This is a lovely, historic old 15th-century inn and coaching house which serves as the central pub for the local Chiltern Brewery. We last went there on our last visit in January 2025 (I'm really behind on doing reviews lately and am just trying to get in a few key older ones from the last few months) There are two parts, the Farmer's Bar, which is the main pub area and which includes outdoor seating in the lovely enclosed courtyard, and the historic, wood-paneled Great Hall. This last time, we ate in the Great Hall. Ambience is great, with lots of character and a pleasant, peaceful atmosphere. Food is outstanding. On Sunday, we always get the roast beef with veg and Yorkshire pudding, and it is always perfect, consistently one of the best we have ever had. The cask ale is outstanding, especially the 300's Old Ale and Beechwood Bitter. Service is always excellent.

The staff are always polite, smart dressed and great to have a chat too in the evening. I have yet to eat there, apart from the wonderful selection of crisps and nuts of course, but I have heard the food is excellent. My favorite feature of the pub has to be the courtyard area fully fitted with outdoor seating, tables and a sheltered walkway to the excellent toilets. Being isolated from the town centre, yet still incredibly close, it's amazing how quiet and relaxing it is to have a drink. When you're next near stop in and I promise you'll have a wonderful time.

Nice pub selections - good beer - extremely friendly staff. This used to be a house - so it is quite spacious and I'm sure you won't have a difficult time finding a place to sit. Menus clearly explain what they have to offer and then you go to the bar to order. Typical pub scheme. It's a Greene King establishment, so if you've been to others across England then you already know the drill. I have stopped going now, because the last few meals I had were mediocre - they tasted as though they had been put together from bought in processed foods rather than cooked on site, and the service wasn't up to much either. There are nicer places to go for a pub meal in Abingdon.

Despite the traditional village pub looks, the building opened in 2006 and is probably described as a gastro pub, certainly not a village pub. From what I can research it has won an award, but not for the food: it won the South East New Build category in the CLA's Rural Building Award Scheme. I find this rather misleading: if it has won any food awards please let me know and I'll update the review. We arrived on a fairly busy Saturday evening for a pre-booked table, booking looks like a good idea as it was very busy. The bar area is small, the pub is definitely aimed at diners, so we were happy that we'd booked a table so we could sit down to have our drinks. The draft beer and bottle of red wine were both nice. I asked the waitress for more details about the King Prawns in Garlic Butter (£7.95) starter, she went away to check and when she came back she described it as prawns cooked in garlic butter (duh!). Sounded fine so I ordered it and what we got was 6 large prawns, with heads still attached, in garlic butter with a little lemon and some fresh bread. Strange the heads on didn't get a mention when I asked for clarification it seemed like a key feature to me! We also had some additional bread (£2.95) some of which had been stood around cut, so the edges were dry and hard, served with an small dish with lots of oil and a tiny bit of balsamic vinegar hiding in the bottom: not impressive. For one of the mains we had an Aberdeen Angus ribeye steak with onion rings, tomato, hand cut chips and (a singular) mushroom (£18.95). Generally this was very good: onion rings were homemade, the steak was very nice. My only complaint was that the twice-cooked chips were soft and fluffy in the middle, but not crisp on the outside. The second main was Glen Falloch venison (£16.95) served with an orange and juniper jus, dauphinoise potatoes and spinach. The venison and jus were very good, the spinach was fine, but between the two some thinly sliced caramelised onions were a little too sweet. I wasn't too keen on the dauphinoise potatoes, I thought they had an odd after taste, but my fellow diner thought they were fine. We briefly dabbled with the idea of sharing some cheese for pudding, but after the waitress went away to check the selection (stilton, cheddar and goats cheeses) we decided not to bother. At this price-point the service was disappointing: the waitress didn't know details of the prawn dish, or know what cheeses were on the cheese board, and we had to ask to receive side plates and a steak knife. The Betsey Wynne is nice, but it is trying to be up-market and to do this the standard of the food and the service both need to improve. The building and car park are both good, but what goes on inside the building needs to improve.

Portions were colossal as indicated. Indeed, I likened my minted lamb burger enough for a family of four. but more impressed by the stunningly prepared dish. My hosts order of Fish & Chips was equally generous and well prepared The Heidi - a pastry filled with sweet potato, goat cheese and spinach was disappointing. The menu disclosed its a Bristol made product which is likely the reason the pastry was dry and on the stale side. Choice of peas or baked beans somewhat pedestrian. Suggest making locally, in-house or deleting to offer. Our check was presented by Our host who clearly indicated concern that we'd had an enjoyable experience. It…read morehad been closed for a couple of months and has been closed 2 or 3 times over past couple years as owners/management, whatever changed with regular monotony. What a great surprise it has been totally refurbished and has a new clean fresh look which it badly needed. A small partition wall has been built one end of the bar to convert the area previously occupied by a pool table and dart board, into a restaurant space. To differentiate it from the main bar area it has been nicely decorated with some smart tables and a different lighting scheme. The lighting won't be to everyone's taste but it is different. The main bar has a new raised floor area in one corner and completely new furniture with a nice mix of sofas, stools and regular tables and chairs. There is a good selection of wines, spirits and bottled beers although the drafts are limited. Oddly no lager brand leader on tap but otherwise good selection. Freehold prices too so better than your normal chain house. Pleasant atmosphere and very welcoming hosts so well worth a visit. Also told there is a chef about to be appointed so new menu and hopefully top rated food about to become a feature. 12th April 2011 Eventually got back for a meal to try the new food menu. Meal was very nice and although menu quite restricted this it was explained was so that what they did offer was fresh and could be guaranteed to be of good standard. That works for me! Downside is that the wait whilst your meal is being prepared from scratch, is a bit longer but if you're not in a hurry it's a pleasant atmosphere in which to have a drink and a chat with friends and when the meal does come it is nicely presented, excellently prepared and very tasty. Worked out to roughly £25 per head for 3 courses coffee and wine so not bad prices either. All round very good value for an excellent meal.

Service at the bar was friendly and prompt, and we snagged one of the few tables available to sit and people watch. Overall White Horse is a fine small pub and well worth a visit if you love historic buildings/businesses. You can be the judge of the rest.
