perched in a red basket w/ waxed paper lining. Always expect about a 15-20 minute wait time, depending on how busy the restaurant is. The chicken is so fresh, it's worth the slightly longer wait. The coleslaw comes on the side - it is creamy, yet crisp. We've been back since our first visit to this darling town watering hole. It's fantastic and one of kind. These city folk now have another reason to venture into the country. read more
